Chapter 93: The First Pylon, Molecular Forge Construction

  • Next Chapter

The service tunnel smelled like rust and bad decisions.

Alvian moved first, he navigated the collapsed maintenance corridor without slowing. Broken pipes jutted from the walls at angles that made the tunnel look like a throat closing up. Standing water pooled on the floor, dark and chemical, reflecting Serah’s circuitry pad in blue ripples.

Tobias brought up the rear. His new arm carried a crate of iron ingots that would have taken two men before the crawler crystal joints came into his life. He moved carefully, still learning the throttle on a limb that could crush stone if he squeezed too hard.

"The patrol passed seven minutes ago," Serah whispered, checking her pad. "Next sweep in twenty-three minutes."

Plenty of time. The Academy’s medical wing loomed ahead through a gap in the collapsed wall, and what was left of it made Alvian stop walking.

The Calamity Rift had done thorough work. The ceiling was gone in three places, open sky visible through wounds in the structure. Walls scorched black by dimensional energy. The air tasted like burnt copper and crystallized Essence residue that caught in the throat with every breath.

Bloodstains marked where instructors had fallen. The smell of old death mixed with the chemical tang of dissolved concrete.

’You did this. The Aura Explosion fractured the dimensional bedrock. The Rift tore through because of you.’

His Clearwater resonance hummed in his bones. The residue was dissolution energy. His energy. Walking through this wreckage felt like walking through a distorted mirror.

Serah pulled out her chalk. She knelt on the cracked floor of the central chamber and began marking points. Twelve locations, each one a pylon site calculated from the blueprint they had designed on Tobias’s kitchen table. The chalk lines glowed faintly where they crossed old Essence-conductive substrate still buried in the foundation.

Tobias set down the crate and started clearing debris. His new arm lifted concrete slabs that would have taken a labor crew hours to shift. He stacked them against the broken walls with controlled movements, the crawler crystal joints humming with each motion.

"Careful," Serah said without looking up from her chalk. "We need the floor intact."

"I know." Tobias adjusted his grip. "Still learning."

The first chalk mark waited. The iron ingots lay in their crate. Copper wiring coiled beside them. A Rank 3 Essence core glowed faint green in its container. Magnus Estate materials, stripped from a dead man’s legacy, about to become something that healed instead of killed.

Alvian knelt at the first pylon site.

He activated Molecular Forge.

The sensation was nothing like the Abyssal Dissolution Domain. The Domain was a sledgehammer. A nuclear option. The Forge was a scalpel. His awareness narrowed to the molecular level and suddenly he could feel everything. The iron’s crystalline structure, each atom locked in its lattice. The copper’s conductivity matrix, electrons flowing through pathways so small they existed only in potential. The Essence core’s dimensional lattice, energy stored in folded space.

He did not force the materials together. He dissolved their boundaries. The iron ingot’s outer layer softened, atoms becoming movable. The copper wire unwound at the molecular level, its structure becoming fluid. The Essence core opened like a flower, its stored energy ready to be channeled into whatever shape he chose.

A pylon. Meter-tall. Iron framework with copper channels running through it in the pattern Serah had designed. The Essence core would sit at the apex, a self-charging capacitor that would draw ambient dimensional energy and store it for the array’s operation.

He guided the reformation. Atoms moved. Bonds formed. The iron crystalline structure rebuilt itself in a new configuration, denser, more carefully aligned than any forge could produce. The copper threaded through the iron framework like veins through muscle, each pathway positioned according to Serah’s specifications. The Essence core settled into its housing at the apex, its energy beginning to flow through the new channels.

The pylon took shape. A meter-tall spire of interwoven iron and copper, its surface etched with Essence-conductive channels that caught the dim light. It hummed with stored dimensional energy, a low vibration Alvian could feel through his knees where they pressed against the floor.

[Creation Wheel: SPINNING]

[Creation action: Pylon construction, Type 1]

[Multiplier calculation: IN PROGRESS]

The reels blurred. Bronze. Silver. Gold. Each symbol streaking past in the cosmic wheel’s eternal gamble. But this was not combat. This was not destruction. This was something new. The first time the creation wheel had spun on a construction action. 𝑓𝑟ℯℴ𝓂

The reels slowed.

[Creation Roll: COMMON]

[Multiplier: 15X]

[Creation EXP: 50 base × 15 = 750]

[Creation proficiency: NOVICE → NOVICE+ (Molecular Forge)]

[EXP Bank: 5,078,000 + 750 = 5,078,750]

[Quality assessment: STANDARD]

[The pylon is functional. Reliable. Adequate.]

Modest. Fifteen times multiplier on a Common roll. Not the Rare or Epic that would produce something exceptional. But the pylon stood. It hummed. It worked.

"We have a problem," Alvian said.

Serah looked up from her pad. "Essence?"

"Twenty points per pylon. I can build maybe fourteen before I need to rest and regenerate. That gets us through the pylons and into the central focus. But the circuit integration will require another session."

Tobias set down a concrete slab. "Then we work in shifts. You build until you are low. We rest. You build more. The Academy guards change shift at dawn. We have until then."

"Three hours," Serah said, checking her pad. "Fifteen pylons in three hours. One every twelve minutes."

"I can do it faster as I learn the process." Alvian stood. The first pylon hummed beside him, a meter of iron and copper and crystal that had been scrap metal twenty minutes ago. "Mark the second site. I am ready."

Serah moved to the next chalk point. Tobias continued clearing debris. The medical wing’s ruins settled around them, broken walls and open sky and the smell of old dimensional energy. Above them, stars were visible through the holes in the ceiling. The same stars that had watched the Calamity Rift tear this place apart now watched something being built in its wreckage.

[DING!]

[Pylon 1: COMPLETE]

[Pylon 2: IN PROGRESS]

[The System notes that creation feels different from destruction.]

[The System finds this observation profound.]

[The System is choosing not to elaborate further.]

[Eleven remaining.]

The second ingot dissolved under his hands. The molecular structure yielded, atoms becoming fluid, ready to become something new. Not a weapon. Not a tool of violence. A healing device built from a dead tyrant’s scrap metal, in the ruins of an Academy he had saved, by a boy the world had called trash.

The creation wheel hummed. Ready for the next spin. Ready for the next act of making.

’One down. Eleven to go.’

——-

The second pylon went faster.

Muscle memory from the first construction streamlined the molecular manipulation. The iron yielded more quickly. The copper threaded through the framework with practiced precision. The Essence core settled into its housing with a satisfying click that resonated through the floor.

[DING!]

[Pylon 2: COMPLETE]

[Creation Roll: COMMON]

[Multiplier: 15X]

[Creation EXP: 750]

[Quality: STANDARD]

[The System notes that practice improves performance.]

[The System finds this revelation shocking.]

Tobias whistled low. "Twelve minutes. Three minutes faster than the first."

"The process is the same. My hands know the path now." Alvian flexed his fingers. The Molecular Forge left a faint iridescence on his palms, molecular debris from the reformation process. His Clearwater resonance absorbed it within seconds. "Third site. Mark it."

Serah moved to the next chalk point. Her pad hummed with data from the first two pylons, recording every molecular configuration, every Essence flow pattern. She had been silent through the second construction, watching with the intensity of a scientist seeing something unprecedented.

The third pylon started like the others. Iron dissolved. Copper became fluid. The Essence core opened. Alvian began guiding the reformation, he processed the molecular blueprint with superhuman speed.

But something went wrong.

The copper-crystal interface destabilized mid-forging. The molecular bonds between the copper channels and the Essence core’s crystalline housing began vibrating at wrong frequencies. Alvian felt it through his hands. The resonance was off. Energy flowing through the channels was interfering with itself, creating patterns that canceled rather than amplified.

He tried to correct. The Molecular Forge allowed real-time adjustment, but the misalignment was structural. The copper’s grain structure was perpendicular to the crystal lattice, and the energy flowing through both materials was colliding instead of flowing.

The pylon cracked.

A thin fracture line ran from base to apex, splitting the iron framework like a fault line in stone. The Essence core flickered, its energy discharge becoming erratic. The pylon hummed with a discordant tone that made Serah wince.
