Chapter 92: Thirty Forging Operations
"That was a prosthetic. This is living tissue. This is dissolving someone’s damaged organs and rebuilding them molecule by molecule while they are still alive." She paused. "Alvian, this is not healing. This is something else entirely."
"Does it matter what we call it if it works?"
Tobias listened from the doorway, his new arm crossed over his chest. His contribution came from a different direction. Practical. Grounded. The old scavenger who had spent decades in the Warrens knew things that scientists did not.
"The medical wing’s sub-basement has intact drainage," he said. "The original architects built for flooding. Dimensional pressure fluctuations, Rift water intrusion, infrastructure failures. They installed drainage channels that connect to the Undercity maintenance tunnels." He pulled a hand-drawn map from his jacket, the paper yellowed and folded so many times the creases had become permanent. "If your array produces dissolution runoff, and it will, you need somewhere for it to go. The dissolved tissue has to go somewhere. It does not just vanish."
Alvian took the map. He overlaid it on the Academy schematics, finding the connection points between the sub-basement drainage and the Undercity tunnel network. Tobias was right. The runoff from the healing process would need to be channeled away from the treatment area. The drainage system could handle it if properly configured.
"The drainage channels will need to be cleared and widened," Alvian said. "The Molecular Forge can handle that during construction."
"Thirty forging operations," Serah said, reading his emerging blueprint. She had mapped his design process, counting the discrete components. "Twelve pylons. One central focus. Twelve conductive channel segments linking pylons to focus. Four drainage integration points. One structural reinforcement pass. That is thirty separate Molecular Forge applications."
"Correct."
"At your current Essence capacity, each forging operation will cost between ten and thirty Essence. Thirty operations at twenty Essence average is six hundred Essence. Your maximum is two hundred eighty seven." She looked at him. "You cannot power this alone."
"I know." He checked his interface. EXP Bank: 5,578,000. Enough for significant allocation. "I allocate five hundred thousand EXP to Intelligence."
[DING!]
[EXP Allocation: 500,000]
[INT: 209 → 214 (+5 at 100,000 EXP per point)]
[EXP Bank: 5,578,000 - 500,000 = 5,078,000]
The increase sharpened his mental processing. Details that had been slightly blurred became crisp. The blueprint in his mind refined itself, optimizing molecular configurations, calculating Essence flow patterns, identifying potential failure points before they could occur.
"The array will need to be built in phases," he said. "Phase one: structural preparation. Clear the rubble. Reinforce the floor. Establish drainage connections. Phase two: pylon construction. Twelve individual forging operations, each producing a self-charging Essence capacitor. Phase three: central focus. The most complex component. Requires integration of all three Talent aspects. Phase four: circuit integration. Etch the conductive channels. Connect everything."
He sketched the final blueprint on the pad. A circular array, fifteen meters in diameter, with twelve pylons arranged in a ring around a central crystal sphere. The design looked, from above, like a simplified atom. Nucleus and electron orbits. The fundamental structure of matter, rendered in iron and crystal and copper.
Serah photographed the blueprint with her pad. "I will need to design the molecular orientations for each component. The crystal lattice alignments, the copper grain structures, the Essence flow patterns. You can forge the materials, but the molecular engineering requires circuitry expertise."
"That is why you are here."
She met his eyes. Something passed between them that was not quite friendship and not quite partnership and not quite something else neither of them was ready to name. Professional respect with an undertow of something warmer.
Tobias cleared his throat. "If you two are done having a moment, we have a construction timeline to plan. The Academy is guarded. Royal patrols. We will need to enter through the service tunnels."
"The same tunnels we used for the estate raid?" Serah asked.
"Different tunnels. The Academy’s maintenance infrastructure connects to the Undercity through three separate corridors. Two are sealed. One is damaged but passable." Tobias tapped his map. "We go in at 2 AM. Three hours of work before the patrol shift changes. If we cannot finish in three hours, we pull out and come back the next night."
"Thirty forging operations in three hours," Serah said. "That is one operation every six minutes."
"Can you do it?" Tobias asked Alvian.
Six minutes per operation was tight. Each forging required molecular analysis, dissolution of raw materials, and guided reformation. The first pylons would take longer as he established the process. The later ones would be faster as muscle memory built.
But he was not going to do it alone. Serah would specify molecular orientations. Tobias would handle material prep and site work. The team would function as a unit.
"I can do it," Alvian said.
[DING!]
[Blueprint: FINALIZED]
[Healing Array specifications: 12 pylons, 1 central focus, 15m diameter]
[Construction operations required: 30]
[Estimated Essence cost: 600 (over multiple sessions)]
[Team coordination: REQUIRED]
[The System notes that this is the first time the Host has designed a construction project of this scale.]
Alvian closed the interface. The blueprint glowed on Serah’s pad. Tobias’s map showed the route in. The materials sat in their spatial rings, waiting to become something greater than scrap.
"Tomorrow night," Alvian said. "We go in at 2 AM. We build the array. We change everything."
Serah nodded. Tobias flexed his new arm, the crawler crystal joints humming with stored energy. The kitchen light flickered. The Undercity hummed. And somewhere above them the King searched for an enemy who was no longer running.
’Thirty forging operations. Twelve pylons. One central focus. One chance to make the world understand that dissolution is not just destruction.’
’It is the first step of creation.’
The kitchen fell quiet. Three people around a warped table, planning to build something impossible in the ruins of something broken.
The creation wheel hummed in his interface, patient and ready.
