Chapter 90: The Abandoned Estate

Tobias nodded slowly. His new arm flexed unconsciously, the fingers opening and closing as he processed. "Hendricks will help with phase one. He has contacts in every level. The pharmacists, the dealers, the grey-market medics. They all owe him favors."

"I need to see him," Alvian said. "Can you get a message through?"

"The communication crystal." Tobias held it up. "Hendricks has receivers. Old ones. Pre-Cataclysm tech that runs on similar frequencies. If I calibrate this right, I can reach him directly."

"Do it." Alvian turned to Serah. "I need you to document everything. Every creation. Every specification. Every molecular configuration. If this goes public, I need proof that the creations are genuine and reproducible."

Serah’s pad was already recording. "I have been documenting since you started talking. But Alvian, there is a problem. The communication crystal and the surgical blade, they are impressive. But they are small. A purification vial and a scalpel will not change a kingdom’s mind. You need something bigger. Something undeniable."

Alvian knew she was right. Small demonstrations were good for building grassroots support. But to shift the King’s calculus, he needed something that could not be ignored. Something that made the political cost of killing him mathematically insupportable.

He ran scenarios. What could he build that would be undeniable? What creation would make the King hesitate?

The answer came from an unexpected direction. His communicator, still showing the extranet feeds, displayed a news alert. The Academy’s medical wing had been destroyed during the Calamity Rift. The healing infrastructure for the entire capital region was crippled. Hundreds of injured students and instructors were being treated in makeshift facilities with inadequate supplies. The death toll from delayed treatment was rising.

The King’s own proclamation had created the crisis. By declaring Alvian an enemy, he had forced the Academy to distance itself from its most powerful potential ally. The Academy needed healing capabilities. Alvian could provide them.

"I need to build a healing array," Alvian said. "A large-scale Essence-conductive medical device. Something that can treat dozens of patients simultaneously. Something that uses Molecular Forge principles to repair tissue damage at the molecular level. If I can install one in the Academy’s medical wing..."

Serah’s eyes widened. "That would change everything. The Academy instructors, the students, the families. They would all owe you. The political pressure to pardon you would be overwhelming."

"The King cannot execute the man who saved his Academy’s students. Not without facing revolt." 𝒻𝑟ℯℯ

Tobias grunted. "You are going to need more than bug cores and scrap metal for something like that."

Alvian looked around the cache. Stone walls. Old crates. Copper wire. Not enough. Not for something of that scale. He would need dimensional crystal, refined Essence conductors, medical-grade materials that did not exist in the Undercity.

But he knew where to find them. The Magnus Estate. Abandoned since the Duke’s death. Untouched by the King’s decree because the political chaos had prevented its seizure. Full of magitech components, weapons, armor, and raw materials that a Level 45 A-Rank noble had accumulated over decades.

"The Magnus Estate," Alvian said. "I looted the treasury but the armory and the workshops are still intact. Magitech components. Refined metals. Essence-conductive crystals. Everything I need."

Tobias and Serah exchanged a look.

"The Estate is in the Upper Ward," Serah said. "Where the King’s guards are thickest. You would be walking into a trap."

"Not if I do not walk." Alvian held up his hand. Void Step: Annihilation hummed in his Essence reserves. "I teleport in. I Forge what I need. I teleport out. In and out in under five minutes."

"Your Essence is not infinite," Serah said. "Two Void Steps cost one hundred Essence. Plus the Molecular Forge cost for a healing array. You would be running on fumes."

"Then I allocate EXP to Essence before I go." He checked his interface. EXP Bank: 10,578,000. Enough. He allocated 5,000,000 EXP to Essence.

[DING!]

[EXP Allocation: 5,000,000]

[Essence: 262 → 287 (+25 at 200,000 EXP per point)]

[EXP Bank: 10,578,000 - 5,000,000 = 5,578,000]

Essence 287. Enough for two Void Steps and a substantial Molecular Forge operation. Not comfortable. But possible.

"Rest first," Tobias said. The order in his voice was that of a man who had spent decades in dangerous places and knew what exhaustion looked like. "Four hours. Then you go."

Alvian wanted to argue. His INT 209 calculated the time cost, the risk of delay, the probability of Royal Guard patrol patterns shifting. But his body was heavy. The Version 3.0 update, the Molecular Forge operations, the EXP allocations. Everything was catching up.

"Four hours," he agreed.

He sat on the stone floor. Serah sat beside him. Not touching. Close enough that her SunFire warmth pressed against his Clearwater chill. Tobias took the communication crystal and began the delicate work of calibrating it to Hendricks’s receiver frequency, his new arm moving with precision that made him smile every time he noticed it.

The cache fell quiet. The Undercity hummed around them. Above, the King searched. The Guilds fractured. The public protested. And the World Will watched, curious, cautious, waiting to see what the Emergent Variable would do next.

Alvian closed his eyes. Four hours. Then the Magnus Estate. Then the healing array. Then the demonstration that would make him too valuable to kill.

The creation wheel hummed in his interface. Ready for the next spin. Ready for the next act of making.

’Dissolution was the first half. Creation is the second. And I am going to build my way out of this.’

Sleep took him. Serah’s warmth anchored him. Tobias’s new arm clicked softly as he worked.

Four hours.

Then the real work began.

—

The Void Step tore a hole in reality and spat him out in the ruins of someone else’s ambition.

Alvian materialized in the Magnus Estate courtyard at 3:07 AM. The departure vacuum detonated behind him, dissolving a three-meter circle of empty air where his guest quarters had been. Two Royal Knights screaming somewhere in the distance. Let them scream. He was already gone.

The courtyard was a graveyard of old decisions.

Bloodstains marked the flagstones in patterns he recognized. Here was where the first guard had fallen, his concussive rifle dissolving mid-firing. There was where the Duke’s magma had splattered and cooled into obsidian glass, the molten rock frozen mid-splash like a sculpture of someone’s terrible last idea. And there, that smooth crater in the east wall, was where his Clearwater Palm had dissolved a man’s chest plate and the heart beneath it.

’Nothing grows here anymore. Not even guilt.’

The main building stood intact. Three stories of stone and magitech reinforcement, windows dark, doors hanging open like mouths too tired to speak. The servants had fled. The guards had deserted. The Crown had not yet seized the property because the political chaos was still spinning its wheels in committee hearings and jurisdictional disputes. Nobody owned this place. Which meant everybody could.

He mapped the estate in seconds. Every corridor. Every locked door. Every structural weakness and load-bearing wall. The building was a treasure chest waiting for someone with the right key.

He had the key. The key was acid.

[DING!]

[Location: Magnus Estate, Upper Ward]

[Status: ABANDONED]

[Crown seizure: PENDING (estimated 6 to 8 hours)]

[Recommendation: Extract resources before dawn. The System suggests moving quickly.]

’Noted.’

The east wing forge was his first target. The door was locked with a magitech seal rated for B-Rank Talent output. Overkill for a workshop. Standard for a paranoid noble who thought everyone wanted to steal his secrets. Alvian pressed his palm against the lock mechanism. Clearwater Palm. The seal hissed, bubbled, and ceased to exist in four seconds. The door swung open on rusted hinges.

The forge was a professional workshop. Duke Magnus had funded his family’s magitech production for decades, and the equipment showed it. Raw iron ingots stacked in orderly rows along the north wall, each one stamped with the Magnus family crest. Copper wiring coiled on industrial spools rated for Essence conductivity, the kind of material that Undercity scavengers would kill for. Dimensional-conductive crystal stockpiled in sealed containers, each one worth more than most thirteenth-level residents earned in a year.

He tallied the inventory automatically. Three hundred forty kilograms of iron. One hundred twenty kilograms of copper. Forty-five kilograms of dimensional crystal. Enough material to build his healing array three times over.

’Tobias is going to lose his mind when he sees this.’

He moved to the treasury. The outer door had been dissolved during his original raid, leaving a person-shaped hole in the steel slab that looked like a silhouette cut from paper. The inner wards were still active, pulsing with layered defensive energy that nobody had bothered to deactivate. Physical reinforcement. Essence-scanning barriers. Dimensional locks that anchored spatial coordinates to prevent teleportation.

Three layers of security designed to stop exactly what he was about to do.
