Chapter 88: Tobias’s New Arm
The arm’s shoulder joint was designed to interface with the Essence pathways he had healed earlier. The widened channels, the cleared obstructions. They were not just healed. They were prepared. The Molecular Forge had designed the arm to integrate with Tobias’s specific Essence signature, using the pathway map Serah had created during the surgical healing.
"Hold still." Alvian pressed the arm against Tobias’s shoulder stump. He channeled a trickle of Clearwater energy into the junction point, dissolving the outer layer of the prosthetic and Tobias’s scar tissue simultaneously, then reforming them as a single integrated structure. The bond was not mechanical. It was biological. The arm became part of Tobias.
Tobias gasped. His new hand twitched. The fingers closed. Opened. The crawler crystal joints hummed as Essence flowed through them for the first time. He raised the arm. Rotated the shoulder. Flexed the elbow. Each movement was smooth, responsive, organic.
He grabbed a stone from the floor. His new fingers crushed it to powder.
"Boy," Tobias whispered. "What did you make me?"
"An arm," Alvian said. "Just an arm."
[DING!]
[Creation Tier milestone: First creation completed.]
[Host has successfully created a functional prosthetic limb using Molecular Forge.]
[Creation EXP awarded: 45,000]
[Creation proficiency: NOVICE → APPRENTICE (Molecular Forge)]
[The System would like to remind the Host that this was a Rare roll.]
[Higher multipliers are possible.]
[The System is excited to see what the Host makes next.]
Tobias sat on the stone floor, opening and closing his new hand, tears running silently down his weathered face. He did not try to hide them. Fifteen years with a crude mechanical arm. Fifteen years of limited movement, constant maintenance, and the quiet shame of being half a man in a world that measured worth by capability. And now a boy with acid hands had built him something better than anything the Guild artificers could produce, in twenty minutes, from garbage and bug cores.
Serah was already recording everything. Her pad hummed with data. "The integration is seamless. The arm is reading as biological tissue on my scanners. Not mechanical. Not prosthetic. Biological. How is that possible?"
"The carbon integument formed a synthetic dermal layer that mimics organic tissue at the molecular level," Alvian said. "The arm is not alive, but it behaves like it is. It will heal. It will adapt. It will respond to Tobias’s Essence as if it grew there."
Serah looked at him with that expression again. The one that was not quite fear and not quite awe and not quite something else she was not ready to name. "You just invented a new field of medicine."
"I just built an arm."
"You just built an arm that is better than any prosthetic in existence. From scrap. In a cave. While running from the King." She shook her head. "Do you understand what you have done?"
He understood. He just did not want to say it out loud. Molecular Forge was not just a combat tool. It was not just a crafting Skill. It was a paradigm shift. If he could build a prosthetic arm from scrap materials in twenty minutes, he could build anything. Weapons. Armor. Medicine. Infrastructure. The applications were limited only by materials, Essence, and imagination.
The creation wheel had given him 45,000 EXP for a Rare roll. A God Roll on a more complex creation could yield millions. The System was not just a combat engine anymore. It was a factory. A laboratory. A forge that could reshape the world one molecule at a time.
Tobias stood. He tested the arm further. He picked up a crate. Set it down. He grabbed the stone wall and squeezed. The stone cracked under his grip. The arm was strong. Far stronger than his old mechanical one. The crawler crystal joints amplified his Essence output, turning a normal human’s grip into something that could crush rock.
"I do not know what to say," Tobias said.
"Say you will help me figure out what to do next," Alvian said.
Tobias looked at him. The tears had dried. What remained was something harder. Something that looked like purpose.
"The King has a bounty on you. Five hundred thousand credits. Every bounty hunter in the capital is combing the Undercity. The Guilds are fracturing. The public is protesting. And you are sitting in a cave building arms from garbage." Tobias flexed his new hand. "What exactly is the plan, boy?"
Alvian looked at the creation wheel, still glowing in his interface. Then he looked at Serah, still recording data. Then at Tobias, with his impossible new arm. Three people in a forgotten room at the bottom of the world.
"The plan," Alvian said slowly, "is to stop running."
---
"Stop running," Serah repeated. "That is your plan. The King has five hundred thousand credits on your head, the Royal Guard is searching every district, and your plan is to stop running."
"Running is what they expect," Alvian said. "Every fugitive runs. They hide. They get found. They die or surrender. I am not going to do either."
Tobias leaned against the stone wall, his new arm resting at his side. The crawler crystal joints pulsed faintly as he processed the conversation. "You cannot fight the entire Royal Guard. You are Level 70. Strong, yes. But the King has resources. Magitech artillery. Dimensional weapons. Things that do not care how high your VIT is."
"I am not going to fight them either." Alvian held up his hand. The Molecular Forge hummed beneath his skin, ready. "I am going to give them something they want more than my head."
Serah’s circuitry pad beeped. She had been running calculations since he spoke. "The political crisis. The public protests. The Guild fractures. The King’s authority is eroding because he declared a hero an enemy of the state. If you could reverse that narrative, give the King a reason to pardon you publicly..."
"Not pardon," Alvian said. "Leverage. The King wanted me as a weapon. A regulated asset. What if I offer him something better than a weapon? What if I offer him something nobody else can produce?"
