Chapter 87: The First Forge
He could create.
Serah stirred. Her eyes opened, cloudy with sleep, then sharpened as she saw his expression. She sat up, their hands still linked, and looked at his face.
"It worked," she said.
"It worked."
She looked at their joined hands. Neither of them moved to separate.
"What can you do now?" she asked.
He looked at the room. The old crates. The grey chair. The stone walls. Everything was matter. Everything was bonds. Everything could be broken down and rebuilt.
"Anything," he said. "I think I can do anything."
The creation wheel hummed in his interface, waiting for its first spin. Outside the cache, the Undercity continued its endless mechanical breath. Somewhere above, the King’s guards searched. Somewhere further, the World Will watched.
But down here, in a forgotten room at the bottom of the world, a boy who had learned to break everything sat holding the hand of someone who had taught him that breaking was not the end of the story.
It was the beginning.
[DING!]
[Creation Wheel: READY.]
[Awaiting first creation action.]
Alvian looked at Serah. She looked at him.
"What do you want to build?" she asked.
He did not know yet. But for the first time, the question did not feel like a burden. It felt like an invitation.
—
The cache room smelled like dust and old wood and something new. Something electric. The Molecular Forge hummed inside Alvian’s chest like a second heartbeat, waiting for him to use it. The creation wheel glowed faint in his interface, patient, ready to spin for the first time.
Serah had fallen back asleep on her crate. Tobias was awake, sitting near the collapsed entrance, testing his healed shoulder with cautious movements. His missing arm hung at his side, the stump clean and functional now but empty. The mechanical arm that had served him for fifteen years was gone. Dissolved or confiscated during the Magnus raid. Either way, it was not coming back.
Alvian looked at the stump. Then he looked at the old crates lining the walls. Then he looked at his own hands.
’The System said start with something that matters. Something that is not a weapon.’
"Tobias," he said.
The old scavenger turned. His eyes were sharper now. The healing had done more than fix his shoulder. It had restored something in him that pain had been slowly eating away.
"How do you feel about getting a new arm?"
Tobias stared. His mouth opened. Closed. Opened again. "You cannot be serious."
"I am serious. Molecular Forge lets me break materials down to component molecules and reassemble them. I can take the metal from these crates, the stone from the walls, whatever else I can find, and build you something functional. Maybe better than functional."
Tobias looked at his stump. Then at Alvian. Then at the crates. His mechanical arm had been crude but reliable. Magitech actuators, Essence-conductive wiring, salvaged parts from a dozen different machines. It had been built by a Guild artificer over three months at enormous cost.
"You are telling me you can build a replacement in what, an hour?"
"I do not know how long it will take. I have never used this Skill before. But the raw materials are here. The System says I can reassemble them into new configurations. A prosthetic arm is just a configuration of metal and Essence-conductive channels."
Serah stirred on her crate. Her eyes opened, sharp despite the brief sleep. "Did I hear prosthetic?"
"Tobias needs an arm. I am going to build him one."
She sat up fully. Her circuitry pad was in her hands before her feet hit the floor. "Show me."
---
They spent twenty minutes gathering materials. Alvian broke down three old crates with his bare hands, the wood splintering easily. The metal corner brackets went into a pile. Serah scavenged wiring from the collapsed entrance, old copper conductors still intact despite decades of neglect. Tobias contributed something unexpected. He reached into his coat and pulled out a small pouch.
"Sludge Crawler cores," he said. "I had them in my pocket when the Magnus guards grabbed me. They did not think to check." He dumped six Rank 2 cores onto the stone floor. They glowed faintly green, pulsing with residual dimensional energy. "Essence-conductive material. Better than copper for channeling Talent energy through artificial limbs."
Serah’s eyes widened. She grabbed one and held it up to her pad. The scanner went crazy. "These are pure. Unrefined but pure. The Essence conductivity is off the charts. If you integrate these into the arm’s joint mechanisms, the prosthetic will have organic-level responsiveness."
Alvian knelt beside the materials. Wood. Metal. Copper wire. Six crawler cores. Stone dust from the walls. He processed each component, cataloguing molecular structures, calculating reformation pathways. The Molecular Forge interface appeared in his vision, overlaying blueprints on the pile of materials.
[DING!]
[Molecular Forge: READY]
[Materials detected: Iron (2.3 kg), Copper (0.8 kg), Carbon-based organic matter (4.1 kg), Essence-conductive crystal (6 units, Rank 2)]
[Suggested configuration: Prosthetic limb, humanoid, right arm]
[Complexity rating: MODERATE]
[Estimated Essence cost: 200]
[Current Essence: 412/430]
[Proceed with creation?]
"Proceed," Alvian said.
He placed both hands on the pile. The Molecular Forge activated.
The sensation was nothing like Abyssal Dissolution Domain. The Domain was a blunt instrument, a nuclear option that dissolved everything in its radius. The Forge was surgical. Precise. He could feel every molecule in the pile, every bond holding every atom in place. The iron atoms in the brackets. The copper atoms in the wire. The carbon lattices in the wood. The complex crystalline structures of the crawler cores.
He started breaking bonds. Not randomly. Selectively. The iron brackets dissolved into a cloud of iron atoms, held suspended in his Essence field. The copper wire followed. The wood broke down into carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and trace minerals. The crawler cores were harder. Their crystalline structure was designed to hold dimensional energy, and breaking those bonds required focused effort. But his Clearwater resonance, now enhanced with Reformation capability, found the weak points and exploited them.
The materials became a molecular soup. Atoms floating in a controlled field. Ready to be rebuilt.
A prosthetic arm. Not a crude mechanical replacement. Something better. Something that used the crawler cores as Essence-conductive joints, the iron as structural framework, the copper as nerve-analog channels, and the carbon from the wood as a synthetic skin layer. The design was not his own entirely. The Molecular Forge contributed, filling gaps in his knowledge with System-generated schematics. The arm would be stronger than Tobias’s old mechanical one. More responsive. More integrated with his Essence pathways.
He began reassembly. Atoms moved. Bonds formed. The iron atoms linked into a skeletal framework, denser and more carefully structured than any forge could produce. The copper wove through the framework like veins, creating a nervous system that would channel Essence from Tobias’s body into the arm’s actuators. The crawler cores settled into the elbow, wrist, and finger joints, their crystalline structures aligned to amplify and direct Essence flow.
The carbon-based materials formed the outer layer. Not wood. Not plastic. Something between skin and steel. A synthetic integument that would flex like flesh but protect like armor.
The creation wheel spun.
[DING!]
[Creation Wheel: SPINNING]
[Creation action: Prosthetic arm construction]
[Multiplier calculation: IN PROGRESS]
The reels blurred. Bronze. Silver. Gold. The familiar cosmic wheel mechanics applied to creation for the first time. Alvian felt the probability engine working, measuring his effort, his intent, the complexity of the creation, the value of the act.
The reels slowed.
[DING!]
[Creation Roll: RARE]
[Multiplier: 450X]
[Creation EXP: 450 × 100 base = 45,000 EXP]
[EXP Bank: 10,400,000 + 45,000 = 10,445,000]
[Creation quality: ENHANCED]
[The prosthetic arm has been upgraded by the Rare multiplier.]
[Enhancements: Self-repairing carbon integument. Adaptive Essence conductivity. Latent dissolution resistance (inherited from Host’s Clearwater resonance during creation).]
The arm materialized in his hands. It was beautiful in a brutal way. Dark iron framework visible beneath grey carbon skin. Green-tinged crawler crystal joints that pulsed with captured Essence. Fingers that flexed with organic fluidity. The arm was warm. Not mechanical-cold. Warm, like it was already alive.
Serah’s pad beeped wildly. Her scanner could barely process the readings. "The Essence conductivity in those joints is three times higher than Guild-grade prosthetics. And the outer layer, it is not just protective. It is regenerative. The carbon integument will repair itself from minor damage using ambient Essence. That is not possible. That is not something that exists."
"It exists now," Alvian said.
He held the arm out to Tobias. The old scavenger stared at it with an expression Alvian had never seen on his face before. Not calculation. Not wariness. Something raw and unguarded that looked dangerously close to hope.
"This is impossible," Tobias said.
"You said that about a lot of things lately. Take the arm, Tobias."
Tobias reached out with his remaining hand. Then stopped. "How do I attach it?"
Alvian had already planned for this.
