Chapter 86: Creation Tier Unlocks, The First Act of Making
They descended. Serah’s SunFire provided light, a warm golden glow that pushed back the darkness. Alvian’s Clearwater resonance hummed in his bones, reading the molecular structure of the stone around them. Old. Dense. Stable. This deep, the dimensional bedrock was solid. No Rifts could open here. No dimensional energy could penetrate.
Which made it the perfect place to hide from both the King and the World Will.
The cache was behind a collapsed wall. Tobias had been right about the entrance caving in, but he had been wrong about nobody getting through. The collapse was rock and debris, not solid stone. With Tobias guiding and Alvian’s STR 530 clearing boulders like they were cardboard boxes, they broke through in twenty minutes.
The cache was a single room. Roughly ten meters by ten meters. Pre-Cataclysm storage, probably used by delvers who had worked these tunnels before the Cataclysm destroyed their operations. Wooden crates lined the walls, their contents long since rotted or stolen. A single chair sat in the center, miraculously intact, its wood grey with age.
Alvian sat in the chair. The wood creaked but held. His weight was not what it had been two months ago.
"Twelve hours," he said. "I will be unconscious for most of it. The System warned me to find safety before the update completes."
Serah set up her circuitry pad on a crate. The screen cast blue light across the room. "I will monitor your Essence fluctuations. If something goes wrong, I will know before you do."
"You cannot help if something goes wrong," Alvian said. "Version updates are internal. System-level. If they fail, they fail."
"Then I will watch you fail and document it for science." Her tone was flat. Her expression was not. She was scared. She was staying anyway.
Tobias lowered himself onto a crate near the entrance. His shoulder moved smoothly. The pain was gone. He kept testing the range of motion, rotating the joint, flexing muscles that had been screaming for days.
"You did something to me back there," Tobias said. "Something I do not understand. My Essence pathways are not just healed. They are better than before. Wider. Clearer. Like someone took a river and straightened every bend."
Alvian considered how to explain. "I dissolved the damaged pathways. But the dissolution was precise enough that only the damaged portions were removed. The healthy tissue filled the gaps. And because the damaged pathways were narrower than the original channels, removing them actually widened the overall pathway."
Tobias stared. "You are telling me that your acid made my Essence flow better."
"Creation through selective destruction," Serah said quietly. She had been listening. "He removed what was broken so the body could rebuild. The rebuild is naturally more efficient because the obstruction is gone."
Tobias shook his head slowly. "The world has changed since I was young. Back then, healing meant bandages and prayer. Now it means a boy with acid hands dissolving your injuries molecule by molecule."
"Rest," Alvian said. "All of you. I do not know what Version 3.0 will do, but I need you alert when I wake up. If something goes wrong, run. Do not fight. Run."
Serah opened her mouth to argue.
"Run," he repeated. "You cannot fight what I might become. If the update fails and the System destabilizes my Talent pathways, the dissolution energy in my body could cascade. Uncontrolled. That would be worse than the Calamity Rift. That would be a walking dissolution event that consumes everything it touches."
The silence that followed was heavy.
"I will run," Serah said finally. "But only if I have to. And I will decide when I have to. Not you."
Alvian wanted to argue. He calculated seventeen tactical reasons why her staying was a bad idea. But the System pulsed gently in his interface.
[DING!]
[Host is attempting to push away an ally again.]
[The System notes this is a recurring pattern.]
[The System suggests the Host reflect on why he keeps doing this.]
[Trust was the first half of the creation condition.]
[Connection is the second half.]
[You cannot create alone.]
He looked at Serah. Her jaw was set. Her circuitry pad was in her hands, ready to record data. Her SunFire warmth pressed against his Clearwater chill in the small room, creating that same charged tension that had been building between them for weeks.
"Okay," he said. "You stay."
She nodded once. Then she turned back to her pad, and the conversation was over.
The update began at 11:47 PM. Alvian felt it start. A hum in his bones that deepened until it became a vibration that rattled his teeth. The Clearwater resonance in his body shifted, the familiar dissolution energy taking on a new quality. Not just breaking. Something else. Something he did not have a word for yet.
His eyes closed. The System interface filled his vision.
[DING!]
[Version 3.0 (Creation Tier) update INITIATING.]
[Phase 1: System architecture recalibration.]
[The Host’s probability engine is being restructured to support creation-tier operations.]
[Phase 2: Talent pathway expansion.]
[The Host’s Clearwater Talent is being expanded to include creation-side capabilities.]
[Warning: This phase may cause discomfort.]
[Phase 3: Skill integration.]
[Existing Skills will be evaluated for creation-tier applications.]
[New Skill tree: CRAFTING will be unlocked.]
[New Skill tree: CULTIVATION will be unlocked.]
[New Skill tree: CONCEPT will be partially unlocked.]
[Estimated time: 8 hours, 42 minutes.]
[The System will provide updates as phases complete.]
The hours passed in fragments. Alvian drifted in and out of awareness. Each phase of the update brought changes he could feel but not fully process.
Phase 1 completed at 3:14 AM. His probability engine, the cosmic roulette wheel that had been with him since the first beetle kill, shifted. The wheel remained, but now a second wheel existed beside it. Not brass and steel like the proficiency wheel. Something new. Something made of light and possibility. The creation wheel.
[DING!]
[Phase 1 complete. Creation Wheel unlocked.]
[Every time the Host creates something, a creation multiplier is rolled.]
[Creation EXP is awarded for acts of making, building, and cultivating.]
[Creation EXP can be allocated to Stats, Skills, or Items.]
[The creation wheel uses the same probability tiers as the primary wheel.]
[Common. Uncommon. Rare. Epic. God Roll.]
[Creation is gambling.]
[Everything is gambling.]
[The System finds this appropriate.]
Phase 2 completed at 6:03 AM. The Talent pathway expansion was the painful part. His Clearwater channels, already widened by Serah’s circuitry work and the deep restructuring sessions, were stretched further. The dissolution energy that had defined his Talent for months gained a new property. Not just breaking bonds. Reforming them. Controlling how things came back together after they were broken.
He screamed once. Serah’s hand found his and held on. He did not remember her crossing the room. He did not remember reaching for her. But when the pain faded, her fingers were laced through his and her warmth was the only thing keeping him anchored to the room.
[DING!]
[Phase 2 complete. Talent pathway expansion successful.]
[Clearwater Talent has evolved.]
[Previous classification: Clearwater/Dissolution (Abnormal)]
[New classification: Clearwater/Dissolution/Reformation (Unique)]
[The Host can now control the reformation of dissolved matter.]
[Dissolved components can be redirected, restructured, or rebuilt into new configurations.]
[This is creation through dissolution.]
[Break something down to its components.]
[Rebuild the components into something new.]
[The cycle is complete.]
Phase 3 completed at 8:29 AM. Alvian opened his eyes. The cache room was bright with morning light filtering through cracks in the collapsed entrance. Serah was asleep on her crate, her circuitry pad dark, her hand still in his. Tobias was snoring softly near the door.
The System interface glowed in his vision.
[DING!]
[Version 3.0 (Creation Tier) ONLINE.]
[New Skill Tree: CRAFTING unlocked.]
[Crafting allows the Host to create items, weapons, and tools using dissolution-reformation principles. Materials are broken down to component molecules and reassembled into new configurations. Crafting proficiency can be multiplied by the creation wheel.]
[New Skill Tree: CULTIVATION unlocked.]
[Cultivation allows the Host to modify living organisms at the molecular level. Healing, enhancement, and genetic modification are possible. Cultivation proficiency can be multiplied by the creation wheel.]
[New Skill Tree: CONCEPT partially unlocked.]
[Concept allows the Host to create abstract concepts, laws, and rules. This tree requires additional milestones to fully unlock. Current access: limited.]
[New Skill: MOLECULAR FORGE (S-Rank) unlocked.]
[Effect: The Host can disassemble any material into component molecules and reassemble them into new configurations. The process costs Essence proportional to the material’s complexity and the reformation’s precision. Simple materials (iron, wood, stone) cost minimal Essence. Complex materials (magitech, dimensional crystal, living tissue) cost significant Essence.]
[Cost: Variable (10 to 1000 Essence per use, depending on material complexity).]
[This Skill is the foundation of Creation Tier operations.]
[All future creation Skills build on Molecular Forge.]
[The System congratulates the Host on reaching Version 3.0.]
[The System would like to note that this is the fastest any Host has reached Creation Tier.]
Alvian read the notification three times. Molecular Forge. Dissolution and reformation controlled at will. He could break anything down and rebuild it as something else. Iron into steel. Stone into crystal. Damaged tissue into healthy tissue.
