Chapter 85: Building From Broken Things

"A password. Leo draws something. I bring someone. They show me the drawing. If it matches, they are safe."

Martha looked at Leo. Leo grabbed his charcoal and started sketching a beetle with wings. Martha nodded slowly.

"Go," she said. "Be careful. And Alvian?"

He stopped at the door.

"Bring Tobias back in one piece. That man has suffered enough for one lifetime."

---

The twelfth level smelled like antiseptic and burnt solder. Wendell Pike’s clinic occupied a back room behind a noodle shop that had closed weeks ago. The pharmacist himself met them at the door, his thin face drawn and tired.

"Your friend is alive," Wendell said before Alvian could speak. "Barely. The shoulder where his mechanical arm was attached is infected. I have been treating it with what I have, but he needs a real surgeon."

Alvian pushed past him. The back room was small and poorly lit. Tobias lay on a cot, his face grey with pain and blood loss. The stump where his mechanical arm had been was bandaged heavily, the wrappings stained brown. His remaining hand twitched against the cot’s edge.

"Tobias."

The old scavenger’s eyes opened. Cloudy. Then sharp. He saw Alvian and something crossed his face that was not quite relief and not quite fear. Recognition. Understanding.

"Boy." His voice was a rasp. "You look like shit."

"You look worse."

Tobias tried to laugh. It became a cough. Serah moved to his side, her circuitry pad already scanning his injuries. Her silver-trace forearms glowed faint blue as she channeled diagnostic Essence through his body.

"Multiple infections in the shoulder joint," she said. "Bone-deep tissue damage. Essence pathways ruptured where the arm was forcibly removed. He needs treatment that exceeds what this clinic can provide."

Alvian allocated 500,000 EXP to INT.

[DING!]

[INT: 207 → 209]

[EXP Bank: 10,400,000]

The increase was marginal. His INT was reaching the point where each additional point required exponential investment. But even two points sharpened his processing enough to see what his INT 207 had missed.

Tobias’s Essence pathways. The rupture. The damage.

’If Clearwater dissolves bonds, and Essence pathways are bonds between spiritual channels, then I can dissolve the damaged portions and let the healthy tissue regrow.’

The thought was absurd. He was not a healer. He was a dissolution engine. But the System had been talking about creation. About building from what was broken.

[DING!]

[Version 3.0 (Creation Tier) evaluation: ONGOING]

[Host has identified potential creative application of dissolution principles.]

[Condition progress: 72%.]

[Dissolution of damaged tissue to promote regeneration.]

[This is creation through selective destruction.]

"The damaged pathways in his shoulder," Alvian said. "I can dissolve them. The ruptured channels, the infected tissue, the scar tissue blocking regrowth. Clearwater Palm at minimal output. Controlled. Surgical. If I dissolve only what is broken, the healthy pathways can reconnect."

Serah stared at him. Tobias stared at him. Wendell, lurking in the doorway, stared at him.

"You want to use acid to heal someone," Serah said flatly.

"I want to use dissolution to remove what is broken so healing can occur. That is what dissolution does. It breaks bonds. Damaged tissue is broken bonds. I would be doing what Clearwater already does, just directed at a target that needs breaking."

Serah’s circuitry pad hummed as she ran calculations. Her INT, while not at Alvian’s level, was still well above average. He could see her processing the logic.

"The precision required is astronomical," she said. "One micron too deep and you dissolve healthy nerve tissue. One micron too shallow and the damaged pathways remain. You would need to map every damaged channel in real time and adjust your dissolution output continuously."

"I can see them," Alvian said. He activated his Clearwater resonance. The familiar hum spread through his bones. "With INT 209 and Clearwater’s molecular perception, I can see the damaged bonds. They are different from healthy ones. Weaker. Incorrect. Like cracks in glass compared to solid glass."

Serah was quiet for a long moment. Then she held out her circuitry pad. "Let me map the pathways first. My equipment can create a surgical guide. Follow my readings. Dissolve exactly what I highlight and nothing else."

She was offering to help. Not just as a scientist. As a partner.

"Okay," he said.

Tobias grabbed Alvian’s wrist with his remaining hand. The grip was weak but insistent. "Boy. If you melt my shoulder off, I am going to haunt you from whatever afterlife accepts bitter old scavengers."

"Noted."

Serah worked for six minutes. Her circuitry pad traced the damage in Tobias’s shoulder, mapping each ruptured pathway, each infected channel, each piece of scar tissue blocking regrowth. The image built on her screen like a three-dimensional map of destruction.

"Seventeen damaged points," she said. "Concentrate dissolution at each point for exactly point-three seconds. No more. No less. The healthy tissue surrounding each point will absorb residual dissolution without damage, but only if the exposure is brief."

Alvian knelt beside the cot. His right hand glowed faintly with Clearwater energy. Not the Domain. Not Coating. Just the raw Talent resonance, controlled and focused.

He touched Tobias’s shoulder. The old scavenger flinched. Alvian held still.

Point one. His palm pressed against the first damaged pathway. Clearwater Palm activated at minimal output. He felt the damaged bonds dissolve, the incorrect structure breaking apart into components that Tobias’s body could reabsorb.

Point two. Point three. Point four.

Each touch lasted less than a second. Each dissolution was precise. His INT 209 tracked every molecule, every bond, every break. The damaged tissue dissolved. The healthy tissue remained.

By point twelve, Tobias’s breathing changed. The pain that had been constant for days was easing as the damaged pathways stopped sending incorrect signals.

By point seventeen, it was done.

Alvian pulled his hand back. His Essence had dropped from 145 to 132. The cost was minimal. The effect was not.

Tobias flexed his remaining hand. Then his shoulder. The movement was smooth, pain-free, for the first time since the Magnus raid.

"You crazy bastard," Tobias whispered. "You actually did it."

[DING!]

[Version 3.0 (Creation Tier) evaluation: ONGOING]

[Condition: One act of creation using dissolution principles]

[Host has performed selective dissolution to promote biological regeneration.]

[This qualifies as an act of creation.]

[Dissolution removed what was broken.]

[The body will now rebuild what was removed.]

[Creation through destruction.]

[The cycle is complete.]

[Condition: FULLY MET.]

[Version 3.0 (Creation Tier) unlock: INITIATING.]

[Estimated time to completion: 12 hours.]

[The System suggests the Host find a safe location.]

[The System also suggests the Host prepare for significant changes.]

Alvian stared at the notification. Twelve hours. Version 3.0 was coming. Creation Tier. The next evolution of the System that had carried him from E-Rank trash to conceptual combatant.

He looked at Tobias, sitting up on the cot with color returning to his face. He looked at Serah, her circuitry pad still glowing with the surgical map she had created. He looked at Wendell, standing in the doorway with his mouth hanging open.

"Twelve hours," Alvian said. "I need somewhere safe. Somewhere nobody will find me."

Tobias coughed. "I know a place. Old delver cache in the fourteenth level. Sealed since before the Cataclysm. Nobody goes there because the entrance collapsed twenty years ago."

"Can you get us in?"

Tobias flexed his shoulder again. A grin crossed his weathered face. "With what you just did to me? I can walk through walls."

The Chapter ended with them moving. Alvian, Serah, Tobias. Three people heading deeper into the Undercity, toward a sealed cache that had been forgotten for decades.

Behind them, in the noodle shop’s back room, Wendell Pike picked up his communicator and stared at the bounty notification on his screen. Five hundred thousand credits. A fortune. Enough to leave the Undercity forever, buy a house on the surface, never smell recycled air again.

He looked at the door where the three had left. He looked at the bounty.

He deleted the notification.

Some debts were not measured in credits.

---

The fourteenth level was older than the rest of the Undercity.

Alvian felt it in the architecture. The walls here were not metal and concrete like the upper levels. They were stone. Actual stone, cut and fitted by hands that had worked before the Cataclysm shattered the world. The corridors were wider, the ceilings higher, and the air tasted different. Earthy. Mineral. Like breathing inside a cave that remembered being a mountain.

Tobias led them through passages that had not seen footsteps in years. His remaining hand traced the walls, finding markings only he could read. Old delver signs. Navigation codes from before the Guilds standardized their mapping systems.

"Left here," Tobias said. "Through the broken watermain. Watch your step, the floor gives way to a drop about three meters down."
