Chapter 74: The Vault Breach, One Copper Credit
The dissolution was slow. Energy constructs resisted chemical breakdown better than physical matter. The field’s molecular bonds were reinforced by dimensional energy, making them harder to dissolve. But harder wasn’t impossible. The Clearwater ate through the reinforcement layer by layer, bond by bond, like acid eating through wax.
[DING!]
[Clearwater Palm vs S-Rank Containment Field.]
[Dissolution rate: 50% of standard physical matter rate.]
[Estimated breach time: 12 seconds.]
[Containment field integrity: 78%... 54%... 31%...]
[Field registering dissolution as "natural decay."]
[Breach detection threshold: NOT TRIGGERED.]
The field flickered. Cracked. The cracks spread like frost on a window, each one leaking golden light from the vials within. The detection algorithms scanned for hostile Essence signatures, for A-Rank or above Talents attempting forced entry. They found nothing. Clearwater Palm was E-Rank in its base form, enhanced to D-Rank by Serah’s circuitry. The ward’s detection threshold was calibrated for A-Rank threats. A D-Rank Skill dissolving an S-Rank field didn’t register as an attack. It registered as entropy.
The field collapsed into harmless light particles. No alarm. No trigger. No city-wide broadcast. The ward’s final report logged the containment field’s failure as "natural degradation due to structural age." The irony would have made Alvian smile if he had time for smiling.
He didn’t.
He reached out and took one vial. The glass was warm in his hand. The golden liquid inside pulsed against his palm, alive with phoenix essence. One drop could cure Martha’s crystallization. The full vial contained enough for ten doses.
He left the other two vials on the pedestal. Untouched. Untaken. He didn’t need them. He wasn’t here to rob a kingdom. He was here to save his mother.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a single copper credit. Worthless. The lowest denomination of currency in Vaeloria, barely enough to buy a piece of bread. He placed it on the pedestal where the third vial had been.
Payment.
Not because anyone would understand the gesture. Not because it made legal or economic sense. But because it mattered to him. He wasn’t a thief. He was a buyer who set his own price. The King could keep the rest. Alvian only needed one.
[DING!]
[Item acquired: Tears of the Phoenix (1 vial).]
[Rarity: S-Rank Elixir.]
[Contents: Approximately 10 doses.]
[Required for Martha Vance’s cure: 1 dose.]
[Remaining doses after cure: 9.]
[System Note: The Host left payment.]
[System Note: One copper credit for an S-Rank elixir worth more than a Dukedom.]
[System Note: The System calculates this as the worst trade deal in recorded history.]
[System Note: The System approves wholeheartedly.]
He pocketed the vial. The warmth against his chest was steady, a small sun in a glass container. Martha’s cure. His mother’s life. The thing he had crossed the kingdom, killed a Duke, fought a Calamity Boss, and broken into the Royal Treasury to obtain.
Now he just needed to leave.
He activated Void Step: Annihilation a second time. Destination: a rooftop one mile south of the palace, in the Upper Ward’s merchant district. Close enough to reach the Undercity on foot within twenty minutes. Far enough from the Treasury that the departure vacuum wouldn’t damage anything important.
The dissolution took him again. That brief, horrible moment of non-existence. His body became Clearwater essence. His consciousness floated in the void between spaces. He felt the bonds break, felt the structure collapse, felt himself become nothing before becoming something again.
He materialized on the rooftop. Cold air hit his skin. The stars above Vaeloria were bright, the sky cleared by his Aura Explosion days ago. The palace was visible in the distance, its white stone walls glowing faintly in the moonlight.
Behind him, in the Treasury, a three-meter sphere of dissolution detonated harmlessly in the empty vault. The pedestal corroded. The remaining two vials of Tears of the Phoenix sat untouched on the damaged crystal. The copper credit dissolved into nothing, leaving no evidence he had ever been there except the missing vial and the corroded pedestal.
[DING!]
[Void Step successful.]
[Arrival: Upper Ward, Merchant District Rooftop.]
[Cost: 50 Essence.]
[Essence: 230 → 180.]
[Departure vacuum: DETONATED at Treasury.]
[Damage: Pedestal corroded. Vials intact. Evidence of intrusion: minimal.]
[Time elapsed since initial breach: 2 minutes, 14 seconds.]
[Guard response: En route to guest quarters. Search pattern expanding.]
[Probability of discovery: 12% and rising.]
[System Note: The Host should leave now.]
[System Note: The Host should definitely not admire the stars.]
The palace erupted. Alarm bells rang across the white stone towers. Lights flickered on in every window. Guard formations mobilized in the courtyard, their shouts echoing across the grounds. The King would know within minutes. The dissolved Treasury door. The corroded pedestal. The missing vial.
Alvian didn’t care. He had what he came for.
He ran. He leaped across gaps between buildings, his feet finding purchase on slate and tile with perfect precision. The Upper Ward’s merchant district blurred past him. Bakeries, tailors, magitech shops, all closed for the night, their dark windows reflecting the moon and the distant glow of the palace alarms.
The Undercity entrance appeared ahead. A maintenance hatch in the thirteenth level’s service corridor, hidden behind a collapsed wall that Tobias had shown him weeks ago. He dropped through the hatch and landed silently on the metal grating below.
The familiar smell of recycled air and machine oil filled his lungs. Home. Not the apartment yet, but close. The thirteenth level’s perpetual twilight wrapped around him like a blanket.
The vial pulsed against his chest. Warm. Alive. Golden light leaked through his fingers when he pressed his hand against his pocket.
Martha was sleeping. She wouldn’t know he had been gone. She wouldn’t know he had broken into the Royal Treasury, stolen a national treasure, and left a copper credit as payment. She would just wake up and find her son kneeling beside her bed with medicine that could save her life.
That was enough.
[Time until Fate Enforcer deployment: 46 hours.]
[Martha’s cure: IN HAND.]
[Next objective: Administer Tears of the Phoenix.]
[Following objective: Prepare for conceptual entity combat.]
[The System notes that the Host has successfully stolen from the most secure vault in the kingdom.]
[The System notes that the Host left payment.]
[The System notes that the King will be very angry.]
[The System suggests the Host cure his mother before dealing with the consequences.]
Alvian moved through the Undercity tunnels with practiced silence. The thirteenth level was quiet. The Guild purge had ended. The Bloodhounds were dead. The Magnus family was destroyed. For now, at least, the Undercity was safe.
He reached the apartment door at 3:14 AM. His hand rested on the handle for one second. Just one second. To breathe. To feel the weight of what he was about to do.
Then he opened the door and stepped inside.
—
The apartment was dark.
Alvian stepped inside and closed the door without sound. The hinges didn’t creak. He had oiled them three weeks ago with scavenged machine grease, one of those small maintenance tasks that kept the Undercity apartment from falling apart.
The room smelled like charcoal dust and medicine. Leo’s drawings covered every wall. Stick figures and monsters and glowing swords, drawn with the desperate intensity of a child trying to make sense of a world that didn’t make sense. The newest one showed a stick figure standing under a pillar of light, surrounded by smaller figures running away.
Leo was curled beside Martha on the bed. His small body rose and fell with each breath, charcoal-stained fingers clutching a wadded drawing to his chest. Asleep. Good.
Martha was sleeping too. Her breathing was shallow, the crystalline rasp still present in every inhale. That grinding sound of glass on glass that had become the background noise of Alvian’s life. The grey patches on her fingers caught the faint light from the window, glassy and wrong.
Alvian knelt beside the bed. His INT 192 processed Martha’s condition in a single sweep. Heart rate: 62 beats per minute, weak. Lung capacity: 34% of normal, diminishing. Crystallization spread: 6% of total body mass, concentrated in bronchial passages and fingertip capillaries. Estimated time to critical failure: 18 days.
Eighteen days. He had the cure in his pocket.
He pulled out the vial. The golden liquid inside glowed with inner fire, pulsing slowly like a heartbeat. Warmth radiated through the glass against his palm. The light was soft, alive, nothing like the cold prismatic glow of System notifications. This was something older. Something that existed before the Cataclysm, before the Rifts, before Awakened Talents and probability engines.
The Tears of the Phoenix. S-Rank elixir. One of three in existence.
He’d broken into the Royal Treasury to get it. He’d left a copper credit as payment.
Martha didn’t need to know any of that.
He uncapped the vial. The scent hit him immediately. Sunlight and rain and something he couldn’t name, something that smelled like hope if hope had a smell. The golden liquid didn’t pour like liquid should. It moved with intention, climbing the glass walls, reaching toward Martha’s lips as if it knew what it was for.
