Chapter 73: The Vault Approach, 2:17 AM

  • Next Chapter

One in. One out.

He through the heist sequence one final time. Step one: Void Step from guest room to Treasury corridor. The departure vacuum would detonate behind him, dissolving everything in a three-meter radius. The bed. The door. Probably wounding the Knights outside. That would trigger every alarm in the palace, but the guards would run to the guest quarters, not the Treasury. They would think he was still there, caught in his own destruction.

Wrong direction.

Step two: Clearwater Palm through the Treasury door. Three inches of reinforced steel with dimensional runes. The runes would try to reinforce the door with dimensional energy. Clearwater would eat the energy too. It didn’t distinguish between matter and energy. It broke bonds. All bonds.

Step three: dissolve the containment field around the Tears of the Phoenix. S-Rank ward designed to trigger city-wide alarm if breached by force. But Clearwater Palm wasn’t force. It was dissolution. If the ward registered the collapse as natural decay rather than a breach, no alarm would trigger.

Step four: Void Step out of the palace. Anywhere within five miles. Rooftop. Alley. Somewhere quiet where he could disappear into the Undercity before the King even knew he was gone.

Four steps. Two teleportations. One hundred Essence. Four minutes.

The clock on the wall showed 2:14 AM. Three minutes until the guard rotation gap.

Alvian opened his eyes. The ceiling above him was painted with Royal Family heroes covered in gold leaf. Men and women who had conquered Calamity Rifts and built a kingdom on the bones of the old world.

He didn’t care about any of them.

He sat up. The silk sheets rustled. Outside the door, the two Knights breathed steadily. Professional. Alert. Bored out of their minds but too disciplined to show it.

2:15 AM.

He stood. His bare feet touched the cold marble floor. The Essence-dampening crystal behind the wood panels hummed, trying to suppress his Skill output by twenty percent. It didn’t matter. Void Step operated through dissolution, not Essence projection. The dampener couldn’t stop what it couldn’t classify.

2:16 AM.

He checked his status panel one final time.

Everything in place. Every number where it should be. Every Skill ready to fire.

He selected his destination in his mind. The Treasury corridor. Sub-level 3. The exact spot he had calculated based on ward density and structural layout. Three meters from the Treasury door. Close enough to reach it in one step. Far enough to avoid appearing directly inside a ward’s scanning radius.

2:17 AM.

He activated Void Step: Annihilation.

[DING!]

[Void Step: Annihilation activated.]

[Destination: Sub-level 3, Treasury Corridor.]

[Cost: 50 Essence.]

[Essence: 280 → 230.]

The experience was nothing like he expected. His body didn’t move. It didn’t blur or flash or shimmer. It simply stopped being here and started being there. The transition took less than a millisecond, but he perceived the intermediate state with horrible clarity.

For one fraction of a moment, his body dissolved. Not painfully. Not dramatically. Just... ceased. His flesh became Clearwater essence. His bones became acid vapor. His consciousness floated in a void of pure dissolution, unmoored from physical form, drifting through dissolved space like ink through water.

He felt what his power did to others.

Not pain. Cessation. The feeling of bonds breaking. Of structure collapsing. Of identity dissolving into nothing. The same entropy he had inflicted on Sludge Beetles and Ironjaw Rats and Bloodhound mercenaries and the Duke’s magma heart and the Colossus’s crystal core. He experienced it from the inside, and it was quiet and absolute and final.

Then he was somewhere else.

The Treasury corridor materialized around him. Dark stone walls. Dim Essence-crystal lights embedded in the ceiling every ten meters. The air was cold and still and tasted like recycled magic. Wards pulsed along the walls, scanning for intruders.

The wards flashed. His Essence signature had appeared inside their scanning radius. The detection grid lit up like a Christmas tree, probing his Talent, his Level, his Skill configuration. The spatial locks activated, trying to anchor his coordinates and freeze him in place.

They found nothing to anchor.

He hadn’t teleported through locked space. He had dissolved the space itself and reconstituted beyond the lock. The wards reported an anomaly, ran their classification algorithms, failed to categorize the event, and defaulted to a low-priority alert. No alarm triggered. The system couldn’t flag what it couldn’t understand.

[DING!]

[Void Step successful.]

[Arrival: Sub-level 3, Treasury Corridor.]

[Spatial locks: BYPASSED.]

[Ward detection: ANOMALY (uncategorized). No alarm triggered.]

[Departure vacuum: DETONATED at guest quarters.]

[Damage radius: 3 meters.]

[Hostile casualties: 0 (edge contact only).]

[Royal Knight armor corrosion: Moderate.]

[Royal Knight weapons: Dissolved.]

[System Note: The Knights outside the guest room are screaming.]

[System Note: The palace guard is running toward the guest quarters.]

[System Note: They are running in the wrong direction.]

[System Note: The System finds this very satisfying.]

Alvian allowed himself one breath. The dissolution echo still hummed in his bones, the memory of what his power felt like from the inside. He pushed it down. Filed it away. Dealt with it later.

The Treasury door was five meters ahead.

The door was a massive slab of reinforced steel, three inches thick and inscribed with dimensional runes that pulsed with blue-white energy. The runes were designed to reinforce the door’s structural integrity, channeling dimensional energy through the metal to make it resistant to physical and magical assault. An A-Rank Talent user could hit this door for an hour and barely scratch the surface.

Alvian raised his hand. His Clearwater Palm glowed faintly, the hydroxyl radicals already gathering at his fingertips, eager to break something.

He pressed his palm against the steel.

The metal hissed. The runes flared, pouring dimensional energy into the door to reinforce it. The energy met the Clearwater and dissolved too. The runes flickered, struggled, tried to reinforce themselves. The Clearwater ate the reinforcement. The metal softened, pitted, and began to flow like wet clay under his hand.

He pushed deeper. The door didn’t open. It ceased to exist. A person-shaped hole appeared in the three-inch steel slab, edges smoking with residual acid. The dimensional runes guttered and died along the hole’s border, their energy pathways severed.

He stepped through.

The Treasury opened before him.

---

The Treasury was bigger than he expected.

A circular vault, fifty meters in diameter, with a domed ceiling twenty meters overhead. The walls were lined with shelves carved directly into the stone, each one holding relics, weapons, and sealed containers arranged with museum precision. Gold bars stacked in neat pyramids. Credit chips sorted by denomination in crystal cases. Essence stones glowing with stored dimensional energy. Pre-Cataclysm artifacts rested behind glass displays, their purposes long forgotten but their value incalculable.

The wealth of a kingdom, concentrated in a single room.

Alvian ignored all of it.

He processed the room’s contents in a single sweep. Cataloged. Dismissed. None of it mattered. Gold couldn’t cure Martha. Credit chips couldn’t buy back the time he’d lost. The artifacts were interesting but irrelevant to the two problems that actually mattered: his mother’s crystallization and the Fate Enforcers arriving in 47 hours.

His Clearwater resonance hummed in his bones. The golden liquid he was searching for had a specific energy signature, a warmth that his Talent recognized on a fundamental level. Phoenix essence. Life energy compressed into physical form. It called to his dissolution nature like a fire calls to darkness, two opposing forces aware of each other’s presence.

The pedestal sat at the vault’s center. Condensed Essence crystal, the same material as the King’s throne, shaped into a column one meter tall. On top of the column, three vials of golden liquid glowed with inner fire. The light pulsed slowly, rhythmically, like a heartbeat.

The Tears of the Phoenix.

He crossed the vault floor in four strides. The stone beneath his feet was polished to a mirror shine, reflecting his torn clothes and bare feet. The vials grew brighter as he approached, as if responding to his presence. The warmth intensified. He could feel it on his face, a gentle heat that had nothing to do with temperature and everything to do with essence.

The pedestal was warded.

The final layer of defense. An S-Rank containment field shimmered around the three vials, a sphere of condensed Essence designed to trigger a city-wide alarm if breached by force. The field was sophisticated, layered with detection algorithms that would identify any attempted breach and broadcast an alert to every Royal Knight, Guild Enforcer, and military unit within fifty kilometers.

Alvian didn’t use force.

He placed his palm against the containment field. The Clearwater Palm activated. The field’s energy construct met his hydroxyl radicals and began to break down.
