I Summon Female Knights
Chapter 42: Void Stalkers
Tucking his hands into the pockets of his dark hoodie, Raphael set off into the rainy night.
He bypassed the brightly lit main thoroughfares of Jiston, slipping into the dark, industrial access corridors and disused bypass roads running parallel to the city’s freight rails. He started at a steady, rhythmic trot, but within minutes, he channeled a micro-thin layer of the Sovereign’s Veil directly into his calves, thighs, and lower back.
The effect was instantaneous. His stride lengthened dramatically, his boots barely grazing the wet asphalt before launching his heavy frame forward in thirty-foot glides.
SWISH. SWISH. SWISH.
To any onlooker perched on a distant highway overpass, he appeared as nothing more than a blurred, dark shadow tearing through the rain at highway speeds. His godlike neural processing speed calibrated every footfall, dodging slick oil patches, broken pavement, and debris without dropping a single mile per hour from his pace. His lungs expanded smoothly, drawing in the cold, damp air; his core cycled pure, unrefined mana, converting the kinetic strain into an effortless, continuous loop of motion.
An hour and twenty minutes later, the dense urban sprawl of Jiston faded into the overgrown, rusted silence of Hiwo.
Raphael slowed his pace, coming to a silent halt on the broken concrete of Sector 9. He wasn’t panting. Not a single drop of sweat broke across his forehead, and his heart beat with a slow, steady rhythm. The seventy-kilometer run had done little more than warm his muscles and sharpen his focus.
He stepped inside the dark perimeter of a disused, cavernous train depot. The air here was thick, cold, and heavy with the metallic, ozone stench of corrupted mana.
"Vanessa," Raphael murmured softly into the shadows of his hood. "Locate the exact tear."
A swirl of violet-black mist materialized beside him, and the dark Saintess emerged silently. Without needing a verbal order, she extended her pale hand, her fingers weaving an ancient summoning sign. The shadows coalesced, and the Umbral Corvid materialized on her wrist, its burning silver eyes flashing in the gloom.
The shadow-crow let out a low, silent screech that echoed directly in Raphael’s mind, launching itself toward the far end of the depot where a subterranean maintenance pit dipped into the earth.
Raphael followed the familiar, stepping past rusted train chassis and shattered glass until he reached the edge of the pit.
The spatial distortion had deteriorated rapidly over the past week. Floating three feet above the cracked concrete floor of the lower pit was a jagged, eight-foot tear in reality- the Iron Spire of the Sky-Shattered Vault. The rift was unstable, its edges flickering violently with dark purple lightning as corrupted mana bled outward, pooling like black oil along the ground.
CRACK-THUM.
A sharp, dimensional tremor rattled the depot floor. The tear shuddered violently, expanding by another foot as the barrier between realms weakened.
Three dark quadrupeds detached themselves from the pooling shadows beneath the rift, stepping out into the physical world.
They were void beasts- horrific, wolf-like abominations roughly the size of bears. They possessed no fur or skin; their frames were constructed from shifting, pitch-black smoke and jagged plates of obsidian-like bone that floated semi-detached around their spines and snouts. Where their eyes should have been, empty, hollow sockets dripped viscous black void-tar onto the floor.
The three void-wolves turned their snouts toward the top of the pit, their hollow sockets locking onto Raphael’s towering six-foot-seven frame. They let out low, unnatural, reverberating snarls that sounded like grinding glass.
"Three escaped entities," Vanessa noted coldly, stepping up beside her master. "Their physical forms are unstable, held together by corrupted mana. Standard kinetic strikes will bounce off their floating bone-plates."
"They’re just practice," Raphael replied, his deep baritone dripping with absolute detachment.
He reached over his broad right shoulder, his fingers wrapping firmly around the leather-wrapped hilt of the Obsidian-Spine Greatsword. Simultaneously, his left hand dropped to his hip, gripping the heavy, steel-capped haft of the Eclipse Battle Axe.
With a single, smooth motion, Raphael drew both D-Tier weapons.
The broad, five-foot iron blade of the greatsword hummed as it cleared its scabbard, while the heavy, curved bit of the battle axe glinted with a lethal, dark luster.
The lead void-wolf didn’t hesitate. It kicked off the cracked concrete with explosive speed, its smoky form blurring into a streak of black mist as it leaped across the pit, its gaping maw of obsidian teeth aimed directly at Raphael’s throat.
Guided by his godlike processing speed, the wolf’s blinding assault appeared agonizingly slow to Raphael’s luminous silver eyes.
He didn’t step back. He stepped in.
Integrating the foundational mechanics of Tier 3: Veil-Infused Flow, Raphael channeled a dense, micro-thin current of the Sovereign’s Veil through his arms and directly into his weapons.
He swung the broad Obsidian-Spine Greatsword in a swift, rising left-to-right arc. The mana-infused blade cut through the air with a razor-sharp, high-frequency hiss.
SLASH!
The greatsword’s sweeping edge struck the leaping beast, severing its floating obsidian snout and shearing clean through its smoky torso before its jaws could reach him. The compressed mana coating the blade disrupted the beast’s void-tether, causing its form to instantly dissolve into a cloud of harmless, inert black dust.
Without dropping his momentum, Raphael used the kinetic recoil of the sword swing to pivot his hips smoothly to the left.
The second void-wolf had already flanked him, lunging from the shadows with its razor-sharp bone claws extended toward his ribs.
Raphael’s left arm whipped downward like a falling guillotine. He drove the heavy bit of the Eclipse Battle Axe straight down into the center of the second wolf’s skull.
CRACK-BOOM!
The axe’s armor-piercing spike caved through the beast’s floating headplate, the Veil-infused impact detonating inside its core. The second wolf shattered into a shockwave of disintegrating dark particles that blew back the dust on the concrete floor.
The third and final void-wolf skidded to a halt, its hollow sockets trembling as it registered the instant obliteration of its pack. Instinctual, primal terror seized the beast, overriding its hunger. It turned to leap back toward the safety of the unstable portal.
"Too late," Raphael murmured.
Raphael executed a fluid, dual-weapon cross-cleave, crossing the broad face of his greatsword over the haft of his battle axe before snapping both arms outward in an explosive, scissor-like motion.
SHRRR-BOOM!
A twin arc of concentrated, silvery-violet mana erupted from the blades, flying through the air like a lethal crescent wave. The projection caught the fleeing void-wolf in mid-air, bisecting its form cleanly before slamming into the concrete wall behind it, leaving a deep, scorched X-mark in the masonry.
The third beast dissolved into dust before it even touched the ground.
Raphael smoothly lowered his weapons, the micro-thin violet light fading back into the steel. He rolled his broad shoulders, his dark, messy hair shading his glowing silver eyes as he looked down into the pulsing, crimson tear of The Shadow-Veined Depths.
[ENTITIES ELIMINATED: VOID-STALKER x3]
- Exp Gained: Minor.
- Core Alignment: Optimal.
Raphael resheathed the Eclipse Battle Axe at his hip and rested the broad flat of the Obsidian-Spine Greatsword over his shoulder. He stepped down into the maintenance pit, stopping directly in front of the flickering, unstable rift.
"The appetizers are done," Raphael said, his deep baritone carrying an icy, absolute authority that echoed through the disused depot. With Vanessa slipping into his shadow, the towering, silver-eyed Sovereign stepped boldly through the tear, vanishing into the dark, hidden depths of the dungeon.
