I Summon Female Knights
Chapter 43: The Chains
The dark tear of the rift hummed with a low, bone-rattling frequency, casting jagged violet light across the damp concrete of the subterranean maintenance depot. The air immediately surrounding the portal felt heavy and distorted, charged with a strange, ozone-like pressure that made the skin prickle.
Raphael stood at the edge of the pit, his towering frame poised and balanced. Before crossing the threshold into the uncharted, unstable domain, he adhered strictly to tactical discipline... something ingrained into him over the weeks by Vanessa. Rushing blindly into an unknown space was the hallmark of an amateur- a mistake a supposed leader could not afford.
"Secure the perimeter, Vanessa," Raphael commanded quietly.
"As you wish, Sovereign," Vanessa’s silk-soft voice whispered from the shadows.
In a fluid motion, she raised her dark relic-staff, and a ring of faint, violet-black ethereal flames erupted in a twenty-meter radius around the trench. The magical barrier served as an early-warning tripwire, designed to snap shut on any hidden void-stalkers attempting to flank them from the surrounding tunnels or rusting train carriages.
Simultaneously, Raphael deployed the Umbral Corvid. The obsidian-feathered familiar launched from his shoulder, its burning silver eyes cutting through the gloom of the massive, abandoned depot. Through their shared mental link, Raphael’s vision split, allowing him to perceive the terminal in dual perspectives: his own physical vantage point and the bird’s thermal, mana-sensitive gaze scanning the shadows above.
For three minutes, Raphael meticulously swept the perimeter.
The familiar’s silver eyes darted into empty freight cars, behind crumbling concrete support pillars, and deep into the pitch-black drainage culverts leading away from Sector 9. The corrupted mana trail left by the dungeon was dense, but the Corvid’s sharp instincts confirmed that the three void-wolves he had already obliterated were the only entities that had successfully breached the threshold before stabilization. The surrounding wasteland of Hiwo remained empty.
"Perimeter clear," Raphael muttered, his voice echoing off the rusted steel walls.
With the flanks secured, Raphael turned his attention back to the massive spatial tear hanging before him. He stepped straight through the pulsating tear, the spatial fold swallowing him whole as Vanessa melted seamlessly into his shadow.
...
The transition was instantaneous, accompanied by a sudden, weightless rush of pressure as the physical world vanished.
When Raphael’s boots settled onto solid ground, the ambient temperature dropped precipitously. The damp, enclosed concrete of the subterranean train depot was gone, replaced by a breathtaking, terrifying expanse that defied all natural laws of reality.
Raphael stood on the edge of a massive, jagged rock plateau suspended in a boundless, violet-tinted abyssal sky. High above, swirling clouds of dark purple nebula and crackling arcs of violent pink lightning illuminated the dark void.
All around him, dozens of massive, broken landmasses and ruined ancient spires floated weightlessly in the infinite atmosphere. Shattered stone steps, pagoda-like watchtowers, and jagged rock fragments drifted silently in mid-air, suspended over an endless, twilight abyss.
Directly in the center of the vast, fractured void stood a colossal, otherworldly mountain of jagged black stone. Perched atop its sharp, needle-like peak was an imposing, dark gothic castle. It was a monstrous spire of dark iron and black stone that dominated the horizon, surrounded by crackling, violent storms of pure mana.
Raphael adjusted the broad hilt of the greatsword resting over his right shoulder, his luminous eyes sweeping across the sprawling, majestic nightmare.
"So this is a D-tier dungeon?" Raphael muttered softly, his voice echoing into the endless expanse.
"This is no ordinary pocket dimension, Sovereign," Vanessa’s voice echoed softly from his shadow, her tone tinged with rare appreciation. "This is a fragment of a shattered realm, swallowed by the void and anchored here by a powerful core."
Raphael looked down at his feet.
Extending from the edge of the floating island where he stood were thick, ancient iron chains. They were massive, rust-red links the width of a man’s torso that stretched across the open void, connecting his plateau to the neighboring floating islands in a perilous, linear web leading straight toward the central peak.
Before he could calculate the distance, the system interface flared to life directly before his vision:
[DUNGEON IDENTIFIED: THE IRON SPIRE OF THE SKY-SHATTERED VAULT]
- Structure: Fractured Floating Islands & Central Citadel
- Target Objective: Dungeon Core
- Core Location: The Pinnacle Throne Room (Central Dark Castle)
- Navigation Path: Traverse the Chain Bridges & Cleave through Sentinel Islands
---
A translucent radar map materialized in the corner of his field of vision, projecting a glowing crimson marker directly inside the dark, looming castle atop the distant iron peak. The path was crystal clear, but there were no shortcuts. To reach the core, he would have to cross the colossal iron chains, island by island, through whatever void horrors guarded the domain.
"The core is at the top of that dark castle," Raphael said, a cold, dangerous smile touching his lips beneath the shadow of his hood. "Straight through the front door."
"A direct path," Vanessa noted, appearing beside him in a swirl of dark mist, her dark relic-staff humming with eager, rising power. "The beasts of this realm are already congregating on the forward islands. They sense your presence, my Lord."
Over the week, Vanessa’s loyalty had increased and was already 20%. It was massive progress, considering how they started.
Across the nearest chain bridge, two hundred meters away on the adjacent floating landmass, several dark, shifting silhouettes began to emerge from the purple mist. Unnatural, screeching howls echoed across the open void as dozens of void-stalkers and winged gargoyle-like entities caught the scent of his pure, unrefined mana.
Raphael reached over his shoulder, his fingers locking firmly around the leather grip of his greatsword. Simultaneously, his left hand dropped to his hip, drawing the heavy battle axe with a sharp, metallic ring.
The micro-thin layer of the Sovereign’s Veil flared brilliantly under his skin, wrapping his weapons in a high-frequency, silvery-violet edge.
He didn’t hesitate. Raphael stepped onto the massive iron chain, his frame moving with terrifying, effortless grace as he charged directly across the open abyss toward the forward island.
