Chapter 64: Chapter 64: There’s Still Time for Everything

Hearing the word "monogamous," Julian Sterling’s restless heart instantly calmed, as if he had just taken a soothing pill.

As long as Evelyn Grant was faithful, there was no way he could lose.

It wasn’t too late for anything.

...

The case Evelyn Grant was currently handling was a divorce.

But this was different from a typical divorce. The husband had spent years working away from home, sending his entire salary back to his wife.

And yet, his wife had cheated on him with another man.

Now she was the one demanding a divorce, and half of her husband’s assets.

As the husband’s lawyer, it was Evelyn Grant’s duty to protect his best interests.

After the first hearing, she could have left immediately. After all, a lawyer has no obligation to console their client.

But looking at the man before her, his head bowed and his hands hanging limply at his sides, Evelyn Grant felt as if she were looking at herself!

She knew the taste of being betrayed by someone you love.

"Don’t be too hard on yourself. You have to keep moving forward."

Hearing Evelyn Grant’s voice, the husband instinctively looked up.

After a moment’s pause, he gave a bitter smile and shook his head faintly. "I feel like such a failure. How did my life end up like this? For the past few days, I haven’t been able to sleep at night. I just lie there wondering what I did wrong, what I didn’t do well enough to make her leave me so completely."

Evelyn Grant found it rare to see someone so self-reflective, especially at a time like this.

But...

"It’s her life, and it was her choice to make. Don’t overthink it. It won’t do you any good."

Evelyn Grant wasn’t good at offering comfort.

All she could do was share with her client what she herself had felt back when she was in the detention center.

"Ms. Grant, I’ll be okay. You don’t need to worry about me. You’re a good lawyer, and I’m very grateful for everything you’ve done."

Even if he was an uncultured man who didn’t understand the intricacies of the law, he could still sense how dedicated Evelyn Grant was to his case.

"I took the case. This is my job."

"But comforting me isn’t, is it?" The husband managed a weak smile. "You should go. I just want to be alone for a while."

In the courtroom, he had just seen his wife for the first time in almost a month.

It was only natural that he was feeling emotional.

Evelyn Grant patted his shoulder and nodded. "Alright, I’ll be going then."

"Okay."

She gave him one last, worried glance before walking out of the courthouse.

The moment she stepped outside, Evelyn Grant called her mother.

"Mom, I’ll be home in about half an hour! Is there anything you’d like me to pick up on the way? Didn’t Alex say he wanted some of those red bean rice cakes last time? I can grab some for him."

"Oh, don’t bother! I’ll go get them for him tomorrow. Just hurry home. I’ve already made the dumplings. As soon as you get here, we can all eat!"

’All of us?’

There was nothing inherently wrong with the phrase.

But as soon as Evelyn Grant heard it, she instinctively felt that something was off.

"Mom, isn’t Alex still at school? Is he coming home today?"

"Oh, no, he’s not," Chloe Shea replied, not yet sensing anything was amiss.

Evelyn frowned slightly. "Then... besides you and me, who else is at the house?"

"..."

"Tell me the truth. Why were you so insistent that I come home all of a sudden?"

"I... I just missed you, that’s all. What’s wrong with wanting you to come home?"

"There’s nothing wrong with me coming home. But I feel like you’re hiding something from me."

Her words and actions were completely out of the ordinary.
