Chapter 565
Every morning, Morwen would discover plump wild chickens lying quietly in the corner of the courtyard, or buckets of crystal-clear well water placed by the door, this filled her with both gratitude and confusion.
"Who could be helping us in secret?" Morwen sat on the threshold, gazing into the distance.
She knew that anyone in this village with such ability who gave so silently was no ordinary person, but she understood even better that this assistance was antagonizing Young Master Noel, making an already tense situation more precarious.
As time passed, Noel grew increasingly furious with the existence of this mysterious force.
He dispatched subordinates to investigate everywhere, trying to root out this hidden mastermind, but every attempt ended in failure, the other party could always foresee their movements and vanish without a trace.
"Hmph, I’d like to see who has the gall to run wild on my turf," Noel gnashed his teeth, a sinister glint in his eyes.
He decided to intensify his efforts, not only did he want to find the person helping Morwen, but he wanted everyone to know the price of challenging his authority, his prestige would not brook provocation.
At the other end of the village, Adam silently watched Morwen’s house, his eyes remained hollow and numb, he wasn’t moved by the little girl’s warmth, he simply didn’t want to see Noel kill a kind-hearted person.
Whenever night fell, Adam transformed into a hunter of the dark, he wove silently through forest paths, catching wild game from traps, or carried clean water from a mountain spring far away and left it at Morwen’s doorstep, he did this with the utmost caution, leaving not a single trace, he wasn’t worried about Noel discovering him, he didn’t want the little girl’s family to discover him, he didn’t want their gratitude, nor did he want them to harbor any positive feelings toward him.
Noel’s fury, however, was like a spreading prairie fire, he couldn’t accept his authority being challenged in this tiny village, much less tolerate someone opposing him so blatantly, finally, after a bout of exasperated rage, he decided to take extreme measures, pointing the spearhead directly at Morwen’s family, using their lives as bait to force the mysterious mastermind to show themselves.
"Hmph, I’d like to see whose life is tougher, or whose methods are more ruthless," Noel smiled coldly as he issued orders.
Very quickly, the area around Morwen’s house was swarming with informants, twenty-four hours a day, someone was watching, not even an ant could get through.
At the same time, Noel publicly announced that Morwen’s family owed him five hundred taels of silver, if the secret helper didn’t appear, he would throw her entire family into prison, everyone knew that with the Gavel family’s influence, once they entered prison, there was no possibility of ever coming out.
The entire village was shrouded in an oppressive atmosphere, no one dared to approach, terrified of drawing fire onto themselves.
Morwen’s parents were fraught with anxiety, they knew Noel was not joking, as for the debt, they naturally couldn’t owe that much, it was just some grain seeds, but the Gavel family possessed massive wealth and power, if they said it was owed, then it was owed, they were completely helpless.
Morwen was even more worried, she didn’t understand why so much misfortune was descending upon their family, but she knew all of this was related to her protecting Adam that day.
Just as her family sank into despair, Adam appeared.
Carrying the wild chicken and clear spring water, he walked slowly right in front of everyone.
The guards instantly surrounded him, Adam gently set down the chicken and water, his movements carried an unquestionable composure, his gaze lingering on no one, as if the surrounding clamor had nothing to do with him, he was merely here to complete a simple yet resolute task.
"Step aside," his voice was deep and powerful, those two words carried an irresistible majesty, the guards exchanged glances, and no one dared step forward, Adam’s aura made even Noel’s handpicked guards feel a spontaneous dread.
"You, are you the one who has repeatedly provoked Young Master Noel?" The lead guard held his spear out, voice carrying a quiver, Adam tilted his head slightly, his icy gaze sweeping over the weapon as if capable of freezing it solid.
"I did not provoke anyone, I merely did what needed to be done."
His reply was concise, his tone holding not the slightest emotional fluctuation, yet it made people feel a force that could not be ignored.
Standing not far away, Noel witnessed all of this, a cold sneer hooking the corners of his mouth, he hadn’t expected the mysterious mastermind was actually that idiot.
"Hmph, what audacity, do you think you can contend with the Gavel family with your strength alone?" He stepped forward, voice brimming with arrogance.
"Today, if you don’t surrender, Morwen’s family and you will all pay the price."
Adam’s gaze finally turned to Noel, there was no anger in those eyes, nor fear, only a profound hollowness, as if capable of seeing through to the deepest darkness of the human heart, he spoke softly, yet the words transmitted clearly into everyone’s ears.
"Young Master Noel, your so-called authority is nothing but a false bubble built upon the oppression of the weak, stop me if you have the ability."
"Is that so? What the hell are you? Stop you? Hahaha..." Noel laughed as if he had heard the biggest joke in the world.
"In this village, I am justice, the words you say are completely worthless to me."
Adam said nothing more, he shook his head gently, as if sighing at Noel’s ignorance, then turned as if to leave, every step appeared firm and composed, as if he had already seen through all the impending storms.
"Halt," Noel shouted angrily, waving his hand to signal the guards forward.
However, right at that instant, a bizarre power emanated from Adam’s body, it was an indescribable sense of oppression that made everyone present feel their hearts tighten, although the guards were well-trained, in the face of this power they involuntarily stopped in their tracks, they discovered in terror that they were actually unable to move an inch, as if bound by invisible shackles.
