Chapter 233: 233
The twin diesel propellers didn’t lose their heavy, thumping rhythm for three hours after they cleared the twelve-mile reef. Outside the narrow porthole glass, the water changed completely.
The oily, purplish tint of the central district’s drainage runoff faded out, replaced by a deep, ink-black ocean color that rose and fell in massive, slow swells. The gray mist out here was clean, tasting entirely of raw salt mudflats and the cold wind coming off the outer shelves where the Ministry’s electronic turnstiles had never been installed.
Down in the narrow crew quarters, the air remained thick and suffocatingly close. The copper boiler line tracking across the floorboards let out a low, wet hiss, keeping the cedar lockers warm to the touch.
Jun-ho sat flat against the storage box, his massive rubber boots caked in grey volcanic mud. He had laid the stone-gray panels of the Ashen Monarch Core Plate against the timber wall. His plain gray undershirt was damp, the thin cotton fabric sticking tightly to his shoulders and exposing the dense, iron-hard lines of his frame, which had settled into an absolute physical presence after his breakthrough to Level 35.
Right at the lower corner of his eye, the solid black status text box opened across his vision, perfectly silent.
[ Level: 35 ]
[Mana: 2700/8500]
[ Active Trait: Ashen Domain (Phase 4 – 70-meter radius)]
[ Framework: Speed Multiplied 1,000x]
He kept his fingers loosely wrapped around the new matte-black hemp wrap of The Ash Remnant, his eyes fixed on the small oil lamp swinging from the central rafter. With his speed stat fully multiplied by the ledger’s catalyst, his perception of the boat’s motion was so sharp that he could hear the individual drops of salt water hitting the oak hull planks three meters away.
Rea sat right at his left elbow, the high-slashed silk of her black tunic parting all the way to her upper thigh to show the long, smooth line of her leg against his jeans. Her golden-blue eyes spun slowly in the dim light, her full crimson lips curved into a lazy smile as she leaned her entire weight flat against his shoulder guard. Her wild orchid perfume was heavy, cutting straight through the close, grease-stained air of the cabin as her fingers traced a slow line down his bare arm.
"The tracking lines are completely blind out here, big guy," Rea whispered, her voice dropping into a smooth, sultry purr against his ear. Her warm thigh pressed firmly against his denim trousers, her breath hitting his neck in soft, rhythmic puffs. "The Sun God office can print forty-million-won bounties until their terminals run out of ink, but they don’t have a single registration turnstile past the reef marker. The only thing that runs the logic down here is the independent broker keys."
Lilith let out a low, dangerous growl through her teeth, her crimson eyes flaring with a dark fire as her voluptuous hips leaned even harder into Jun-ho’s right side, her large chest pressing flat against his ribs to mark her territory. Her long, ink-black hair fell across his shoulder line in heavy waves, the tight crimson leather of her outfit straining against her rounded fullness as her lips parted into a breathless murmur right against his neck.
"The water girl talks too much about the keys," Lilith whispered, her voice a smooth, velvety register that trembled with a sudden, fierce devotion. Her long fingers, tipped with sharp crimson nails, caught the wet hem of his gray shirt, pulling his torso an inch closer to her shoulder with a teasing, hot friction. "My spirit belongs to your ribs now, Jun-ho. Let her count her columns—I want to watch you clear the unranked black market islands from the inside of my skin. Every single drop of my demon energy is locked to your line."
She was falling for him completely, her primitive demon instincts locked onto his presence with a fierce, submissive passion that made her knees tremble against his boots.
"Move your chest back, demon," Eun-bi’s sharp, furious voice barked from the opposite canvas cot, her fingers tightening around her silver trauma scissors with an intense, biting jealousy.
She walked two long steps across the narrow aisle, jamming her heavy rubber boot directly between Lilith’s leather trousers and the side of Jun-ho’s jeans. Her bare thigh pressed hard against his shins for stability as the boat hit a larger swell, her eyes locking straight onto his face. "The database log is still running the core synchronization, Jun-ho. If you let this rogue broker crowd the narrow track with her hair and her incense, the system will trace the mana displacement before we can even clear the drainage outlet. The registry belongs to the collective detail, not her private bedroom."
Jun-ho didn’t pull back an inch from any of them. He reached out his bare right hand, his fingers closing around Rea’s narrow waist under the loose silk fabric of her tunic, while his left shoulder remained pinned against the hot, firm line of Lilith’s leather top. The dual friction made the suppressed lake behind his ribs pulse in a deep, slow rhythm that filled the entire dark hold with a silent, heavy weight.
"The registry is clear," Jun-ho said flatly.
Before Eun-bi could answer, a loud, heavy THUMP echoed from the open deck plates above their heads. The single-cylinder diesel engine let out a final, coughing pop and went completely quiet, the boat losing its forward speed and drifting slowly in the silt.
Tae-woo’s heavy iron hand threw the deck hatch open, his broken nose twitching as he looked down into the hold. "We’ve hit the perimeter of the Black Slipway Market, boss! But the secondary lane is completely blocked. A rogue legacy guild cruiser—the Iron Whale—is sitting broadside across the main channel mouth! They’ve dropped a heavy three-layer steel chain net to seal the reef exit!"
Jun-ho stood up from his cedar chest, his large rubber boots making a quiet, firm thud on the floorboards as he buckled the stone-gray slabs of his armor back over his chest. His fingers closed around the rough black hemp wrap of his sword, his face perfectly calm under his hood. "Let’s go up."
They climbed through the low deck hatch onto the open stern deck. The air outside was freezing, the grey ocean mist rolling over the rail in thick, wet sheets that smelled of old brine and central city chemical runoff.
Ahead of the bow, the massive silver hull of the guild cruiser loomed through the fog, its high-power halogen searchlights pinning the lugger in two long, bright lanes of blinding white light. Standing on the bow rail were forty heavy enforcers in thick, polished grey steel plates, their short crossbows primed with glowing blue tracking arrows.
"Target identified!" the lead enforcer shouted through his visor, his hand already releasing his string. "Rogue Vanguard, Kang Jun-ho! Drop the black bar and get on the deck!"
Jun-ho took two long steps forward, his rubber boots sliding smoothly over the wet wood planks of the bow. He raised The Ash Remnant with his left hand, let the lake of cold mana behind his ribs break its banks completely, the Ashen Domain - Phase 4 expanding outward in a flat, seventy-meter ring of thick grey frost.
[Ashen Domain Phase 4 Active.]
[Perimeter State: 70 meters (Extended by the Monarch’s Torc).]
[Mana Cost: 500 per minute. Current Mana: 2200/8500.]
The air inside the seventy-meter circle dropped forty degrees in a microsecond, the wet salt spray on the concrete instantly turning into a thick sheet of white ice. The world inside the perimeter slowed down until the forty blue tracking arrows fired by the enforcers looked like lazy grey flies floating through the drizzle.
Jun-ho didn’t use a shield, and he didn’t use his back. He simply snapped his left wrist, driving the sharp matte edge of the five-thousand-fold blade straight down onto the timber rail beneath his feet.
The sound wasn’t a standard blast; it was a localized earthquake that shattered the massive steel chain net into thousands of tiny iron shards. The force of the strike, multiplied five thousand times by the weapon’s bound trait, didn’t just clear the front line; the shockwave tore all forty corporate enforcers off their feet, throwing their grey steel bodies backward through the heavy warehouse walls in a single, massive wave of shattered masonry.

The gray notification boxes piled up across his vision in clean lines before vanishing, leaving only the ink-black text of his new level waiting on his screen. Jun-ho lowered his sword, his fingers uncurling from the rough hemp grip as the frost around his boots began to melt back into regular oil brine. He turned his head slowly, looking back at Rea, Eun-bi, and Lilith who were walking right behind his shoulders, their heavy canvas bags slung tight as they headed toward the central district main vault line.
