Chapter 258 : 3rd OTP, Purple Rush (3)
3rd OTP, Purple Rush (3)
Meanwhile, in a small village.
With a creaking sound, a man exited the Sheriff's Office. His grimace wasn't just because of the scorching sunlight.
"Ha, really, there's nothing left for me."
He complained as he returned to the people waiting for him.
"Oh, you're back."
"Wasn't the bounty $50?"
The man clicked his tongue briefly and handed out bills.
"It was $50, but after deducting the cost of medicine used to catch those gang members, it's maybe $5? That's about all that's left."
"Ah, right."
"That's tight. I don't even know if Purple can see this."
At those words, the tournament team members all nodded in agreement.
"I just got word, Purple finished another outlaw mission. This time, he attacked a prison wagon."
One person quietly watching said this. He was a participant engaging in so-called 'stream sniping.'
Upon hearing this, everyone gestured in the air.
[Asset Value Rankings]
[1. Purple – $834.8]
[2. Mason – $478.5]
[3. Philip – $356.1]
[...]
Purple was still in 1st place for asset value.
"Wow, when did he get over $800?"
"$800... that's like over a million won, right?"
"This OTP prize money is going to be historic at this rate."
They smiled, then sighed again.
"But the gap with the other top ranks is pretty big too."
"If I'd known, I would've gone for outlaw missions from the start."
"Seriously. That's where the real money is..."
Looking at the rankings really made them reflect on their own situation.
Unlike in the beginning, most participants now realized how much more profitable outlaw missions were, so everyone was competing to clear them.
"Still, there are more dropouts now."
"Since it's a random draw, the skill gap is bigger."
"We're about to fall below 100 participants, aren't we?"
The number of participants was steadily decreasing. The less skilled contestants had died during the early missions.
"Now that the bottom has disappeared, it feels like we're sinking..."
"Come on, we're at least in the middle ranks."
"Honestly, more like the lower-middle ranks?"
These people were ranked around 70th to 80th place. The group leader, who had gone to the bounty office and had the highest rank among them, spoke.
"As time goes on, the gap can only widen. At this rate, we have no hope. I feel like we'll just end up doing side missions and disappear."
"That's true. We might not even get to see Purple before it's over..."
"But we have no other options, right?"
"Do you have some kind of gamble in mind?"
The leader stroked his jaw for a moment, then spoke up.
"If we pool all our cash right now, how much do we have?"
"Uh..."
"Wait a minute."
They took out their cash and pooled it together. After estimating the total, the leader's eyes widened.
"We have at least $600."
"Oh, then how about we pool it all to buy one person some good gear?"
"Oh! If we buy a sniper rifle and modify it, we might stand a chance."
To this, the leader shook his head.
"Even if it was anyone else, against Purple there's no hope in a 1:1. Even with just a pistol, he always pulls something off."
"Yeah, that's Purple for you. That's why we formed a team, too."
"So, should we recruit more people?"
"That would be good, too."
As the stream sniper was about to agree, the leader clapped his hands.
"Recruit! That's it!"
Surprised by his sudden change in attitude, people looked puzzled as he continued.
"To be blunt, even if all of us jump Purple, it'd be tough. We're not exactly skilled, are we?"
"Wow, way to drop hard facts."
"Well, gotta admit what's true."
"The point is, we need more people, more skilled people."
"But then, we'd just be absorbed by another team, right?"
Everyone understood it as a suggestion to join higher-ranked teams. But he had something else in mind.
"No, I'm not talking about teaming up with other participants."
He smiled and stretched out his hand.
Everyone turned to where he was pointing.
"We're going to hire a detective with this money!"
Right there was the Preston Detective Agency.
"Oh?"
"Wow, that's a clever idea."
"Right? If we make a request to the Agency, a bounty is issued for Purple, which essentially increases the prize pool. We expand our winnings using NPCs."
The leader's voice rose in excitement at the others' approval.
"If we use the $600 we've gathered to hire a detective and attack together, don't you think there's a chance?"
"At least our odds are better than going alone."
"I'm in!"
Consensus was reached quickly.

Lee Gyeongbok returned to the gang's encampment to receive his reward after completing the mission.
"Your brother is safe."
The mission was to hijack a prisoner transfer carriage and rescue the gang boss's younger brother.
He completed the mission as flawlessly as always.
"Really? Then, where's my brother?"
But the rescued target wasn't with him. To the boss's question, Lee Gyeongbok shrugged.
"Your brother asked me to tell you this: Rather than die in vain, he'll just quit and live a normal life. He's not coming back, so don't look for him."
– Seriously lol, the way he says it with a runny nose
– Ah, honestly, this is the normal reaction
– Real talk, coming to his senses puts him in the top 1% LOL
– Wait, top 1%?
– Sensei, a sane person doesn't even consider becoming a criminal
– That's a fact
Lee Gyeongbok finished speaking and handed the boss the bandana from his brother.
It was a symbol of being a member of the gang.
"You don't know a damn thing, and you haven't even got the guts. Cowardly bastard."
The boss grimaced, spat on the ground, then took the bandana. He let out a deep sigh and spoke.
"In any case, it's not your fault my brother turned out a wimp."
The boss handed over a wad of dollars and lit a cigar.
"You've got both guts and skill. Didn't you say you don't belong anywhere yet? How about joining us? You could make even more money."
It wasn't Lee Gyeongbok who was pleased by the boss's proposal—it was the viewers.
– As expected, if you're competent, you're recognized anywhere
– LOL, herbert also tried to recruit him as a Federal Marshal
– Lawful or outlaw, he's scouted either way, lol
– Ahaha, who can resist a perfect-outlaw?
Lee Gyeongbok shook his head.
"I'm curious about gangster life, but right now I prefer being alone."
– But he refuses!
– ???: It's not even for the boss's seat, so why should I?
– ???: Just did a job for you and you look down on me? Are you kidding?
– ???: Do I look like someone who'll become king?
– Ahaha, we can see all his real thoughts!
– Honestly, for someone like Godple, even offering the boss's chair wouldn't be enough
Smiling at the viewers' teasing, Lee Gyeongbok saw the boss click his tongue in regret.
"I see. Well, can't force you. Keep this bandana instead."
"The bandana?"
"You handled it alone, without bringing my men. If you'd brought them, some would have gotten hurt or killed. I always pay back favors and grudges properly. If you ever need help, I'll help you once."
– Oh? Is this like a bonus reward?
– ???: Honestly, being alone is just easier
– Ahaha, your men would just get in the way, Lol
– Solo play? Even better!
– This is why hyung always goes for the hardest stuff!
There was no reason to refuse.
Lee Gyeongbok pocketed the bandana and turned away.
"So, not all outlaws are without loyalty, it seems."
Messages of agreement flooded the chat. Lee Gyeongbok glanced at his minimap and kept speaking.
"There's a new icon at the camp. Looks like gang-only features are unlocked, but they're just made available to me anyway."
– Wow, Max favorability in one shot
– If you get a recruitment offer, you're set LOL
– Maybe the outlaw life isn't so bad?
Among them, Lee Gyeongbok looked for the fence.
"I've got something I want to sell."
He pulled out loot he'd gathered during the mission—the guns he'd taken from the Sheriffs guarding the prisoner.
Because of Qdari's quest, he could only use a pistol, so he'd saved these to sell.
"Ah, I can't buy any more."
"You can't?"
"I'm out of spare cash. Can you wait until I get rid of this stuff and come back?"
The fence shook his hand dismissively.
He couldn't buy any more without unlimited funds.
"They're in good shape. Why don't you use them yourself? If you're worried about the engraving, I can erase it."
"Can you also customize them?"
"Of course. If you can't shoot, at least know how to handle guns if you want to survive."
Lee Gyeongbok rolled his eyes for a moment, then a grin appeared.
"Is this possible, by any chance?"
Listening to Lee Gyeongbok's description, the fence's eyes widened.
"It's possible... but, why would you?"
This reaction made the viewers burst out laughing.
– The fence is flustered, lol
– Wait, can you really do this?
– Isn't this against the rules?
– Not technically, ha
– The freedom in this game is godlike
– True broadcasting genius
– This is real perfect-customization, Lol
* * *
After finishing his preparations, Lee Gyeongbok left the gang camp. He drove his horse skillfully and opened the minimap.
"Oh? The mission unlocked!"
A mission that had been locked with a padlock was now open. He checked his asset value ranking.
[1. Purple – $1,479.1]
Seeing the sudden spike in asset value, Lee Gyeongbok's eyes widened.
– ???
– What? When did he get over $1,000?
– He gained $600 while we weren't looking?!
– Did he get extra bounty for sparing the Sheriffs?
– Even so, that's a huge jump?
– Wow, the prize is probably insane now
– That's almost 2 million won, right?
– Now the bounty hunters are really going to show up LOL
Viewers were shocked, and Lee Gyeongbok smiled.
"Either way, this is great. Means a hard mission has opened up, right? I'll head over right away."
His nonchalance was met with viewers' laughter.
– Of course, always going for hard mode
– Only hyung makes things harder for himself lol
– If this happened to any average person, they'd think it was a bug
– At this rate, the developers need to create a Godple-only difficulty
Whipping his horse, Lee Gyeongbok checked the new mission.
"This really does look hard. See that? 'Gang Recruitment Recommended' is marked."
– So not meant for solo play?
– Do you need to do it as a party?
– Then can Godple even do it?
– Go back and join the gang?
– It's just recommended, not required, Lol
– Yeah, if it required joining, then that would be Matjji
– If you can't play without friends, that's discrimination!
– Stop hating on loners ㅠㅠ
Lee Gyeongbok nodded at the chat.
"It's just recommended, so I think I can go alone. For now, let's..."
Before he could finish speaking, his divine energy detected a rapidly intensifying threat. Time seemed to slow, as if it had stopped.
'A sniper?'
He spotted a spiraling bullet flying toward him.
Judging by the trajectory, it had been fired from a hill rising beyond the shallow river bank.
Recognition and movement came instantly. As he yanked the reins, time resumed its normal flow.
The next moment, dirt erupted right in front of him with a gunshot.
"Damn."
Though Lee Gyeongbok was calm, his horse wasn't. Panicked, the horse reared.
Thankfully, he'd anticipated this and leaped off, landing lightly instead of being thrown.
– ???????
– What the hell?
– What just happened!?
– Where was he shot from!?
– An encounter? A robber?
– That landing, though, Lol
The chat was a flurry of shock and admiration. Meanwhile, Lee Gyeongbok quickly took cover behind a rock.
"I don't think it's a robber. The shooter's pretty good. Looks like some participants are here."
As Lee Gyeongbok replied, a voice called down from the hill.
"We are agents of the Preston Detective Agency! Purple, surrender peacefully!"
At the word 'detective,' both Lee Gyeongbok and the viewers' eyes widened.
– Detective?
– Wait, did they really hire a detective?
– LOL, they actually used their brains for once
– Honestly, nPCs probably shoot better than most people
– And you don't even have to split the prize money!
– But the opponent is Godple, right? No way they'll get the prize
– Oh, foolish masses, why do you dream in vain
Smiling at viewers' reactions, Lee Gyeongbok peeked up at the hill—and his eyes widened again.
"Huh? That's Saul?"
The detective shouting as the representative was Saul, the class 1 agent from single-player mode.
– Saul? Saul, you say?
– Saul, how dare you use a genome kick!?
– Dude's just doing his job, why get so mad at Saul? LOL
– Ah, right, godple's an outlaw right now
– Saul's never even met him in this timeline, and still gets blamed LOL
Meanwhile, another voice from above shouted.
"He only uses pistols! Never let him get close! Keep sniping from a distance!"
The voice belonged to a bounty hunter—one of the tournament participants, apparently the detective's employer.
"So that's why they're all equipped with sniper rifles."
Realizing the situation, Lee Gyeongbok laughed, drew his pistol, and aimed for the hill.
With a shot, a scream rang out from above.
"Aaagh!"
"What? What was that!?"
"Get down!"
The alarmed detectives ducked and took care of their wounded. Then Saul shouted, voice tense.
"What is the meaning of this?! He only uses pistols!?"
"W-wait a minute!"
The hunter leader, flustered, borrowed Saul's rifle and aimed the scope at the rock where Lee Gyeongbok was hiding.
'Did he give up on the quest?'
It was out of pistol range. As he zoomed in, the secret was revealed.
"What the heck is that?"
What Lee Gyeongbok held defied description. It was a pistol, but the barrel was as long as a rifle's.
One possibility came to mind.
"Did he... modify a pistol like that?"
While he muttered in disbelief, the barrel in the scope trained on him.
The instant he realized it—
With a bang, the scope shattered, and the hunter leader collapsed.
"W-what!?"
"What the hell happened!?"
Suddenly panicking at their leader's death, the participants looked around in confusion. Lee Gyeongbok was pleased by the resulting commotion.
Just then, a message popped up in front of him.
[HOST〉 Wait;;; Isn't this cheating?!]
[HOST〉 How is this a pistol!]
It was a message from Qdari, the server host. Lee Gyeongbok shrugged behind the rock.
"You're the host, you should know best. You can see the item info, right?"
He'd attached a rifle barrel, cut from a Sheriff's rifle, to improve range—but the game still labeled it a pistol in the item description.
– LOL, if you shoot one-handed it's a pistol!
– It's a modified pistol, obviously!
– HOXY, are you salty?
– Should've written the quest condition better, Lol
– Honestly, if it was DuelGuhn, the conditions would have been airtight
– Dude, at this point, even their legal arguments are airtight!
– It's using the game's features! What's the problem? LOL
Viewers were even more entertained by Qdari's response.
[HOST〉 Wow, Lol—I never even imagined such a hack modification...]
[HOST〉 Zme mne bveund^^]
The laughter in the chat only grew.
– I'm learning so much from this, Lol
– He's smiling but biting his lip, right?
– It's not a hack, it's perfect-custom, thank you very much
– Only Godple can pull this off, the gun balance is absurd now, Lol
– For real, how did he even hit with that?
– (Kemalcon)(Kemalcon)(Kemalcon)
– ???: But it works, doesn't it?
– That's why Qdari is even more pissed, hahaha
Looking at the joyous chat, Lee Gyeongbok smiled too.
"They're taken care of on that side, so let's wrap things up here as well."
He wasn't the hunted—he was the hunter.
