Chapter 962: One Stable House Drops Another

Ravel Two showed its low ledge on the third crossing bell. Holl counted two lamps where the house crews needed three.

House Twelve had lost its floor signal.

He locked both shortened fingers outside the brake teeth and brought Ty’s cradle to the roadback skin. Ravel Two passed below them with its houses bolted along a gray hide ridge. Each roof faced the migration roadback now. By the next bell, every front door would become a floor.

Todd clipped Parel’s copied strip to the forward rope. The copper groove pointed toward the dark house between the two working lamps.

Jade took the rear line. Nessa stood beside her with an empty chain loop around the wrist where the field finger usually hung. Vessa had kept the plated joint inside livestock escrow. Nessa had crossed half the roadback without looking back at the animal deck.

"Right hand takes yellow. The rest stays inside."

Ty closed four fingers around the line.

"I have four useful fingers and a strong dislike of open crossings."

"Use the fingers. Leave opinions off my brake."

Holl released one brake tooth.

The cradle slid from the migration roadback as Ravel Two rose beneath it. Todd followed on the guide rope. Jade and Nessa shared the rear sling, turning hip against hip whenever their bodies chose different surfaces.

House Twelve struck the direction change before they landed.

Its outer wall became the low ledge floor. Door hinges locked. Roof latches caught. Inside the nearest window, a cooking table kept rising toward the old down and tore two bolts from the new wall.

A man in a waist harness pushed three children beneath a stair net. The net followed the table. Its upper hooks peeled out one by one.

"Ty, catch that net with chain and keep your left shoulder unloaded."

Ty passed an unmarked jaw link through the yellow rope and threw the hook across the window frame. Two loose ribs followed the chain, caught the lower mesh, and held while his wrapped arm stayed against the cradle slats.

The table hit the ceiling boards. Pots broke through its top and continued toward the roof.

Holl braked the cradle against House Twelve’s outer ring. His shortened fingers slipped on the wet leather once, found the guard, and set the tooth.

"Todd, take your source mark below the window and call every turn."

Todd crawled along the hide ridge with the copper strip against his palm. Flour lifted from the punched groove and settled into a seam under the house.

The seam pulled it inward.

Jade climbed after him. Her cold right arm stayed hooked through the rear sling while her left hand followed the house rail.

"A living road enters beneath the floor line and leaves through Parel’s heel."

The man inside House Twelve heard her through the broken window.

"Lenn Cor maintains our foundation crawl. She checked in before this turn, counted four good wall hooks, and complained about the west tube."

"Can Lenn reach a speaking tube from beneath that floor?"

"The tube started carrying somebody else’s breathing after our lamp failed."

Another stair hook tore free.

Ty drew the chain toward the cradle. The net stopped above the children, but the load bent his right wrist against the yellow rope. Green pressure remained around the old hand position before catching up to the bones.

Holl saw it and moved the brake one tooth toward the house.

"Keep your wrist straight, because your soul is arriving late again."

"That is rude of it, but the wrist heard you."

The house crew pushed the children through the window one at a time. Nessa caught the first around the waist with her left arm. Her caged right arm reached for the next child before the body turned, pulling the shoulder across her chest.

Jade corrected Nessa’s belt angle. Holl kept the cradle level enough for both.

Todd struck the foundation seam with his shortened staff.

"Parel’s punches enter this seam. The second rope shares the junction, crosses your brake housing, and carries an old throw number under the tar."

Holl passed the brake to Jade and crawled under the window rail.

The foundation hatch had become part of the wall. He opened it with his leather guard rather than putting shortened fingers near the latch. A black cord ran through the crawl and disappeared into a metal block beneath the house.

A gray throw line crossed it.

Tar covered most of the rope. One repair remained clean where two turns passed around the standing part and the bitter end bit backward through both.

Holl had tied that repair before the shift that took his brother.

The rope had arrived late from wash. His brother kicked the wet coil under Holl’s bench and said the brake crew could eat after the splice stopped looking ashamed of itself. Holl tied it while chewing the heel of yesterday’s bread.

That line went over the rail behind the miner’s leg. It took two of Holl’s fingers at the brake and his brother at the waist.

Now somebody had tarred it into House Twelve.

The overboard report listed the rope, the leg, and both workers as unrecovered. Holl’s mother had asked what color the line was because she wanted one thing she could picture reaching him. Gray, Holl told her, with a brass keeper tag and one repair too ugly for any other crew to claim.

The tag scraped his leather guard now.

Holl put the leather guard around the repaired section and pulled.

The line moved six inches. A brass keeper tag came out of the tar with his old throw number still scratched across it.

House Twelve dropped away from the cradle.

The man inside struck the window frame with both shoulders. One child slid under the stair net and caught a loose rung around the neck.

"Whatever you found below us, leave enough of it to hold my children."

Ty gave the yellow rope another chain link. His right wrist twisted. The ribs holding the net separated from his chest by the width of a hand.

"Holl, tell me which load belongs to me before the house moves again."

Holl could pull the tag free. The rope behind it might still carry a buckle, a coat strap, or nothing from the person who had gone over the rail.

The child beneath the net kicked at the new floor.

Holl shoved the repaired line back into the junction.

"Take the stair net only, and leave the house ring to my brake."

He threaded his brother’s throw line through the emergency wheel beneath House Twelve. The repair caught on the first brake tooth, both turns bulging against iron.

Holl used the leather guard and forced the splice through.

Tar stripped from the rope. The bitter end flattened. The repair he had tied disappeared between iron teeth and came out as smoking fiber on the other side.

House Twelve rose back against the cradle ring.

Ty pulled the stair net into the window while the man inside freed the child. Nessa and Jade took the last two children across the rear sling. Todd stayed beside the foundation hatch and kept Parel’s source groove pressed against the black cord.

The next crossing bell rang from Ravel Two.

Holl fed more of the old line into the emergency wheel. Every foot bought House Twelve another few inches of usable wall. The gray rope darkened, split, and wound around the axle where nobody could pull it home.

The brake kicked through Holl’s guard and opened the skin below his shortened fingers. He kept the palm flat against leather. Curling those two stumps invited the line back into the path that had taken them.

The brass keeper tag struck the brake housing. Holl cut it loose with his line knife and put it inside his leather guard.

The tag was all he took.

The black block beneath the house opened four narrow plates. They spread across the foundation seam and held after Holl’s rope burned through.

Nessa touched one plate with the cage around her right wrist.

Her fingers turned toward it before her elbow followed. The plate accepted the crooked pressure and kept House Twelve level without asking the rest of her body to agree.

She leaned closer.

"This amount could brace an outer district through a failed anchor turn."

"It is still drinking from Lenn beneath your hand."

Jade’s damaged eye followed the road into the crawl.

The speaking tube beside the black block clicked. Lenn’s breathing left it. A man’s voice took the same narrow pipe.

"One field piece buys enough plate for West Four’s outer district. Ty’s route record buys the rest."

Nessa kept her empty wrist against the prison metal while the offer waited inside House Twelve.
