Chapter 963: Nessa Prices The Prison Metal
Nessa pressed her empty wrist against the black plate. The metal bent around her pulse cage before her elbow reached it.
House Twelve held level under her palm.
Beneath the floor, Lenn Cor carried enough borrowed down to keep Parel standing on another road. The plate accepted both loads and gave no sign which body hurt more.
Nessa bit the molar control once. A needle inside the cage touched the plate. Two others measured how far her shortened ring finger lagged behind the middle one.
The plate changed its curve to meet both.
West Four had spent five intact pulse cages and Davi’s sixth to move civilians through the brewery tunnels. Its west wall brace had fallen. Thirty brewery evacuees slept in Shelter Ring Two because their orbital transfer left without them.
Four pieces of this metal had just held an occupied house through a failed floor turn.
The speaking tube beside her wrist still carried the man’s offer.
"One field piece buys enough plate for West Four’s outer district. Ty’s route record buys the rest."
Nessa lifted her hand from the plate. Her caged fingers remained curved for its surface until the elbow pulled them back.
"Put Lenn back on the tube before you price anything built from her."
"Lenn’s airway remains clear, while the speaking tube belongs to the active contract."
"Her breathing is evidence, and you replaced it with your sales pitch."
The pipe clicked.
Lenn coughed once below the floor. Air scraped through the tube, paused under weight, and returned in a shorter pull.
The father inside House Twelve leaned through the broken window. His children waited across the rear sling while the family’s water tins and sleeping frames remained bolted inside.
"Does your bargain leave these plates under my house after you depart?"
"I am pricing the metal, because nobody has promised you ownership yet."
He put both hands around the window rail and stayed there. Nessa preferred the anger to gratitude she had not earned.
Holl sat against the emergency wheel with the brass keeper tag inside his bloody leather guard. Todd held Parel’s copied strip beside the foundation seam. Jade kept one hand on Ty’s cradle while the other covered her damaged eye from the plate’s reflection.
The voice returned through Lenn’s breathing.
"Use Vask. Names cost less than plate, and mine survives this transaction."
The name proved nothing. Control could prove enough to keep talking.
"Move the lower plate without changing Lenn’s chest load, and I will believe control before identity."
The plate beneath Nessa’s palm folded one corner into the foundation block. House Twelve stayed against Holl’s wheel. Lenn’s next breath kept the same rough depth.
Nessa checked all three cage needles.
The pressure had moved around Lenn instead of through her.
Vask controlled the hardware. Whatever else the name meant could wait.
"Define enough in pieces, anchors, and load hours. West Four cannot brace a district with a sales word."
"Twelve plate lengths, four root collars, two tram joints, and a transfer comb rated for one failed district turn."
Nessa measured the plate beneath her hand against the cage bars. Twelve lengths could brace the brewery clinic, the west tram switch, and the wall seam Vey had kept under rifle watch. One evacuation fit inside that quote. A permanent outer district required more than Vask’s first offer.
"How many living sources carry those parts through one failed turn?"
"That depends on the sources your city supplies with the field piece."
The offer had changed. West Four was being asked to bring its own Lenn.
"Oltin puts dead Vale tissue on living soldiers and calls the joining survival. My districts perform the same arithmetic at foundation scale."
Nessa opened her right hand as far as the missing smallest finger and shortened ring allowed.
"Our wearers keep names and refusal. Lenn’s buyers were told she was stone."
"Your wearers kept those rights after how many commanders called the armor necessary?"
The question found Iven Rusk in Nessa’s memory, tearing the last gray cords from his own shoulder while he carried Perr out of the stair barricade. His arm survived with supported movement gone.
One clean plate under the brewery clinic could hold Iven’s weapons bench while he worked. Four could brace the west tram lane. Enough around the outer district might let Vey keep defenders unarmored without asking roofs to survive another synchronized failure.
The arithmetic refused to become ugly enough to ignore.
"My smallest finger is gone because I cut contaminated tissue before it reached my wrist. Show me what you cut when Lenn refuses."
Vask left the question inside the tube.
Jade uncovered her damaged eye. A pale line ran from the black plate into the foundation crawl, then split toward the departed waiting deck.
"Measure all of it. I want the useful load recorded beside the body carrying it."
Nessa turned the molar control twice. Three cage needles pressed shallow marks into the plate. The first measured curve. The second carried her delayed finger response. The third recorded how the metal held both without twisting the wrist.
Jade watched the needles.
"Did you already send those measurements through your route home?"
"Meren’s return is dead. I sent survival and stolen Oltin hardware before it closed, nothing from this plate."
"What happens to that record when you find another way back?"
"Vey sees it beside Lenn’s load, Parel’s heel, and this house’s broken bolts. He decides with the same bad price I have."
Ty shifted inside Holl’s cradle. His four right fingers remained around the yellow rope. The wrapped left arm stayed under the slats.
"My route record remains mine. Vask can ask again after Lenn can answer too."
Ty’s refusal left half the offer beyond Nessa’s authority, exactly where it belonged.
The field finger lay beyond her authority too. Vessa’s keeper cup held it against a livestock stake under terms signed by workers whose goats and sleeping decks had taken Ty’s pull. Nessa could see the square opening in memory and the plated joint she had chosen to leave inside it.
The black plates tightened around House Twelve’s foundation seam. Lenn’s breath shortened by one count.
Holl pushed himself upright using the emergency wheel.
"The next turn reaches this house in eleven brake teeth, whether your price is finished or not."
Nessa put her empty wrist back on the plate.
"I inspect one plate severed from Lenn, the source ledger stays open, and Ty answers for his own record. You receive my cage reading from the sample."
"Your field piece enters the demonstration cradle as escrow during inspection."
"My field piece already pays for a roadback your operation damaged. You receive this cage reading or the tube closes."
"The square keeper cup beneath the livestock stake can travel with its plate intact."
Nessa’s thumb pressed hard enough to deepen the cage marks on the black metal.
"Touch that roadback, and this negotiation becomes recovery work with a cutter."
"Then bring no field piece. I can still price what your cage has learned."
Todd pressed the copper Cross Link edge against the speaking pipe.
"The waiting deck carries our source strips, so inspection includes every applicant still aboard."
The plate under Nessa’s wrist softened. One edge passed between two cage bars and touched the living skin below her thumb.
Her arm turned toward it.
Nessa pulled back. The metal kept the shape of her pulse cage, including the empty side where the smallest finger should have answered.
"You measured me before agreeing to the sample terms."
"You touched working plate before asking what it learns from pressure."
Jade moved her living hand toward the edge under Nessa’s cage.
"Release her skin before this becomes another concealed source."
The plate withdrew by the width of a fingernail. It left three shallow pressure cups beneath Nessa’s thumb.
Nessa checked Lenn’s breath, House Twelve’s wheel, and the Cross Link groove before looking toward the opening panels.
"The plates stay until this house clears its water and sleeping frames. Lenn stays audible, and every applicant keeps the source strip matched to their wrist."
"Those terms last through one inspection crossing, while the platform remains under my load."
Holl turned the emergency wheel until House Twelve rested on two local teeth as well as the plates. Todd tucked Parel’s copied strip under the copper clasp instead of offering it to the route.
Across Ravel Two’s low ledge, a row of black panels opened from House Twelve toward the moving lights above. The panels joined into a narrow transfer path.
A platform traveled along it with fixed chairs, carrier boards, and a central stake wrapped in black cloth. Darra held Pio in the first chair. Parel’s blank helm remained strapped near the rear rail. Other applicants stood around the source strips they had matched to their wrists.
With workers lining both edges, dropping the platform would take the people with the hardware.
Vask spoke through the plate beneath Nessa’s hand.
"Inspect the sample and source ledger aboard. Bring no field piece, and the quoted plate leaves with the platform."
Nessa lifted her wrist. The cage needles had finished recording.
The first black panel flexed toward the departing platform. Nessa’s caged arm followed it before her shoulder moved.
