Chapter 961: Fixed Gravity Has A Waiting List

  • Next Chapter

Jade reached the round door as the waiting deck coupled to something that refused to turn.

Lower service rolled onto its left wall behind her. The floor beyond the door stayed under Parel’s carrier board, under thirty one other passengers, and under an intake clerk holding a wooden box of numbered pegs.

Jade put her left boot across the threshold. The step remained hers.

After Rillhold, that felt almost indecent.

The fixed platform extended beyond the deck in three square terraces. Families waited between iron rails with sleeping nets, tool chests, and carrying boards stacked around them. Several had tied direction tags to their children. One boy wore a padded cup around his head because every turn sent his ear toward a different floor.

The woman holding a toddler inside the deck unfastened one side of the chair strap and came toward Jade. A black nail beneath the chair kept its legs planted while the coupling groaned around it.

"You dropped this deck with my son beneath me."

"We caused it. Your son carried the risk."

"Every crew apologizes after missing a bell. Pio still needs three teeth repaired before the next turn."

Her son clung to a wooden spoon. His bare feet hung above the foot bar, both soles unscarred by stake work.

"My name is Jade, and I need to ask what holds his chair."

"Darra Bine. His chair uses licensed foundation retirement."

"Did they tell you whether that foundation still has a living body?"

Darra shifted between Jade and the child.

"They told me Pio could sleep without breaking another tooth."

Parel struck the carrier board with a partly freed hand.

"Mine has a living hand, and I broke two fingers on it."

Heads turned along both benches. The unnamed operator stood at the control rail with one boot and one bandaged foot. He pressed the first numbered socket into its channel.

Parel’s black cord drew tight beneath the deck.

The nail through the left heel sank against the boot sole. Behind the closed service wall, too far away for ordinary sound, Jade’s damaged eye found a living chest contract around the borrowed weight.

"Private foundation workers retain protected identity throughout direction retirement, including each transfer between licensed districts and every dispute opened after installation."

The operator kept his attention on the rail while he spoke.

"Protection could hide a name without hiding that somebody remains alive."

"Applicants purchase stable direction and acknowledge that source management stays with whichever district accepts the load after their originating roadback departs."

Darra looked from Parel’s nail to the gray ribbon around her own wrist. Its lower edge had been cut with the same straight guide.

"My full sheet had another line when I signed it two years ago."

The intake clerk pushed the peg box against his stomach.

"Expired source fields are removed before boarding to protect service workers."

"Then return the removed strip to every person who paid."

Jade stepped farther onto the platform. Her cold right arm swung half a beat late and pulled across the shoulder.

The queue curved around the second terrace and continued behind a wall of sleeping frames.

At the third terrace, a family had brought a door.

Four children lay strapped across it while their parents held the hinges. The smallest child vomited into a cloth and apologized for using the clean side.

Jade looked back at the deck. Darra had one palm on Pio’s head and the other around the chair strap. Parel kept the injured heel raised just enough to make the black cord tremble.

The floor had earned their loyalty before Jade arrived.

A coupling bell struck above the door.

Holl Dask came around the lower service turn with Ty’s cradle on two wall ropes. Todd worked the rear brake using the shortened end of his staff. Ty’s reset left arm lay inside the slats, wrapped below the shoulder. His right hand held the jaw chain clear of the white marked link near his mouth.

"This coupling holds for one bell, and then both floors separate."

The operator drove three more numbered sockets into the rail.

Each click pulled another black cord through the deck. Jade saw a death road tighten beyond the platform, pass through several metal layers, and enter a body under load.

Four cords strained in their sockets while twenty eight empty channels waited under the operator’s hand.

Todd looked past Jade at the cut ribbons.

"Those edges all met the same cutting guide. The removed strips left together."

The clerk moved one boot in front of a square waste bin beneath the peg table.

Ty hooked an unmarked jaw link around the door wheel.

"Choose where my chain takes weight, because Todd needs that bin."

Holl checked the wall ring, the cradle brake, and Ty’s shoulder wrap.

"Wall ring only. Keep that shoulder inside my cradle."

Ty passed the chain through the ring. When the coupling tried to close the door, the pull entered his right wrist, crossed the cradle bar, and left through Holl’s wall rope. His handless arm stayed against the slats.

The roadback rolled another quarter turn. Holl’s shortened fingers worked the brake one tooth at a time.

"If that platform load enters your shoulder, I cut the chain myself."

"Cut it once Todd has the ribbon bin. Jade can argue with me afterward."

"Jade asked for sources, and names belong to whoever carries them."

Ty adjusted the jaw link under Holl’s hand.

Todd crossed the threshold on his copper edge. One foot stayed on lower service while the other found the fixed platform. His hips tried to follow both.

Jade caught his belt with her left hand.

The operator kicked the waste bin toward the open side of the coupling.

Jade’s cold right hand closed after the handle passed. She dropped onto one knee and trapped a corner beneath her boot. The bin turned, pulling her ankle toward the fixed platform while the rest of her followed the roadback wall.

Darra threw Pio’s spare chair strap around the handle.

"I am keeping my place, but I want the line they removed."

Together they held the bin between two directions. Todd opened its lower flap and caught a bundle of narrow gray strips before they slid into the gap.

The clerk reached for them.

Darra planted the chair nail across his sleeve.

"You can protect a worker after I learn whether one exists."

Todd laid the first strip against the copper groove at his belt. Tiny square punches crossed the paper where ordinary ink had been removed. Flour left from the kitchen settled into each hole.

"The source punches survived in the boarding cuts because the printer needs a route for every transfer, even after the clerk removes every readable word."

The operator filled the fifth socket. The waiting deck shifted closer to the fixed platform, and Parel’s carrier straps loosened as stable weight spread through the frame.

Parel looked comfortable. Jade hated the honest relief in his face as much as the damaged hand behind the wall.

"Todd, copy every source before the coupling releases this deck."

"That takes longer than Ty’s shoulder and Holl’s rope can afford."

Jade pulled the whole bundle from the bin and gave half to Darra.

"Put each source strip against its wrist, and keep everyone aboard."

Darra stared at her.

"You expect me to help after your people nearly dropped my child."

"Learn who carries him before you pay again."

Pio pushed the wooden spoon through the chair slats toward his mother. Darra took it, shoved the handle through her ribbon loop, and began matching cut edges.

Other applicants moved closer. The older mason kept one hand on his waist poles while his daughter brought their ribbon. Nobody thanked Jade. Accusations of a fake hand came from two benches. Parel raised the heel until a cry traveled through the black cord.

Darra told Parel to lower it before the unseen worker lost another finger.

The sixth socket entered the rail.

Todd pressed Parel’s strip into the copper groove. The Cross Link edge pulled away from the fixed platform and pointed through the roadback’s outer wall.

Holl saw the punch pattern and stopped moving his brake hand.

"That source mark belongs to Ravel Two’s low ledge houses."

"Can you guide us there before this district completes the transfers?"

"I can reach their crossing, but this deck takes another road."

The final bell warning struck.

Jade could cut Ty’s chain and let the coupling close. Parel would leave. The waiting deck would keep its floor. Todd’s copied groove would keep one living source.

She pulled the unmarked link free of the door wheel herself.

"Keep Parel’s route, and leave the district standing behind us."

Ty drew his right arm into the cradle. Holl released the brake. Todd jumped back across the changing threshold with Parel’s strip pressed under his thumb.

Darra remained aboard with Pio and half the source bundle. She held the strips above her head where the operator could see that every applicant now had a reason to keep one.

The round door closed between Jade and Parel.

Holl clipped Todd’s copper edge to the cradle rope. It pointed through the roadback skin toward a line of moving lights below them.

At the end of Parel’s copied source, Ravel Two’s House Twelve rolled through a direction change. Its walls stopped on time. The sleeping nets and cooking table kept rising with the stolen floor until their bolts tore free.
