Dungeon Corpse Stacker: I Absorb Everything to Become Ominous Monarch
Chapter 159: The Kingpins of the Underground Bow
The rain over the Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat peninsula slowed to a thin, icy drizzle, clinging to the tall palm fronds surrounding the marble fountain of Villa Rothschild.
In the grand courtyard, eighteen black luxury sedans sat idling under the pale yellow glare of the entrance lanterns, their exhaust fumes mixing with the damp coastal air.
Renan stood on the top marble step, his dark woolen coat open, his pale hands resting inside his pockets.
Behind him, Shadow Knight Arthur stood motionless, his gauntleted hand resting against the pommel of his six-foot claymore, his visor reflecting the flickering lantern light.
Don Alvarez walked out from the double mahogany doors, holding his silk umbrella over his head, accompanied by three senior cartel leaders who moved with stiff, terrified steps.
Behind them, supported by two burly guards, Hoffman dragged his feet across the wet marble.
The German cartel boss had wiped the blood from his shattered nose, but his face remained pale as chalk, his hands trembling violently beneath his leather cuffs.
"The cars are prepped for your journey to Paris, Sovereign," Don Alvarez spoke, his gravelly voice calm and respectful as he stopped three paces below Renan on the stairs. "My brokers in Lyons have cleared the highway toll stations. No regional police or guild scouts will interrupt your transport."
Renan did not look at Alvarez. His violet eyes remained fixed on Hoffman.
"Sylas," Renan said softly into the cool night air.
A dark shadow detached itself from the underside of the marble balustrade above, dropping onto the wet stairs without making a sound.
Sylas held a small, silver frequency scanner in his gauntleted hand, its LED screen flashing a steady, low-frequency crimson signal.
"Two minutes ago, while the covenant was being signed inside the dining hall, a shortwave distress pulse was broadcast from this courtyard, Sovereign," Sylas reported, his voice quiet as ash. "The signal bypassed our regional jammer using a Swiss military encryption key. Target recipient: Geneva Intelligence Operations Desk."
Don Alvarez froze, his old grey eyes snapping toward Hoffman with cold, lethal fury.
"Hoffman," Alvarez whispered, his jaw tightening like iron.
Hoffman stumbled backward, his knees giving way as he dropped onto the wet marble steps, his hands raised in frantic, desperate supplication.
"It was automatic!" Hoffman shrieked, his voice cracking against the sound of the rain. "My jacket lining holds an emergency bio-monitor! If my heart rate exceeds one hundred and eighty beats per minute, the pulse triggers automatically to my handlers in Zurich! I didn’t press a button!"
Renan walked down three steps, stopping directly before the kneeling German boss.
The ambient temperature around the marble fountain dropped twenty degrees in a fraction of a second, freezing the puddle water around Hoffman’s leather shoes into jagged rings of black ice.
"You accepted Swiss money to buy your jacket, Hoffman," Renan said, his voice flat, level, and entirely devoid of anger. "And your jacket called Swiss guns to my sea."
"Sovereign! Mercy!" Hoffman whimpered, pressing his forehead against the cold, frozen marble step. "My warehouses in Hamburg store twenty thousand tons of synthetic mana casing! I will hand over the keys! I will surrender my entire family share!"
Renan reached down, his long, pale fingers gently closing around the collar of Hoffman’s coat.
He did not lift the heavy man. He merely applied a fraction of a unit of Sovereign core density through his fingertips.
CRACK!
The thick marble step beneath Hoffman’s knees shattered into fine grey dust.
The German boss gasped as his body stiffened, his eyes bulging as the dark, liquid shadow oozing from Renan’s palm seeped through his coat, through his skin, and directly into his spinal marrow.
"I do not need your keys to open Hamburg, Hoffman," Renan whispered into his ear. "And your family share was forfeited the moment you thought paper notes from Zurich could protect you from the dead."
Renan pulled his hand back.
Hoffman’s body did not fall onto the stairs.
His skin, his silk tie, and his leather shoes dissolved into dark, light-devouring obsidian armor. His frantic screams died instantly, replaced by the deep, rhythmic hum of an extracted construct as twin embers of pale argent twilight ignited within his hollow eye sockets.
[Extraction Complete] [Extracted Unit: Hoffman (Former Cartel Kingpin)] [Unit Class: Tier-A Underground Logistics Commander] [Assigned Duty: Port Operations Specialist, Sector Zero Pier Four]
The newly born shadow construct sank onto its forward knee, its obsidian gauntlet striking the frozen marble step with a loud, metallic clack that echoed across the courtyard.
Don Alvarez and the seventeen remaining cartel leaders backed away three full steps, their faces completely drained of color as they watched a man who had controlled three billion dollars in black-market assets converted into a silent, obedient construct in less than five seconds.
"Hoffman’s replacement in Hamburg will be Jean-Luc," Renan commanded, looking back at Don Alvarez.
"It... it shall be arranged immediately, Sovereign," Alvarez stammered, bowing his head so low his silk umbrella almost touched his shoes.
Renan walked past the kneeling shadow construct, stepping down to the asphalt where the black luxury sedan stood waiting with its rear door open.
He stopped with his hand resting on the open door frame, looking back over his shoulder at the eighteen underworld rulers standing on the wet marble steps.
"The covenant is written in ink, Alvarez," Renan spoke, his voice carrying the absolute, unyielding weight of a monarch establishing an empire. "The penalty for breaking it is written in shadow. Remember that when Geneva offers you another margin."
"We remember, Sovereign!" the seventeen cartel leaders shouted in unison, bowing their torsos parallel to the wet stairs.
Renan stepped into the rear leather seat of the black sedan, closing the door behind him.
Shadow Knight Arthur took the driver’s seat, his heavy frame causing the suspension to groan as he turned the ignition key, bringing the twin-turbo V12 engine to a smooth, quiet purr.
The black sedan pulled out of the courtyard of Villa Rothschild, accelerating north onto the highway leading toward Marseilles and the high-speed rail line to Paris.
Inside the quiet rear cabin, Renan opened his hand, letting a small holographic projection hover above his palm.
The display, fed directly through Sylas’s encrypted relay from Paris, showed a detailed blueprint of the disused limestone catacombs four hundred feet beneath the Place de la Bastille.
Fourteen crimson threat markers were moving in a tight, tactical formation through the subterranean ossuary tunnels, their heat signatures cloaked by high-grade Swiss optical camouflage as they approached the central vault where Sector Zero’s transaction ledgers were stored.
Sylas dropped onto the front passenger seat beside Arthur, his optical visor glowing with sharp, aggressive argent light.
"The fourteen assassins belong to the Black Needle Unit of the Shadow Brokers Guild, Sovereign," Sylas reported, his voice dropping into a quiet, deadly rasp. "Their leader is an S-rank French infiltrator named Commandant Vane. They carry anti-mana thermite charges designed to incinerate the catacomb walls and destroy our hard drives within three minutes of contact."
Renan looked out the tinted side window at the dark French countryside flashing past at one hundred miles an hour.
His violet pupils flared with cold, ruthless anticipation.
"They believe that because they move in the dark, they are invisible, Sylas," Renan said softly, his voice cutting through the hum of the engine.
Sylas adjusted his void daggers inside his sleeves. "Your orders, Sovereign?"
Renan closed his hand, shattering the holographic projection into harmless blue dust particles.
"Tell our shadow guards in the catacombs to lock the iron gates from the outside," Renan commanded, his tone dropping into a whisper that carried the cold finality of an executioner closing a vault door. "Don’t let a single needle leave Paris."
