Dungeon Corpse Stacker: I Absorb Everything to Become Ominous Monarch

Chapter 158: Subjugating the Black-Market Syndicate

  • Next Chapter

The rain swept across the manicured lawns of Villa Rothschild in heavy, blinding sheets, rattling the high leaded glass windows of the grand dining hall.

Outside, perched along the cliffs of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, thirty bodyguards armed with enchanted submachine guns kept watch beneath the swaying palms, their wet coats smelling of salt air and cordite.

Inside the grand dining room, sixteen men and two women sat around a forty-foot mahogany table illuminated by crystal chandeliers.

These were not street thugs or regional gang captains.

They were the absolute rulers of the European underworld: the kingpins of the Corsican Union, the directors of the Neapolitan Camorra, the contraband lords of Hamburg, and the shadow brokers who controlled the illegal mana-ore traffic through the Baltic ports.

At the head of the table sat Don Alvarez, a seventy-year-old Spaniard with silver hair, sharp grey eyes, and a tailored silk suit that hid the surgical scars of three failed assassination attempts.

He raised a crystal glass of aged port wine, his gold signet ring catching the chandelier light as he looked at the empty chair placed at the opposite end of the mahogany table.

"He is late," Alvarez spoke, his voice smooth, gravelly, and carrying decades of unchallenged authority. "The boy from the Pacific thinks that because he blew a hole through a Swiss mountain, the syndicate will dance to his whistle."

Beside him, a heavy-set German cartel boss named Hoffman slammed his fist onto the mahogany wood, rattling the silver cutlery.

"We move thirty percent of the refined mana-ores in Western Europe, Alvarez!" Hoffman growled, wiping foam from his mustache. "Zurich’s reserves are melted, and the market is starving! If this Ominous Monarch wants our trucks, our warehouses, and our customs brokers, he gives us fifty percent of the trade margin. We are not his dockhands."

A low murmur of agreement rippled down the table.

The cartel leaders shifted in their leather chairs, their hands resting near the concealed sidearms beneath their jackets.

The heavy mahogany double doors at the entrance of the dining hall did not open.

They unlocked themselves with two quiet, synchronized clicks, swinging backward on silent brass hinges to admit the evening draft.

Renan walked into the dining hall.

He wore his dark woolen coat buttoned against the coastal dampness, his hands resting casually inside his coat pockets, his leather boots leaving no wet prints on the polished marble floor.

Beside his left shoulder, Shadow Knight Arthur stepped through the doorway, his silver-black pauldrons gleaming beneath the crystal lights, his six-foot claymore held upright in a broad, two-handed rest position.

Behind them, Sylas appeared from the dark ceiling shadows, perching silently atop the marble fireplace mantel like a dark, watchful raven.

The eighteen cartel leaders stiffened in their seats, their chatter dying instantly as the air inside the grand dining room grew cold, dry, and heavy with ozone.

Renan walked down the length of the forty-foot table, his violet eyes sweeping over the eighteen faces with unhurried, analytical precision.

He did not take the empty chair at the foot of the table.

He stopped beside Don Alvarez, resting his pale fingers on the back of the Spaniard’s chair.

"You were discussing margins, Hoffman?" Renan asked softly, his voice calm, level, and carrying a quiet, terrifying resonance that vibrated through the crystal drops of the chandelier above.

Hoffman swallowed hard, his face turning red as he tried to push himself up from his seat. "Sovereign Renan... we are the foundation of European trade. Without our distribution lines, your mana cartridges sit in Marseilles until they rot. We demand a fair—"

Renan did not raise his arm. He did not draw a dagger.

He released three hundred units of Sovereign density directly into the air above Hoffman’s shoulders.

BANG!

The heavy leather chair beneath the German cartel boss shattered into splintered oak.

Hoffman’s two-hundred-and-fifty-pound frame was slammed face-first into the mahogany table, his nose breaking against his own silver plate, his breath escaping his lungs in a ragged, bloody gasp as fifty atmospheres of pure Monarch authority pinned his neck to the wood.

The surrounding cartel leaders leaped to their feet, their chairs scraping violently across the marble floor as five bodyguards drawn from the outer hallway reached for their weapons.

SHING!

Arthur took a single step forward, executing a horizontal sweep of his claymore in mid-air.

The silver dragon-flame did not touch the wooden table or the crystal glasses.

It passed through the five bodyguards’ weapons, reducing their enchanted steel barrels into white-hot liquid metal that dripped onto the floor, searing through their leather boots and sending them screaming to their knees in pain.

Don Alvarez sat completely motionless in his chair, his fingers tight around his wine glass, his silver hair unruffled, but his pale jaw tight as stone.

"Sit down," Renan commanded into the quiet room.

The seventeen remaining cartel leaders did not argue. They sank back into their chairs, their hands trembling on the table surface, their eyes wide with unfiltered, absolute terror.

Renan pulled out the high-backed chair at the head of the table, sitting down opposite Don Alvarez.

Sylas dropped silently from the fireplace mantel, placing a thick, leather-bound document on the mahogany wood, alongside a fountain pen filled with deep violet ink.

"This is the Sovereign Black-Market Covenant," Renan explained, resting his elbows on the table arms. "As of three AM this morning, the Mediterranean Smuggling Corridor operates under my sole jurisdiction. All unrefined ores, all refined mana cartridges, and all secondary alchemical reagents moving between the Pacific and the European ports will pass through our registered nodes."

Don Alvarez slowly set his wine glass down, looking at the violet ink on the parchment.

"And our margin, Sovereign?" Alvarez asked, his gravelly voice dropping into a tense whisper. "We have thousands of men to pay, customs officials to bribe, and warehouses to maintain across four countries."

"Ten percent," Renan replied without hesitation.

Hoffman groaned from the floor, blood trickling down his chin onto the ruined mahogany wood, but he did not dare speak.

"Ten percent is a starvation wage, Sovereign," Alvarez said, his old eyes locking onto Renan’s violet pupils. "Geneva offered twenty-five."

"Geneva offered twenty-five percent in paper notes backed by an empty granite vault in Zurich," Renan noted, his tone flat and unyielding. "I am offering ten percent in physical Tier-S wyrm cores, delivered on time, protected by my shadow vanguard, and immune to the World Council’s seizures."

Renan leaned forward, his violet eyes narrowing into sharp, deadly points of argent light.

"If you sign the covenant, Alvarez, your trucks cross every border on this continent without losing a single crate," Renan whispered into the quiet dining hall. "If you refuse, your warehouses will be cleared by morning, your accounts will be absorbed into Sector Zero, and your territory will be assigned to Jean-Luc."

Jean-Luc, standing quietly in the corner of the room, adjusted his velvet lapels with a thin, sharp smile.

Don Alvarez looked at the broken German boss on the floor, then at the silver dragon-flame humming along Arthur’s claymore, and finally at the dark woolen coat worn by the young monarch sitting before him.

The old Spaniard knew when a empire had fallen, and when a new ruler had claimed the throne.

Alvarez reached out, taking the fountain pen from the table.

He dipped the nib into the violet ink, signing his full legal name at the bottom of the parchment with three firm, unhurried strokes.

"The Mediterranean is yours, Sovereign," Alvarez spoke, sliding the document back across the mahogany table. "The syndicate bows."

One by one, the seventeen remaining cartel leaders stepped forward, taking the pen with trembling hands to affix their signatures beneath Alvarez’s name.

Renan picked up the signed covenant, handing it to Sylas, who dissolved into the ceiling shadows with the document in his coat.

Renan stood up from the mahogany table, buttoning his woolen coat against the evening draft.

"Keep your drivers on schedule, Alvarez," Renan said as he turned toward the grand double doors. "And tell your brokers in Paris to prepare their storage vaults. We have ten thousand more tons coming through Marseilles before the end of the month."

He walked out of the grand dining hall, Shadow Knight Arthur falling into step behind his heels, leaving the eighteen underworld leaders sitting in dead silence as the rain continued to beat against the leaded glass windows.

Yet as Renan reached the grand marble courtyard of Villa Rothschild, where his black transport car sat waiting under the palm trees, Sylas dropped from the upper stone balustrade, holding a encrypted communication disc that was flashing a high-priority red alert cipher.

"Sovereign," Sylas reported, his voice tight with sudden tension. "A emergency dispatch just arrived from our shadow brokers in Paris."

Renan stopped at the car door, his violet eyes narrowing. "Speak, Sylas."

"The Swiss Banking Consortium has hired the Shadow Brokers Guild," Sylas whispered, reading the decoded message. "Fourteen S-rank shadow assassins have just entered Paris. Their target is not Vault Zero, and it is not Sector Zero."

Sylas looked up, his optical visor flaring with cold crimson light. "They are targeting our primary safehouse in the Parisian catacombs, where our complete transaction ledgers are stored."
