Chapter 157: The Mediterranean Smuggling Corridor

  • Next Chapter

The asphalt along the A8 autoroute near Menton curved sharply against the sheer limestone cliffs, offering a panoramic view of the dark Mediterranean Sea three hundred feet below.

At three in the morning, a thick coastal fog rolled off the water, sticking to the windshields of twenty heavy refrigerated trucks grinding east toward the Italian border.

Unlike conventional black-market shipments that traveled under dimmed headlights and forged bills of lading, this convoy moved with crisp, methodical discipline.

Each truck bore a high-gloss, steel-plated emblem bolted to its rear bumper, depicting a stylized dragon skull encircled by four radial spikes, the official seal of the Sovereign Protection Registry.

Inside the trailing command utility van, Jean-Luc adjusted the lapels of his leather trench coat, his manicured fingers trembling slightly as he held an encrypted satellite radio against his ear.

"The Italian border checkpoint at Ventimiglia is two miles ahead, Sovereign," Jean-Luc reported into the radio microphone, his French accent tense and clipped. "My scouts report that the Italian Vanguard Guild has deployed two heavy armored interceptors across the highway lanes. They are backed by ten Tier-A mercenaries carrying anti-vehicle mana cannons."

Renan sat in the passenger seat of the utility van, his dark woolen coat buttoned against the night dampness, his pale hands resting loosely in his lap.

Beside the van, leaping seamlessly from one highway lamp post to the next without making a sound, Sylas moved like a silent shadow against the sea fog.

"The Italian Vanguard Guild receives thirty percent of their annual budget from the Swiss Banking Consortium, Jean-Luc," Renan spoke softly, his violet eyes looking through the fogged windshield at the red taillights of the truck ahead. "They are not guarding a border. They are trying to collect an insurance policy that no longer exists."

Two miles ahead, where the highway spanned a wide concrete viaduct over a deep coastal ravine, two heavy eight-wheel armored personnel carriers sat parked nose-to-nose.

Their heavy blue halogen light bars swept across the empty road, illuminating ten mercenaries wearing dark red tactical armor and holding heavy anti-vehicle rifles loaded with high-explosive mana rounds.

The mercenary commander, a broad-shouldered Italian hunter named Captain Marco, stepped into the center of the lane, raising a glowing red signal baton.

"Halt all vehicles!" Marco’s voice echoed through his helmet loudspeaker, amplified across the concrete viaduct. "By executive decree of the European Guild Council, all commercial transport originating from Marseilles is subject to physical inspection and immediate asset confiscation!"

The lead Volvo tractor-trailer in Jean-Luc’s convoy did not slam on its brakes.

It decelerated with a slow, mechanical sigh, stopping fifteen yards before the armored vehicles.

Captain Marco walked toward the driver’s side cab, his heavy leather combat boots crunching over the salt grit scattered along the road.

He raised his rifle, tapping the iron muzzle against the driver’s side mirror.

"Step out of the cab, driver," Marco commanded, a sneer twisting his lips behind his clear visor. "And unlatch the rear trailer doors. My men are going to clear every crate of uncertified mana cartridges you are hauling."

The French driver did not look frightened. He rolled down his window two inches, pointing a finger toward the steel emblem bolted to the radiator grille.

"The cargo is certified by the Sovereign Authority, monsieur," the driver said calmly. "My instructions are to tell you to look at the seal before you touch the latch."

Marco spat onto the asphalt, pointing his rifle straight at the driver’s forehead.

"Your Sovereign Authority is three thousand miles away across the ocean, old man," Marco barked. "And his seal isn’t worth the scrap iron it was stamped on."

Marco turned back to his squad, waving his hand toward the trailer. "Break the latches! Burn the cargo if they resist!"

Before two mercenaries could reach the rear of the truck, the coastal fog behind the armored personnel carriers condensed into thick, ink-black mist.

The temperature on the viaduct dropped fifteen degrees in a single second.

The high-intensity halogen light bars mounted on the armored vehicles flickered once, twice, and then burst into fine glass powder with twin, synchronized pops.

Silence fell over the bridge, broken only by the low rumble of the idling truck engines and the wind whistling through the ravine below.

"Squad, form a defensive perimeter!" Marco shouted, his tactical instincts flaring as he backed toward the concrete guardrail, his rifle scanning the darkness. "Thermal vision on! Find the intruder!"

The ten mercenaries raised their optical visors, but their thermal displays rendered nothing except solid, pitch-black coldness.

A slender, dark blade forged from void iron extended silently from the shadow of the lead armored vehicle’s rear wheel.

PFT!

The blade pierced the fuel cell of the first personnel carrier with surgical precision.

The compressed mana fluid did not detonate; it was instantly absorbed into a swirling vortex of dark violet energy that expanded across the asphalt like living oil.

From the dark vortex, forty shadow skirmishers rose into the moonlight, their light-devouring obsidian armor making no sound as they stepped onto the viaduct.

Beside them, Shadow Knight Arthur stepped out of the fog, his silver-black pauldrons gleaming under the stars, his six-foot claymore trailing soft ribbons of silver dragon-flame against the concrete.

"You speak of our Sovereign’s authority as if it were a matter of distance, captain," Arthur said, his voice echoing deep within his crested helm. "Our domain begins wherever our shadow falls."

Marco’s face turned white inside his helmet. He raised his heavy rifle, aiming directly at Arthur’s breastplate. "Fire! Tear them apart!"

The ten mercenaries opened fire simultaneously.

A volley of twenty high-explosive mana rounds streaked across the narrow bridge, leaving bright yellow plasma trails in the night air.

Arthur did not raise a shield.

He took one step forward, executing a single, horizontal sweep of his claymore.

A fifty-foot wave of silver dragon-flame erupted from the blade, devouring the incoming plasma rounds in mid-air before sweeping across the front axles of the two armored personnel carriers. The three-inch steel frames and reinforced tires were sliced clean in two, sending the hundred-thousand-dollar war machines crashing onto their bellies in a shower of sparks and hot oil.

Before the mercenaries could reload, Sylas dropped from the upper bridge cables like a falling falcon.

His slender void daggers danced through the air in four precise, rhythmic arcs, severing the firing pins of every rifle on the bridge before the men could pull their triggers a second time.

Within forty seconds, the ten elite hunters of the Italian Vanguard Guild were disarmed, their heavy armor split at the shoulder joints, kneeling in a disciplined circle upon the cold asphalt.

Captain Marco lay flat on his back, his heavy rifle shattered beside his hand, staring up at the dark silhouette of Renan walking out from behind the command van.

Renan wore his dark woolen coat open, his leather boots stepping over the pool of cold oil without leaving a trace.

He stopped two paces from Marco, looking down at the mercenary commander with cool, unhurried violet eyes.

"Who instructed you to block this bridge, captain?" Renan asked softly.

Marco swallowed hard, his breath catching in his chest as the gravimetric pressure of twenty-two thousand three hundred units of core density pressed down upon his ribs.

"The... the Guild Master in Genoa," Marco gasped, blood trickling from his nose onto his collar. "The Swiss Consortium promised us twenty million euros if we intercepted the Marseilles convoy..."

Renan reached into his coat pocket, pulling out a single, vacuum-sealed glass canister containing a high-purity crimson wyrm core harvested from the Zurich vault.

He dropped the canister onto Marco’s chest.

"Take this core to your Guild Master in Genoa," Renan commanded, his voice level, quiet, and absolute. "Tell him that the Mediterranean Smuggling Corridor is open. If his guild wishes to collect a toll, he may send his entire roster to this bridge tomorrow night."

Marco gripped the cold glass canister with shaking hands, nodding frantically as his men dragged themselves backward away from the shadow soldiers.

"Clear the vehicles from the lane," Renan ordered Arthur.

With a single thrust of his boot, Arthur kicked the severed half of the lead armored carrier off the viaduct edge, sending fifty tons of twisted steel plunging three hundred feet into the rocky gorge below with a distant, thunderous crash.

The twenty heavy trucks ignited their diesel engines, moving past the ruined roadblock in a disciplined, unbroken line as they crossed the border into Italy.

Renan stepped back into the passenger seat of the command utility van, closing the heavy door as the vehicle accelerated into the night toward Genoa.

Through the rear window, Sylas and forty shadow skirmishers dissolved into the shadows of the concrete bridge supports, staying embedded along the highway as permanent guard posts for the new trade line.

Jean-Luc wiped sweat from his forehead with a silk handkerchief, taking a deep, ragged breath as he looked at the navigation screen showing clear roads all the way to the Italian ports.

"The road to Genoa is clear, Sovereign," Jean-Luc whispered, his voice filled with newfound, absolute awe.

"The road was clear the moment they drew their weapons, Jean-Luc," Renan answered, his eyes looking out toward the dark horizon where the lights of the Riviera coast flickered in the distance. "Now we go to Riviera to meet the rest of the syndicates."
