Dungeon Corpse Stacker: I Absorb Everything to Become Ominous Monarch
Chapter 160: Ambush at the Parisian Safehouse
The limestone vaults four hundred feet beneath the Place de la Bastille were silent, bone-dry, and smelled of centuries of undisturbed calcium dust and old iron.
Constructed during the late eighteenth century as part of the subterranean drainage network before being abandoned and excised from municipal survey maps, the chamber sat completely disconnected from the public catacombs.
In the center of the thirty-foot vaulted room, powered by a silenced hydrogen fuel cell, four server racks glowed with steady green LED arrays, continually processing and encrypting the transaction ledgers for the Mediterranean Smuggling Corridor.
Fourteen shadows detached themselves from the moisture-slick ceiling arches without making a sound.
Clad in specialized optical-distortion suits lined with sound-dampening velvet and wearing thermal-suppression visors, the fourteen assassins of the Black Needle Unit settled onto the stone floor like dry leaves.
Their leader, Commandant Vane, an S-rank infiltrator who had executed twenty-two off-the-ledger contracts for European intelligence agencies, held a high-frequency tactical display in his gauntleted hand.
Vane signaled his unit with three precise hand gestures.
Four assassins stepped forward, setting magnetic thermite blocks against the cooling chassis of the primary server racks.
Each block contained a specialized magnesium-sol gel designed to burn at three thousand degrees Celsius, capable of slagging solid titanium drives and vaporizing optical storage disks within six seconds of ignition.
Vane looked at his wrist timer. The digital numbers read 04:12 AM.
"Plant the charges," Vane whispered into his throat microphone, his voice muffled by his rebreather. "The Swiss Consortium wants these drives turned into liquid glass before the morning trading session in London. Leave no trace of physical recovery."
Before the lead operative could arm the magnetic detonator, the green LED lights on the server racks flickered once and went dark.
The low hum of the hydrogen fuel cell died instantly, plunging the subterranean chamber into absolute, pitch-black darkness.
"Power cut," an operative reported, his rifle barrel rising toward the vaulted ceiling. "Switching to thermal night-vision."
The fourteen assassins pulled down their optical visors.
Their thermal displays did not show the familiar red and orange heat signatures of the server chassis, nor did they detect the ambient temperature of the limestone walls.
Their screens rendered solid, uniform, zero-degree blue across thirty-six0 degrees of view.
The air temperature inside the vaulted room dropped twenty degrees in less than three seconds.
The thin layer of condensation clinging to the ancient limestone walls froze into delicate, white frost crystals that crackled softly as they expanded over the rock.
A deep, heavy clack echoed from the far end of the entry tunnel, followed by the grinding sound of a two-ton iron security gate dropping into its stone mortar slots, locking the only exit leading back to the municipal sewers.
"The gate is dropped!" a rear guard hissed, pulling an enchanted breaching charge from his tactical belt. "We are sealed in!"
"Arm the thermite and blow the gate!" Vane commanded, his hand dropping to the hilt of his twin void daggers. "Squad, circular defensive grid!"
The fourteen operatives formed a tight, seven-foot perimeter around the central server racks, their silenced submachine guns aimed outward into the dark.
From the dark entrance corridor beyond the iron gate, footsteps approached.
They were slow, unhurried, and struck the cold flagstones with a rhythmic, metallic ring that resonated through the limestone foundations.
Renan walked through the iron bars of the dropped security gate.
He did not bend the two-inch iron rods or shatter the stone frame.
His physical body passed through the solid metal as if the gate were nothing more than a thin veil of gray fog, his dark woolen coat buttoned to his collar, his pale hands resting inside his pockets.
Behind him, Shadow Knight Arthur stepped through the stone wall itself, his silver-black pauldrons humming with the cold, suppressed light of the severed crown relic, his six-foot claymore held across his chest.
Sylas dropped silently from the ceiling arch directly above Vane’s head, hanging upside down by his dark boots, his optical visor glowing with steady, argent light.
"You brought fourteen needles to cut a ledger, Vane," Sylas whispered softly into the commandant’s ear.
Vane did not hesitate.
His S-rank reflexes kicked in instantly as he spun on his heel, driving his right void dagger upward toward Sylas’s throat while his left hand triggered the tactical flash-grenade clipped to his chest harness.
BANG!
A blinding, three-million-candlepower white flare erupted inside the closed vault, accompanied by a twelve-decibel acoustic shockwave designed to shatter human eardrums and disrupt internal mana channels.
The white light did not illuminate the room.
The instant the flash charge detonated, the darkness surrounding Renan surged forward like a living liquid, swallowing the light and the concussive sound wave whole.
The explosive energy was snuffed out before it could expand two feet from Vane’s chest, leaving only the smell of burnt magnesium floating in the freezing air.
Vane’s void dagger did not pierce Sylas’s throat.
Sylas’s gauntleted fingers had closed around Vane’s wrist, applying a slow, hydraulic pressure that cracked the carbon-fiber gauntlet plate and forced the assassin’s fingers to release the weapon.
"Fire! Focus all channels on the target!" Vane screamed into his microphone, his face contorting with pain.
The thirteen remaining Black Needle operatives opened fire.
A storm of three hundred silenced, armor-piercing mana rounds swept across the narrow vault, leaving faint blue trails in the dark as they targeted Renan’s chest and head.
Arthur stepped before Renan.
He did not raise his claymore to parry. He merely planted his gauntleted left hand against the stone floor.
[Skill Activated: Tectonic Barrier - Granite Shielding]
A solid slab of ancient Alpine granite three feet thick erupted from the flagstones, interlocking before Renan like an impenetrable wall.
The three hundred armor-piercing rounds slammed into the stone with dull, metallic thuds, their hardened steel tips flattening against the rock before falling uselessly into the dust.
Before the assassins could insert fresh magazines, the shadows beneath their boots came alive.
Thirteen dark, fluid threads erupted from the floor, wrapping around the operatives’ ankles and pulling them down into the stone up to their knees.
The black shadow-sludge did not merely trap their boots; it climbed up their legs, freezing their tactical suits and draining their physical strength into the floor.
Renan walked around the granite shield, stopping two paces from Commandant Vane, who was held pinned to the stone by Sylas’s grip.
Renan reached out, his pale fingers picking up one of the magnetic thermite charges from the top server chassis.
He held the three-pound block over his palm, examining the digital timer set to count down from sixty seconds.
"The Swiss Banking Consortium pays well for fire, Commandant Vane," Renan spoke, his voice calm, level, and carrying a quiet, terrifying resonance that vibrated through the stone vault.
Vane spat a mixture of blood and frost onto the floor, his eyes wide with desperate rage.
"You think you can hold Paris, scavenger?" Vane spat, his teeth clicking together from the cold. "The World Council knows you are here! If my team does not check in by five AM, three strike wings of French S-rank hunters will collapse these catacombs over your head!"
Renan gently closed his fingers around the magnesium block.
CRUNCH!
The three-pound block of high-grade military explosive, wrapped in reinforced titanium casing, was crushed into fine gray dust that dripped through Renan’s fingers like dry sand.
The digital timer shattered, its crimson display winking out permanently.
"The French strike wings will not come to these catacombs, Vane," Renan said softly, his violet eyes locking onto the commandant’s pupils. "Because to the Council, your team has already completed its mission."
Renan raised his bare right hand, extending his palm toward the thirteen trapped assassins struggling against the shadow-sludge.
[Skill Activated: Mass Abyssal Extraction] [Target: 14 Elite Infiltrators (Black Needle Unit)] [Consolidation Protocol: Tier-4 Monarch Authority]
"Arise," Renan decreed.
The thirteen operatives did not scream.
Their white optical suits and carbon-fiber body armor dissolved into smooth, light-devouring obsidian plating.
Their silenced rifles turned into black void blades, and their eyes ignited with steady, subordinate argent embers as they tore their legs free from the stone, kneeling in a disciplined, flawless circle around Renan’s boots.
Commandant Vane watched his entire elite unit converted into shadow constructs in less than ten seconds, his breath catching in his throat as a cold, paralyzing terror seized his heart.
Sylas released Vane’s wrist, letting the commandant drop to his knees before Renan.
Renan looked down at the last surviving operative of the Black Needle Unit.
"Your unit belongs to my legion now, Vane," Renan said, his tone flat and unyielding. "And you are going to take your phone and call your handlers in Zurich."
Vane looked at his gauntlet, where his satellite transceiver was flashing a incoming status query from the Swiss Banking Consortium’s executive desk.
With shaking, blood-stained fingers, Vane raised the transceiver to his mouth, his voice trembling violently as he answered the call.
"Commandant Vane reporting..." Vane stammered into the microphone. "Target vault... neutralized. All data ledgers... destroyed by thermite ignition. No physical recovery possible."
A crisp, aristocratic Swiss voice responded through the speaker: "Confirmed, Commandant. The forty billion dollar bounty on Sector Zero’s clearing accounts remains active. Proceed to extraction point Alpha."
Vane cut the channel, dropping the radio onto the stone floor where Arthur’s heavy iron boot crushed it into useless plastic scrap.
Renan turned toward the unlocked server racks, his dark woolen coat sweeping past the kneeling shadow soldiers as Sylas flipped the master power breaker back on.
The four server racks hummed back to life, their green LED arrays lighting up the dark limestone vault as the optical drives resumed processing the trade transactions for the Mediterranean Smuggling Corridor.
"Arthur," Renan commanded, stepping toward the entry tunnel.
"Standing by, Sovereign," Arthur answered, bowing his head.
"Leave four shadow skirmishers to guard the servers," Renan ordered, his violet eyes looking down the dark catacomb corridor leading back to the surface streets of Paris. "We are going to Tokyo to collect the second half of our ledger."
