Chapter 65: Chapter 65: Who Is the Real White-Eyed Wolf?
Liu was so furious she nearly fainted. She wanted to lunge forward and hit her, but something held her back, and she didn’t dare act rashly. All she could do was point and curse, "You damned jinx! Have you no respect for your elders? Is this how your mother taught you to curse your seniors?"
"My mother taught me plenty. She taught me to respect the old and cherish the young. I didn’t understand before. I thought if I respected the old, the old would surely cherish the young in return. But now I get it. I respect the old, but there are no elders here cherishing the young. Since that’s the case, why should I bother respecting them anymore?"
"My mother and I worked like oxen for this Bai Family. We did all the work, inside and out. All you do all day is order us around while you sit in the shade. When it’s time to eat, you’re faster than rabbits. When it’s time to work, you’re slower than turtles. Even so, you never once treated my mother and me like Bai family members. We had to eat your leftovers and wear your tattered hand-me-downs. When we were sick, you wouldn’t get us treatment. When our house collapsed, you didn’t even spare a corner for us to take shelter. If you want to talk about ungrateful wretches, I’d say my mother and I have been raising a whole pack of them for years."
She delivered a rapid-fire tirade, her words clear and her speech fast, leaving Old Mrs. Bai and Liu choked and speechless.
She took a deep breath, suppressing the fury raging in her heart. In a cold voice, she continued, "My mother is gravely injured and needs to rest early. If you have no other business, don’t come bothering us. If you cause my mother to have a relapse, the debt you owe won’t be just six taels of silver."
At the mention of the six taels of silver, Old Mrs. Bai’s chest ached with pangs of pain. She pointed at Bai Zhi and cursed, "A debt *we* owe? If it weren’t for you, would any of this mess have happened? This is a debt *you* owe! You’d better remember that!"
Bai Zhi scoffed. "What? Have you forgotten what you just said? Who was it that said everything in the Bai Family is shared by all? What’s the matter? When you’re taking things in, it’s ’shared,’ but when things are going out, it’s not ’shared’ anymore?"
"You damn girl, stop trying to twist words with me! This debt of six taels of silver, you’ll pay it whether you want to or not! It’s not up to you." Old Mrs. Bai spat out the harsh words, fuming. She grabbed Liu, turned, and stormed into the house, slamming the door with a BANG as if it had personally offended her.
As soon as the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law entered the room, Liu tugged on Old Mrs. Bai’s sleeve. "Mother, have you noticed? That damn girl is like a completely different person. She’s so sharp-tongued now, not like before at all."
Old Mrs. Bai shot her a nasty look. "You think I need you to tell me? Do I not have eyes? So what if she’s changed? She’s still a girl of the Bai Family. We can’t wait any longer on this. Tomorrow, you go to Baiyang Village and ask around. See which family is looking for a wife, and get rid of her quickly. I don’t want to see her for even one more day."
Liu was secretly overjoyed. ’If we sell this girl,’ she thought, ’we’ll have the silver for Da Bao’s betrothal, and Xiao Feng’s tuition for next year will be covered too. Plus, we’ll get rid of this thorn in our side. It’s killing multiple birds with one stone.’
Bai Xiaofeng finished his homework and came into the room just in time to overhear his grandma and mother’s conversation. He quickly asked, "Grandma, Mother, who are you getting rid of? Bai Zhi?"
Seeing her grandson, Old Mrs. Bai’s expression instantly softened. She put on a smile and said, "Don’t you worry about this. Grandma will take care of it. You just focus on your studies."
Bai Xiaofeng shook his head. "No, no way! If you get rid of Bai Zhi, who will prepare my ink and brushes? Who will bring my meals to the academy and fan me to keep me cool?"
Old Mrs. Bai quickly said, "I’ll do it! From now on, I’ll do all those things, alright?"
Bai Xiaofeng shook his head like a drum-rattle. "No, no way! It’s not right for an old woman to do those things. I want a girl to do it."
