His eyes darted as he broke into a wide grin. "It’s fine if you get rid of Bai Zhi, but you have to buy me an obedient little maid to serve me exclusively."

Now it wasn’t just Old Mrs. Bai who was stunned; even Bai Xiaofeng’s own mother, Liu, was dumbfounded. ’Buy a maid to serve him?’

’Has he taken a look at the state of the Bai Family? We can barely feed ourselves, yet he wants to buy a maid? This has to be a joke.’

But he was, after all, their most precious grandson. They were counting on him to become a high official and bring prosperity to the entire family, so they naturally couldn’t go against his wishes. After a moment of stunned silence, she forced a smile and said, "Alright, alright, anything you say. Grandma will definitely find you an obedient maid, how does that sound?"

Satisfied, Bai Xiaofeng finally went back to his room.

Liu tugged at her mother-in-law’s sleeve. "Mother, are you really going to buy him a maid? How could our family possibly afford that!"

Old Mrs. Bai sighed and lowered her voice. "You think I don’t know we can’t afford it? Just humor him for now. We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it."

While the two were murmuring to each other, Ms. Zhang came out of the rear kitchen carrying a basin of greens with little salt and no oil, which she set on the table.

Old Mrs. Bai frowned immediately. "Didn’t I say yesterday that the food should be divided into individual portions for each person?"

Liu walked over to the table, glanced at the vegetable basin, and said snidely, "Is this all? You didn’t hide half of it, did you?"

Ms. Zhang snorted. "Some people are always projecting. They think that just because it’s something they would do, everyone else must be the same."

Liu’s expression shifted. "What’s that supposed to mean?"

Ms. Zhang shot her a look, her tone dripping with sarcasm. "What do you think it means? Don’t you know perfectly well?"

"Know what? You need proof to back up your words. Don’t just run your mouth and slander good people," Liu retorted, growing agitated.

Ms. Zhang said, "If you don’t want people to know, don’t do it. Sister-in-law, I didn’t want to say this, but you just insist on dumping your own crap on other people’s heads. I’m not Zhao Lan; I won’t just let you frame and bully me without fighting back."

The back-and-forth between them was giving Old Mrs. Bai a headache. "That’s enough! Both of you, quiet down! Are you going to go on forever?" When her two daughters-in-law finally stopped talking, Old Mrs. Bai pointed at the vegetable basin and demanded, "Why are there so few vegetables today? Who is this supposed to feed?"

Ms. Zhang said, "We’re out of cooking oil, these are the only vegetables left, and the rice jar is nearly empty."

There hadn’t been much rice to begin with. Old Mrs. Bai was just about to send Liu to Da Huzi’s house to borrow a few sacks, to be repaid after the green wheat harvest. The wild vegetables were always gathered by Bai Zhi. She was supposed to have gone yesterday, but because of that whole incident, it had been put off.

Old Mrs. Bai turned to Liu. "Go tell that damned girl she’s to go out and dig for wild vegetables first thing tomorrow morning. She’s got hands and feet, doesn’t she? Does she think she can just live here and eat for free?"

Recalling Bai Zhi’s ferocity, Liu quickly shook her head. "You’d better go, Mother. She doesn’t listen to a word I say these days."

Old Mrs. Bai’s gaze then fell upon Ms. Zhang. But Ms. Zhang knew what was coming, and before her mother-in-law could even open her mouth, she turned and headed back into the kitchen. ’This has nothing to do with me,’ she thought. ’After pissing that girl off, I have no desire to find out what it feels like to be beaten with a stick.’

Old Mrs. Bai was left with no choice. Recalling Bai Zhi’s earlier words, she simply said, "Fine. We’ll get her tomorrow morning. We don’t need that damned girl flying into another rage."

This was exactly what Liu had hoped for. ’That Bai Zhi has changed far too much,’ she thought. ’Especially when she starts hitting people. She’s so fast, accurate, and ruthless. She beat me so badly I couldn’t even think of fighting back.’
