Chapter 996: Chapter 474: Scientific Shadows in Mythology (Second Update)
"Grandmaster Grandpa, how did you know it was me calling? I haven’t even said anything yet!" Lawrence Winters perked up and asked curiously.
The old Daoist chuckled, "My phone has caller ID."
Lawrence Winters: "..."
Whoa! Totally forgot about that...
She also found it amusing.
Lawrence Winters put on her Bluetooth headset and placed her phone back into her small backpack, casually carrying it in her hand as she politely started the conversation, "Grandmaster Grandpa, how is your health? Is it hot in the mountains lately?"
The old Daoist touched his head, peered out at the green mountains and clear water through the window, and said with a smile, "Good, it’s quite cool in the mountains now. It’s like living in a giant natural air conditioner and it even adjusts the humidity."
"That sounds amazing!" Lawrence praised continuously, "Then I’m relieved. How are my mom and Master? They’re doing well too, right?"
"Those two are really having fun. Yesterday, they said they were going to camp on the mountain top to watch the sunrise. But now the sun is out, and they still haven’t come down; probably slept through it. Who’s watching the sunrise now..." The old Daoist snorted softly, seemingly unimpressed, yet his tone was relaxed. Even his complaints carried a lazy, laid-back vibe.
"Camping on the mountaintop to watch the sunrise?! Wow, they’re really having fun!" Lawrence expressed her genuine envy, while also feeling glad she didn’t call her mom directly to interrupt their cozy time together. Even if her mom and Master didn’t get angry, she herself would feel bad.
The old Daoist lay on a long couch by the window, with a gentle breeze blowing through the mesh window. It brought a refreshing coolness that blew away the last bit of summer heat.
He asked Lawrence again, "Lawrence, is everything going smoothly abroad? Are you used to the food? How’s your place? Everything’s great at home, but traveling is tough. Don’t be stingy... Grandmaster Grandpa has money here, it’s all yours!"
Lawrence felt a warm sensation in her heart, especially when the old Daoist said, "Grandmaster Grandpa has money here, it’s all yours." It was like a magical elixir from the Queen Mother of the West. Even from thousands of miles away, just hearing it made her feel revitalized, like being reborn.
Her bright eyes curved into crescent moons like those on the first night of the lunar New Year, and she said sweetly, "Everything’s good. In Chinatown, I can still find familiar Eastern food. I’m not used to Western cuisine, but maybe I haven’t had really good Western food yet. My accommodation is good too, in a five-star hotel. Yup, I won’t be stingy when I’m outside; I’ll spend when I should!"
After some small talk, the old Daoist started rambling in praise of her again, "Lawrence, I saw you participated in a competition. Really brought glory to our Zeller Branch! Way better than your Master!"
"Back then, I wanted your Master to participate in the competition. He researched the rules and the participants, then decided not to bother... Hmph! That guy’s just lazy! Otherwise, how could some Grant Branch guy win the grand title twice?"
Lawrence was extremely surprised, "Huh? Grandmaster Grandpa, you know about this competition?! I thought you didn’t know..."
Otherwise, in these twenty years, she had never heard the old Daoist or Nick mention it.
"Of course, I know." The old Daoist scoffed, "But those Grant Branch people have long considered me dead, never contacting me. I originally planned to give them a taste of their own medicine, to let them know your Grandpa is still your Grandpa! But your Master is disappointing!"
The old Daoist complained about Nick Zeller for a while, and of course, seized the opportunity to once again shower Lawrence with praise, unparalleled in the world, "Our Lawrence is truly powerful! Incomparable talent! It’s the special meal bestowed by the Grand Master. You must partake in it!—Just by going, you stunned them! Compete well and bring back the grand prize for our Zeller Branch! It’ll drive those useless fools crazy hahaha!"
Lawrence also felt a bit proud, but she managed to restrain herself, not following along with the self-praise.
After the old Daoist finished his compliments, Lawrence had already found a spot to sit down in the hotel lobby.
She wasn’t in a hurry to have dinner anymore and decided she would have a good chat with the old Daoist.
The place she sat in was the café on the east side of the hotel lobby. At this hour, there weren’t many people around, just two or three sitting there, keeping a good social distance from each other.
Lawrence even took out a black mask and put it on.
This way, she could cover her mouth and not show the shape of her lips while talking.
Some people who can read lips wouldn’t be able to understand what she was saying.
Plus, the spot where she was sitting had an open window. Outside was a small garden.
It was already dark, and fireflies glimmered in the garden, filling the air with the chirping sounds of summer insects. But it wasn’t annoying; along with occasional frog croaks and cuckoo calls, it felt like being amidst mountains.
