Chapter 997: Chapter 474: Scientific Shadows in Mythology (Second Update)_2

Lawrence Winters lounged back with one leg crossed, pulled out her iPad and pretended to be reading, while secretly asking, "Grandmaster, did you watch my competition?"

"Of course I did! The Celestial Path Sect app was streaming it live. Your master counted so much money his hands went numb! His mouth’s been crooked these past few days!"

"...Hands going numb from counting money I get, but why did his mouth go crooked?"

"Hahahahaha! Crooked from laughing! Your master’s just like you, total money grubber!" The old Daoist laughed even harder. 𝒻𝘳ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝒷𝘯ℴ𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝑐ℴ𝑚

Lawrence burst out laughing. "Then Master must be over the moon!"

"You bet. Ever since he married your mom, your master basically fell into a vat of honey..." The old Daoist’s words sounded a bit sour, but the smug happiness for him was still obvious.

Knowing that her family wasn’t just doing well but genuinely happy, Lawrence felt even more cheerful.

She nodded and kept asking, "Then you saw me cracking the whip to save people at the end last week, right?"

The old Daoist jumped up excitedly and started gesturing with his hands. "Of course I saw! My precious Lawrence descended like a heavenly weapon! Wielding the Divine Whip, all demons and wraiths had nowhere to hide!"

After letting the old Daoist finish bragging, Lawrence continued, "The tricky part about this case was that it didn’t just have Eastern Geomantic Formations and Nightmare Town, but also Western Black Magic. But you told me that Soft Whip was the Flood Dragon Tendor Whip, so how can it emit Holy Light? And even restrain Black Magic?"

The old Daoist chuckled, "Why can’t an Eastern Flood Dragon Tendor Whip emit Holy Light? Why can’t it restrain Black Magic? Are you discriminating against our Eastern Magic Artifacts now?"

"How could I?!" Lawrence knew the old Daoist was joking, but she still had to clear her name—’discrimination’ had basically become a taboo word; everyone was scared of being labeled. "I’m just really curious. You know the other seven Daoists present? They had Magic Artifacts too, but none of theirs could emit Holy Light, much less restrain Black Magic."

The old Daoist’s smile widened and he snorted lightly, "Those Grant Branch people are all short-sighted and ignorant. They finish high school and think they’ve read half the library—how could they possibly cultivate solid Celestial Path Skill? They’re a bunch of trash! Our Lawrence crushes them in both IQ and education level!"

Lawrence didn’t know whether to laugh or cry, and still spoke up fairly for the Grant Branch people. "Grandmaster, honestly I think cultivation itself is already a kind of scholarship, it just runs on a different track from the regular school system. To be real, whether someone goes to college or not isn’t that important for a cultivator. As long as they can read, use a computer, and have basic common sense, that’s enough."

The old Daoist nodded. "You’re not wrong saying that. But Lawrence, you need to understand: if you want to do anything the best, to the extreme, all paths connect. Doing scholarship and cultivating the Way are the same; when science and metaphysics reach their limits, maybe they end up at the same destination. Or maybe they were the same thing from the start—born from the same mother."

Lawrence: "!!!"

What the hell do you mean "born from the same mother"!

This is the kind of line that would make Newton curse, Einstein cry, and have The Three Pure Ones waving a big broom to kick this old Daoist out of the sect...

Lawrence grumbled internally, but of course didn’t dare say it out loud.

She just smiled and "mm mm mm"-ed perfunctorily at the old Daoist.

The old Daoist thought she agreed with him, so he got even more excited, waving arms and legs. "Seriously, a lot of myths can be explained with science, if science gets developed far enough."

"For example, both Eastern and Western ancient myths have records of a great flood."

"But do you know why there was a great flood? In both Eastern and Western myths, even the reasons for the flood are almost identical!"

Lawrence: "..."

Now she was curious. "No way, right? I remember the reason for the great flood in Eastern mythology was that Gonggong knocked over the pillar of Buzhou Mountain, which punched a hole in the sky, so the river of heaven poured down and flooded the earth."

"In Western mythology, the great flood was because God was displeased with sinners, so He sent the flood to cleanse humanity."

The old Daoist nodded. "On the surface it does look like that. But have you ever dug into the details?"

Lawrence almost dropped to her knees before the old Daoist, thinking, why would I dig into those details? I’m not a religious person, and definitely not a graduate student from some divinity school...

But she still listened patiently to the old Daoist’s explanation.

The old Daoist went on, "Actually the reason is simple. If you really drill down into the details of the great flood in Eastern and Western myths, you’ll find their origin is the same, the process is the same, even the outcome is the same. What does that say? It says it probably really happened. It’s just that our ancient ancestors who passed the stories down draped it in a layer of mystique and covered up the truth."
