Chapter 995: Chapter 473: The Answer She Wanted (First Update)

Evan Stetford laughed and said, "Miss Winters is right over there eating. Do you want to speak to her yourselves?"

Mr. Zhu thought for a moment and said, "Better not. Please tell her we don’t regret it."

He hung up.

Evan Stetford shook his head with a smile, walked over and relayed the call to Lawrence Winters.

Lawrence quickly put down her small plate and complained, "Why didn’t you let me talk to them? I still have a lot of questions for them..."

"I suggested it, but they said there was no need, and asked me to tell you they don’t regret it."

Lawrence: "..."

What’s with that tone like they’re giving last instructions?

The hairs on the back of Lawrence’s neck stood up; her instincts told her something was wrong.

But when she used Evan’s phone to call Mr. Zhu’s number, the call wouldn’t go through anymore.

"They might already be on the plane," Evan shrugged. "To get to the cruise you have to take a ship out from the coastal port. I know the cruise they signed with is still sailing on the high seas."

Lawrence hesitated for quite a while, then decided to let it go.

She was a Heavenly Master; she couldn’t get entangled in too much karmic cause and effect.

And with Mr. and Mrs. Zhu, she felt she’d already taken on a bit too much karma.

This couple was still hiding things from her. Since they didn’t want to talk, she didn’t want to press.

...

Over the next week, Lawrence took a few days to properly rest and recuperate.

The physical therapist came every day to give her therapy, at least two hours a day, and then she did her own rehab exercises.

After a few days, her shoulder had fully recovered; even if she grabbed a rope and swung herself high into the air, it was fine.

On Friday night, Lawrence showered early and changed, planning to go out to dinner.

Tonight Quentin Parker was treating, and he’d invited not only her but also Kenneth Osborne, and supposedly some other guests.

Lawrence didn’t want to leave a bad impression, so she chose a simple, proper little black dress and put on a strand of natural saltwater pearls.

She was just about to head out when her phone suddenly rang.

She took the phone out of her small bag and saw it was a call from Evan Stetford.

"Evan, calling me at this hour—you do realize it’s Friday night, right?" Lawrence said with a playful grin.

Evan didn’t pick up on her joking tone, but said very seriously, "Lawrence, I just got word. The cruise Mr. and Mrs. Zhu boarded five days ago hit a storm on the high seas and capsized. Their names are on the casualty list."

"What?!" Lawrence’s eyes flew wide. "No way! They... they... Wait, don’t cruises have lifeboats on board?"

"All the nearby countries on the high seas sent warships to help with the search and recovery. They’ve found all the bodies. Miss Zhu has already received notice and gone to claim her parents..."

Lawrence let out a low exclamation: "God... can that girl even handle this?!"

"...She’s very strong. She went alone, found a local funeral service, and had them transport her parents back. Tomorrow we’re going to offer incense in front of her parents’ memorial tablets. Are you coming?"

Lawrence lowered her gaze, thought for a moment, and said, "I need to think about it. Evan, I’ve got something to do; I’m hanging up for now."

Lawrence’s mind was in chaos; she didn’t know how to respond. 𝑓𝑟ℯℴ𝓂

She remembered the faces she’d read for the Zhu couple, and for Alice Blythe.

Back then she’d been puzzled by the shifts in their facial fortunes, even wondering if she’d misread them.

Turns out she hadn’t.

The Zhu couple had used their own lives to trade for Alice Blythe’s life...

Parents really can love their children to that extent.

A sour ache rose in her chest; her eyes grew damp, but she didn’t want to cry.

As she walked out the door, she suddenly really wanted to talk to her own mom.

She checked the time: it should be around seven-thirty in the morning back home. Gabrielle Winters and the others were in the mountains—at this hour they might already be up.

Thinking this, Lawrence still dialed the landline at the old Daoist’s house.

She didn’t want to call a mobile right now; what if Gabrielle was still sleeping?

It wouldn’t be good to wake her.

The landline had barely rung twice before someone picked up.

"Hello, Lawrence?" It was actually the old Daoist’s voice.

Lawrence’s heart gave a little jump, and her tense expression finally eased.

Hearing the old Daoist’s voice was like suddenly having a pillar to lean on.

She had a feeling the old Daoist definitely held the answers she wanted.

After all, that Flood Dragon Tendor Whip was given to her by him.
