Chapter 1539: Chapter 38: Blitz (21)_2

"How long will it take to take Maple Slope?"

Before the temperature dropped below freezing, Peterlov finally spoke up. He looked at Yegor, with eyes as sharp as knives, capable of cutting countless bloody wounds on a person’s skin!

The officers and staff beside him were silent, looking at Yegor with pity.

This question was Peterlov’s last chance for Yegor.

The mistake of the 2122 division almost buried the entire western line of Phoenix City. If it weren’t for the fact that everyone knew in the First-tier Sky Canyon, the 2111 division had a group holding the fort, the enemy could never pass through the narrow road in a short time. Otherwise, Peterlov’s first order upon reaching the front line would be to execute Yegor!

Yegor smiled bitterly.

He knew that Peterlov had already given him a chance. However, this also meant that Peterlov had not yet awake to realize what kind of troop the 21st Army Group was encountering this time!

Yegor’s silence made Peterlov’s face look worse.

Just when everyone was sweating for Yegor, they suddenly found that Yegor had actually taken off his epaulet himself.

"I’m sorry, Admiral," Yegor bowed his head: "The morale of my division is severely damaged, I’m afraid we can’t continue to launch offensives... Moreover, I suggest quickly building fortifications to prevent our forces from suffering heavier losses."

Dead silence reigned in the command post. The officers and staff of the 2122 division looked ashen, while the other three division commanders following Peterlov wore expressions of disbelief.

Yegor went mad?!

He’s asking four elite armored divisions to build fortifications to defend against a single armored group?!

Peterlov was furious enough to go mad, looking at his beloved trusted general, he wished he could tear him into pieces!

But soon, he restrained his burgeoning anger.

Yegor’s deathly pale face made him realize that things might not be as he imagined.

No one knows Yegor better than he does. This high-achieving student he personally promoted from the Military Academy is definitely not an idiot who can’t tell priorities and throws down the gauntlet to embarrass him at a critical moment.

"What’s going on?" Peterlov asked in a deep voice.

Yegor’s lips trembled, his voice hoarse: "General, I think you should see for yourself."

From Yegor’s words, Peterlov instinctively felt a sense of danger, he took a deep look at Yegor, and simply turned around: "Go!"

Besides the shelter, officers divided among three command mechas, under the escort of Peterlov’s guard regiment, marched toward the frontline.

The night enveloped the entire mountain area. Under the starlight, the babbling brook along the roadside shimmered. Trees resounded in the wind with a whooshing sound reminiscent of torrential rain.

In the valleys and on the slopes, Suss Mecha teams clustered together. Some units waited aside, others jogged toward the combat zone. Chaotic lights shuffled everywhere, various accents mingled, painting the entire mountain area in a chaotic urgency.

The presence of the army group’s direct guard regiment forced the units crowded on the main road to retreat to the sides. Exhausted Suss Mecha Warriors stood in the muddy earth, watching the queue of senior officers head toward a mountain top illuminated red by artillery fire.

The closer to the combat front, the louder the artillery sounds.

Entering the area four kilometers from Maple Slope, the officers in the command mechas could already see rows of field hospital tents, and the wounded being sent down from the frontline like water.

One Medical Mecha after another zipped by in front of them, occasionally seeing groups of soldiers rushing with stretchers.

Reinforcement troops silently pushed forward, while officers’ shouts sounded hollow and exhausted amid the far-off gunfire.

In the sky, massive energy cannon lights flowed like comets, their glaring brilliance, the thunderous noise akin to a train entering a tunnel, as if heralding a grand festival of hell.

All around lay scattered mecha wreckage, concentrated in the center of the road by Engineering Mechas. On the hills, they burned unattended. In some places, trees were ignited, resembling enormous torches.

The officers silently watched everything before them, the scene made their hearts grow heavier.

The troops were blocked in this area no wider than five kilometers, stretching over thirty kilometers, almost immovable. And ahead, was there really only an enemy group?!

If true, then what kind of troop was it?!

When the troops arrived at a mountain pass, the command mechas halted. The officers gathered around Peterlov as he exited the mecha, gazing around.

The entire mountain pass had become a massive and noisy forward base. Whistle sounds, shouts, engine roars, intertwined in a chaotic mess.

Not far to the left, several makeshift repair sites had mechanics urgently repairing battle-damaged mechas. To the right, tens of meters away, sweating logistic officers were tensely directing mechas and soldiers in loading and unloading weapons and ammunition.

Some soldiers ran around on the muddy ground that had been trampled until water sprang out, their gray combat uniforms were soaked with flowing mud, their faces dirty enough only to reveal frightened, frantic eyes and white teeth.

At a slightly higher point at the foot of the mountain, a long row of field hospitals were set up. Occasionally, wounded were carried in and out. The empty space outside was filled with stretchers bearing injured soldiers. The moans, groans, were endless. Apart from a few medical soldiers and nurses shuttling among them for simple treatments, no one could spare attention to care for them.
