Chapter 1538: Chapter 38: Blitz (21)
"General!"
"General!"
Peterlov walked into the low frontline command post, his face dark and stern.
Ignoring his subordinate who jumped up to salute, he went straight to the observation slot, picked up the portable long-range viewer handed over by the adjutant, and looked into the distance.
The booming artillery echoed through the valley, deafening. In the distant black night sky, balls of energy cannon light resembled a doomsday meteor shower.
These terrifying destroyers slanted and crashed into the ground, transforming into larger white lights that drilled out from the earth, rapidly spreading across the land.
On the hills shrouded in darkness, below the hills, countless similar lights flickered, sporadic and intermittent.
When the bright light faded into the night, the thunderous sound finally came through. Even though the frontline was five kilometers away, one could still feel the ground shaking beneath their feet.
"Commander." Yegor, division commander of the 2122nd division rushed back to the command post and saluted Peterlov.
This Major General, the most battle-ready armored division of the 21st Army Group, had golden hair disheveled like a bird’s nest. Sweat dripped down his face, covered in soot and dust, carving out channels. His uniform collar was hastily buttoned upon entering the command post, mismatched buttonholes made him look disheveled and ridiculous.
However, no one would laugh at him.
Everyone knew exactly what had happened, and they knew Yegor had been commanding the battle at the very frontline.
But everything seemed ineffective. Despite blocking the path at Maple Slope, it was only an armored group!
Peterlov ignored Yegor. His face dark as iron, lowered the temperature of the entire underground command post below zero. If one listened closely, they could even hear the trembling teeth of the staff who dared not breathe nearby.
The 2122nd division had made a colossal mistake.
The four forward reconnaissance squads and an electronic mecha platoon completely failed to notice the enemy reconnaissance forces already present beside them.
These blind reconnaissance soldiers foolishly marched onto Maple Slope, sending incorrect information back to the rear main force.
The reconnaissance soldier’s dereliction of duty destroyed themselves and doomed the subsequent two armored camps. Ten minutes after the main force received the false report of no trace of Fei Alliance troops at the front, the four reconnaissance squads and an electronic mecha platoon simultaneously disappeared. Shortly after, two battalions of the unsuspecting 2122nd division’s 1st Group encountered sudden ambush one kilometer from the main peak of Maple Slope.
It was a premeditated ambush. The Suss Armored Forces, thrust into the Fei Alliance encirclement, lost 30% of their mechas during the enemy’s initial powerful assault and were segmented into six sections by the enemy armored forces interspersing through. Grassroots commanders were even targeted for execution immediately.
The battle was inevitable. Less than five minutes, the troops collapsed.
The fleeing vanguard forces of Suss were driven by the enemy like ducks along the base of the mountain.
When the following troops heard gunfire and prepared to occupy the surrounding highlands to organize a blockade, over two hundred fleeing Suss mechas had already retreated in panic before them.
The entire unit plunged into congestion and chaos.
Grassroots commanders yelled frantically, urging soldiers to stabilize the formation. Some officers led troops personally to the flanks, attempting to establish a bridgehead on the high ground and stabilize the situation.
However, all these efforts were like a glass ball, lifted high and then shattered by the enemy already ambushed on the surrounding high grounds.
The Suss Armored Group crowded in the valley became lambs to the slaughter.
When the rear unit seized the ridge and skirted the steep hillside to reinforce, the cunning enemy had already retreated like a tide. What remained were rows of neatly wrecked Suss mechas along the two kilometers northeast passage of Maple Slope.
The 2122nd division’s negligence, reconnaissance soldiers’ dereliction, resulted in the main Suss force being in chaos for a full twenty minutes, unable to advance a step.
By the time Yegor hastily arrived at the frontline and reorganized the troops with kicks and punches, ordering the attack, half an hour had already passed.
Half an hour might be insignificant in another time. But at this critical juncture, it was a heavy blow to the head of the 21st Army Group!
Without waiting for Peterlov’s command, the 2122nd division immediately launched an offensive under Yegor’s command.
Frontal, flanks, any place where formation could be spread out saw the surge of Suss Armored Forces.
Grassroots officers took the lead in charging forward, and the soldiers behind used all their might. Every staff member was working at full capacity, artillery camp’s fire coverage and pinpoint elimination, never paused for a second.
But reality was brutal.
Until now, the 2122nd division hadn’t advanced a step...and the SkyNet screen showing battle damage statistics over fifty-to-one stunned every Suss officer.
The opponent, only an armored group, yet stood as an impassable chasm!
This was something everyone found unacceptable!
Standing before the iron-faced Peterlov, Yegor looked pale, cold sweat pouring down.
Two minutes before rushing to the command post, he had just received news. The offensives launched by the 3rd Group and Fourth Group were again frustrated. The 3rd Group was slightly better, but the left-wing Fourth Group almost collapsed under enemy counterattack. If not for the guard company under the regiment protecting them with their lives, the regiment commander nearly got killed on the spot!
