Cooking Gourmet Meals in the Apocalypse
Chapter 220 - 217: Your God’s Family Is Way Too Broad
Chapter 220: Chapter 217: Your God’s Family Is Way Too Broad
It wasn’t fear, but a sense of utter helplessness.
Because she knew she definitely wouldn’t die.
But was she supposed to just watch as the two companions she had spent nearly a month with in the mountains died?
’No!’
She wouldn’t allow it!
The wheels rolled over the zombie horde, but their speed was limited.
Zombies on both sides of the road would periodically rush up to cause trouble.
If the little wolf cub clearing the path up ahead hadn’t been soaking in the spring water all day, it would probably be dead from exhaustion by now.
Chen Xing steeled herself and opened the car door.
Her only choice was to let Meng Hu go out and clear the way too, so they could get through the zombie horde as quickly as possible.
After jumping out of the car, Meng Hu immediately dove into the horde ahead, doing its best to block the encroaching zombies from the sides.
The orange-red tide behind them seemed to have shrunk considerably and wasn’t as ferocious as before.
But no one dared to breathe a sigh of relief.
Because the zombies that had fallen behind them were now getting back up.
They might not be able to catch up, but it would still be very dangerous if the group was delayed.
The little wolf cub was starting to struggle, so Meng Hu dove into the zombie tide and snatched up Little Grass in its mouth.
With its large size and immense strength, the zombies in front of it toppled like bowling pins.
Xiao Long’s attention was completely fixed on the road ahead, so he didn’t notice the little wolf cub approach. Chen Xing took the opportunity to recall it into her space.
Of course, Wen Yan, sitting in the back seat, couldn’t see any of this.
Meng Hu not only knocked down the zombies but also shoved some of them aside to clear a path for the car.
This time, their speed increased considerably.
As the road ahead gradually became visible, the orange-red heatwave behind them also slowly stopped advancing.
When Meng Hu got back in the car, it was still holding Little Grass in its mouth. Unnoticed by the others, it secretly spat it into Chen Xing’s hand.
It could have just tossed it outside, but she didn’t want to.
’This thing is seriously dangerous.’
’It’s better if no one else finds it.’
Xiao Long let out a breath of relief, feeling a stream of sweat run down from his forehead. "We made it out alive, right?"
For a moment there, he thought they were dead for sure.
"I think so?" Wen Yan wasn’t too sure either, his voice trembling.
He felt this was the most difficult and dangerous mission he had ever been on.
"Sister Xing, aren’t you scared at all?" He really admired Chen Xing.
She had managed to stay so calm in such a dangerous situation.
"I was scared!" Chen Xing said, stroking Meng Hu. "Thankfully, we have him!"
"Huh? Where’d that little wolf cub go?" Now that he’d recovered a bit, Xiao Long noticed the cub was gone.
"It probably ran off!" Wen Yan said, looking around. "What a good little cub, huh?"
Now that they were safe, Wen Yan contacted the pilot and told him not to take off just yet. He would get back in touch once they found a precise location and an airport.
Their car drove on.
The weather, which had been suffocatingly hot, turned sharply cold.
Before long, they entered a world of ice and snow.
They put on their winter coats before continuing the search for the nearest airport.
After driving for more than two hours, they finally saw a building appear up ahead.
From a distance, it looked like a church, with a pointed roof.
The building stood at the foot of a mountain about five hundred meters from the road, its glass windows a kaleidoscope of colors.
The structure was quite large, and a white, decorative fence—not sturdy enough to stop any monsters—encircled its perimeter.
While their car was still some distance away, several people dressed in white clothes emerged from the building.
They were all spotlessly clean, giving off a friendly vibe.
With affable smiles on their faces, they walked slowly but enthusiastically out from behind the fence, heading toward Chen Xing and the others.
The trio, who hadn’t originally planned on stopping, were so affected by their warmth that they felt compelled to pull over.
"Hello, my friends from afar! Welcome to our peaceful home, a gift from God!" The leader was a middle-aged man named Nick.
He had a stubbly beard and a face full of fervor.
When they saw Meng Hu get out of the car, not a single person showed any fear. They even came forward to stroke him in a very friendly manner.
"Hello!" Chen Xing said as she got out, her gaze falling upon the house with its particularly striking architecture.
Seen up close, the building looked even more like a mystical Royal Palace from a comic book, absolutely magnificent.
’Many girls dream of being a Princess and living in a building just like this, don’t they?’
Nick had someone go park their car while he personally led the three distinguished guests on foot toward the palace-like house. "Now that you’re here, just think of it as coming home!"
After passing through the low gate in the fence, they saw a vegetable garden.
Due to the cold weather, it was covered with black plastic sheeting, presumably for insulation.
Inside the house, the first floor wasn’t filled with rows of pews like they’d imagined a church would be.
It was a grand hall, looking as if it could accommodate several hundred to over a thousand people.
A large circle was drawn in the very center, containing a strange, incomprehensible pattern.
’This kind of weird drawing often appears in cult movies.’
Wen Yan moved closer to Chen Xing and whispered as he looked at the pattern, "This place feels like some kind of deceptive cult."
Xiao Long, however, didn’t think so. He looked at the kind-faced people with enthusiasm. "They all look like good people to me. Taking in refugees... how kind is that?"
As he spoke, his eyes shone.
He loved this family-like atmosphere.
He had been an orphan since he was young, raised by his aunt and uncle.
Although his aunt and uncle were good to him, it was never the same as having his own flesh and blood.
Now, the people around him were looking at him as if he were their own son, and he was naturally captivated.
Chen Xing and Wen Yan glanced at Xiao Long at the same time.
Xiao Long didn’t sense anything strange at all and had already been pulled aside to talk by someone.
Everyone here spoke the international common tongue, so they could all communicate.
Chen Xing and Wen Yan were also soon surrounded by several people, who chatted with them about God... ’Sorry,’ she thought, ’but in my mind, God and the "Old Man in the Sky" are one and the same—just a way to fool others, or yourself.’
"God guided you here because you are God’s children... blah, blah, blah..."
"We are all one family brought together by God... blah, blah, blah..."
’All right!’
’This "family of God" of yours is a bit too broad!’
Chen Xing wasn’t listening at all, her eyes fixed on the surrounding windows.
The glass was beautiful. It was multicolored, and in the setting sun, it wasn’t glaring but instead cast a dazzling, colorful light.
It was like a patchwork of beauty, a stunning radiance.
Just as she was lost in this beautiful light, a flash of white streaked past outside the colorful glass.
It was incredibly fast, so fast that she could only assume it was a trick of the light.
’But... how could that just be a trick of the light?’
Chen Xing’s attention snapped back to reality. She looked over at Wen Yan and Xiao Long not far away.
The two of them seemed to be immersed in some beautiful words, their faces filled with faint, blissful smiles.
Especially Xiao Long, whose eyes were shining and whose smile was sincere and joyous.
’Something’s wrong!’
A smile playing on her lips, Chen Xing lowered her head, covered her mouth, and pretended to cough twice. She used the opportunity to enter her space. Her mind cleared in an instant, as if the scene just now had been a dream.
