Chapter 377: Chapter 225: Yixia, Don’t Blame Me, I’m Sleeping in One Bed Tonight
Lu Fan didn’t answer his question. He just looked at the man and said, "My fiancée doesn’t like making friends."
Jiang Yixia froze for a second, her face instantly turning red. She shot him a glare.
The man in the floral shirt looked at Lu Fan, then at Jiang Yixia, his expression changing repeatedly. His face went from pale to flushed and back again.
He opened his mouth, about to say something, but when he saw the look in Lu Fan’s eyes, he swallowed his words.
It was a cold, indifferent gaze, like he was looking at a dead man, or perhaps an ant. It was clear Lu Fan didn’t consider him worth a second thought.
"Alright, alright, my apologies." He gave a speechless wave, then turned and fled, his steps so fast it was as if a ghost was chasing him.
He nearly collided with a nurse pushing a medicine cart, almost sending his phone flying from his hand.
Chen He watched him hurry away before turning to ask, "Boss, should I run a background check on him?"
Lu Fan waved his hand dismissively, his tone calm. "No need. He’s just a fly."
He turned to Jiang Yixia and smiled. All the previous coldness vanished, as if he’d become a different person. "Let’s go. I’ve got the medicine."
Jiang Yixia retorted, "Who’s your fiancée?"
Lu Fan chuckled, taking the bag of medicine from the pharmacist. With an innocent look, he said, "I was speaking in the future tense, not the present tense. Look at you, getting worked up again."
Jiang Yixia was left speechless, not knowing what to say. Instead, she gave his shoulder a sharp pinch.
"Ow!" Lu Fan feigned pain. "What was that for?"
"Hmph!" Jiang Yixia stuck her tongue out at him like an eighteen-year-old girl, then walked away smugly.
Watching her nimble little tongue, Lu Fan couldn’t help but muse, ’Still so flexible.’
Lu Fan caught up, falling into step beside her. His pace was neither fast nor slow, a perfect match for hers, keeping them shoulder-to-shoulder.
Neither of them spoke.
In the hallway, nurses occasionally passed by pushing carts, and they would all steal a second glance at the pair.
One young nurse even secretly whispered to her colleague, "That guy is so handsome. Is he a celebrity?"
The other whispered back, "No, he’s the family of a VIP the hospital director personally mentioned. I heard he’s a big boss."
When they reached the door to the hospital room, Jiang Yixia stopped and looked back at him. "When did you get here?"
Lu Fan said, "Just now. I had some business in Yangcheng for the past two days."
"You have business." Jiang Yixia was clearly skeptical.
"Of course. I’m a very busy man, you know." In truth, Lu Fan hadn’t told her that he had spent the last two days picking out a luxury villa for her and had already paid the deposit.
"By the way, how’s our mom doing?"
"Much better. The doctor said she can be discharged after a few more days of observation." Jiang Yixia’s voice softened, losing its earlier sharp edge, and the tension in her brow eased.
Lu Fan nodded. "That’s good. I’ll be in Yangcheng for the next few days, so call me anytime if you need anything."
When Pan Lanfang saw Lu Fan come in, her face blossomed into a wide smile, and she insisted on sitting up.
Lu Fan hurried over, helped her lean against the headboard, fluffed her pillow, and tucked in the corners of her blanket.
"Auntie, don’t move. Just stay lying down," he said softly, his tone as gentle as if he were speaking to his own mother.
Pan Lanfang grabbed his hand, looking him over with growing satisfaction until her eyes grew a little red. "Xiaolu, we really have you to thank for everything this time."
"If you hadn’t made the arrangements, how could an old couple like us ever afford such a nice hospital? Your uncle was up all last night, talking about how good you are. He said you’re more devoted than a real son."
Lu Fan smiled back. "Auntie, please don’t say that. It’s what I should do. Just focus on getting better. Once you’re discharged, I’ll take you to stay at my place for a few days. The air is good there, perfect for recuperating. I’ll have the chef make you some of his specialties to help you regain your strength."
"Yes, yes, of course. I’ll go as soon as I’m better." Pan Lanfang was grinning from ear to ear as she patted the side of the bed.
Jiang Guoqiang, standing nearby, smiled as well, the wrinkles on his face smoothing out. He murmured, "This kid... he’s so thoughtful, so very thoughtful."
And so, Lu Fan spent the entire day in the hospital room with Pan Lanfang, occasionally cracking jokes to make her laugh.
It wasn’t until that evening that he drove Jiang Yixia home.
He parked the car downstairs from her apartment building.
Jiang Yixia unbuckled her seatbelt but didn’t rush to get out.
She sat in the passenger seat, gazing at the streetlights outside, and remained silent for a long while.
Lu Fan didn’t press her, simply waiting. His fingers tapped a light, rhythmic beat on the steering wheel, the sound especially clear in the quiet car.
The car was so quiet they could hear each other breathing, one soft, one heavy.
After a good while, Jiang Yixia finally spoke, her voice so soft it was almost as if she were talking to herself. "Are you hungry?"
Lu Fan paused, turning to look at her.
Jiang Yixia spoke again, a little louder this time but still hesitant, her fingers fidgeting with the seatbelt strap. "Do you... want to come up for a bowl of noodles?"
Lu Fan looked at her, the corners of his mouth slowly turning up into a smile, his eyes bright. "Okay."
The two of them got out of the car and went upstairs.
Jiang Yixia walked in front, with Lu Fan following behind.
Once inside, Jiang Yixia changed her shoes and said, "Have a seat. It won’t take long."
She tied on an apron and went into the kitchen.
The sound of the faucet running, the rhythmic chopping of scallions, the click of the stove igniting. Soon, the water in the pot was bubbling away, and a fragrant aroma mixed with the scent of fresh scallions began to fill the air.
Instead of sitting on the sofa, Lu Fan walked to the kitchen doorway and leaned against the frame, watching her.
Her back was slender, and the apron strings were tied in a loose, slightly crooked bow at her waist.
She was looking down, mincing scallions. Her movements were light and quick, the knife rising and falling with clean, efficient strokes, producing perfectly even pieces.
"What are you looking at?" Although she didn’t turn her head, the tips of her ears turned red.
Lu Fan chuckled, crossing his arms and shifting his weight as he leaned against the frame. "Just watching you... get things hot and steamy in here."
