Chapter 98: Chapter 98: How Would You Know If You Don’t Try?
If it’s Hugh watching him, escaping is pretty much impossible.
But Jay Monroe isn’t an idiot either. If Hugh’s keeping an eye on him, then let him. He just won’t go out, simple as that. If Hugh’s got balls, he can come down with his gun and try to catch him.
Decision made, Jay Monroe started a call with Team Blue’s commander, telling him not to bother coming to rescue—he would hunker down and keep himself safe.
Team Blue’s commander realized the enemy sniper was locked onto Jay Monroe, and that meant Hugh was tied up, too. At least until Jay Monroe was dealt with, the enemy’s sniper wouldn’t shift targets—a small silver lining.
After saying that, Jay Monroe was about to find a nice, hidden spot to lie down, when something flashed through his mind—he stopped in his tracks and quickly grabbed the communicator to call Team Blue’s commander again.
The fact Team Red’s sniper had targeted him wasn’t just coincidence; odds are their original mission was to hunt Jay Monroe down.
In this situation, Team Red’s sniper would definitely keep him under close watch. Now, all their attention was focused on Jay Monroe—which meant Renee Morgan could move.
Team Blue’s commander hesitated: "That Team Red sniper, Hugh, is really strong. Renee Morgan can’t beat him..."
Jay Monroe: "You don’t know until you try, right?"
He was honestly curious about Renee Morgan’s skills.
Team Blue’s commander: "What do you think of her abilities?"
As a commander, if he wasn’t confident, he couldn’t just let his team take risks.
Jay Monroe remembered what happened that morning.
The girl’s clear eyes held a ripple of water as she looked up at him, seriously, as if answering some very strict question, in a very serious tone: "Trained... a few hours?"
Jay Monroe: "..." What the hell—a few hours of training? And she got picked as a sniper?
"Ahem..." Jay Monroe snapped back, awkwardly using his serious tone: "Commander, I’ve never seen Renee Morgan in action. But if she was chosen for the sniper spot, I’m guessing she’s got to have solid skills."
Hearing Jay Monroe’s "determined" tone, Team Blue’s commander suddenly felt a bit guilty—he always told others not to judge Renee Morgan by her looks, but wasn’t he doing the same?
Jay Monroe patiently waited for dozens of seconds, soon hearing the switch-cut sound on the comms, then Team Blue’s commander’s voice: "Renee Morgan, listen up..."
Renee Morgan was still dutifully patrolling her post. After receiving the order, she replied with a clear "understood," packed up her sniper rifle, and quickly ran downstairs with it on her back.
The small patch of woods Jay Monroe was in had several buildings nearby. The assaulter team sent to rescue him had lost four guys, only four left, who had taken cover in a nearby multi-story building, too afraid to leave.
Everyone now knew just how deadly Team Red’s sniper was. If they stuck their heads out, getting popped was a real risk.
But that couldn’t last. If the enemy launched a sweep with an assault team, they’d all be trapped like dumplings.
They were just calling the commander, about to abandon the rescue plan and get out when...
The commander spoke calmly: "Everyone, hold on. I’ve already sent sniper Renee Morgan to rescue Jay Monroe."
The four assaulters glanced at each other—Renee Morgan?
The chick?
It wasn’t that they looked down on girls—send a tougher-looking chick and they wouldn’t be so... doubtful.
Renee Morgan was just too good looking, easily rivaling stars on screen. Thin and pale, especially those clear, bright eyes—they’d almost hypnotize you. Anyone would blush just glancing at her. She sure didn’t look like she’d have much skill.
Still, the commander’s orders were law—they couldn’t disobey.
"Get back! Are you trying to get yourself killed? If you’ve got your head out there and there’s an ambush, you could get popped any second." At the inner window on the third floor, a man grabbed another teammate by the collar, yelling.
"Hey, hey, let go, let go, you’re strangling me." The teammate finally wriggled free, gasping, pointing at the window: "I... heard something. Just wanted to see what’s going on..."
Something?
Did Team Red send people for the sweep already?
The other three looked uneasy. If it was out of sniper sight and Team Red sent an assault team, things could get hairy. Ignoring the danger, they rushed to the window to check.
Sticking their heads out carefully, rifles ready to fire, they...
Saw, in the next instant, a dark shadow leap in from outside the window, legs landing on the front guy’s wrist, knocking the rifle away.
"Team Blue?" Renee Morgan’s sharp gaze landed on their uniforms.
The others, rifles still raised, recognized her and stared, surprised: "Renee Morgan? How’d you get up here?"
Renee Morgan confirmed they were allies and quickly released the wrist she was standing on, waving the rope at her waist: "Climbed up with the rope."
The others smacked their heads, gave her a thumbs up.
Renee Morgan glanced at them: "You guys have ropes, too?"
She remembered their gear was pretty much the same—assault teams had ropes as well.
They were trapped upstairs, with the front door and stair window exposed to sniper fire. This window, though, faced away from sniper sight—sliding down the rope would get them out...
But they were still here. Weren’t they just waiting to be surrounded?
Renee Morgan’s question made all four freeze. Just a moment ago, they’d been doubting her skills, and now...
"Ahem... Our mission is to rescue Jay Monroe, help him escape, so we didn’t bail..." Faces red, but they answered honestly.
Their reasoning was sound, but deep down, they knew it was kind of dumb.
After Hugh popped four of their heads, they realized they were outmatched and couldn’t save Jay Monroe.
They were up against Team Red’s sniper, Hugh—a real threat.
In this situation, they should have escaped immediately, not waited around to be slaughtered and let Team Red wrap them up.
If the enemy sent an assault team to sweep, combined with sniper attacks, survival would be damn hard.
Renee Morgan didn’t dwell on it, instead asking after their current situation.
Jay Monroe was still in the woods; the building’s door and stair window were both exposed to Team Red’s sniper sight. They weren’t sure of the sniper’s exact location.
Renee Morgan slung her sniper rifle, walked to the window facing the entrance, found a hidden spot, and started observing the surrounding abandoned buildings.
She quickly locked onto their position—a small building right in the center, where two black dots peeked from a hidden corner: gun barrels.
