CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows
CHAPTER 91: THE WEIGHT OF THE CROWN CORE
The heavy iron-reinforced doors of the lower training cavern groaned open, admitting two figures into the quiet, damp space.
Patriarch Vane walked with slow, measured steps, his dark-crystal armor casting faint violet reflections across the granite floor. Beside him moved Old Bones, his posture slightly hunched, his sharp, dark eyes scanning every inch of the yard before settling on the fourteen-year-old boy sitting cross-legged in the center.
Orven bowed deeply as the Patriarch approached, stepping back to give the two elders room.
Caius opened his eyes. He did not rush to stand, nor did his expression betray any surprise. Inside his soul sea, the liquid obsidian sphere of his Crown Core rotated smoothly, its Singularity Pull maintaining a tight, impenetrable boundary around his spiritual frame.
"You look well for someone who claimed to have a 'tiny affinity,'" Old Bones rasped, a thin, crooked smile touching his wrinkled lips. He folded his arms inside his threadbare sleeves, his gaze lingering on the hairline fractures etched into the solid granite wall behind Caius. "Though I see you've been breaking Elder Orven's stone instead of your own pathways."
"The core adapted faster than expected," Caius replied softly, meeting the old assassin's eyes.
"Adapted?" Old Bones chuckled, a dry, coughing sound. "You tricked the Mage Society into sending an instructor by playing the modest ward, then tore through two pillars of high spatial magic in a matter of days. You didn't adapt, boy. You hunted the magic down and took it."
Patriarch Vane stepped forward, stopping ten paces from Caius. The quiet aura of absolute authority surrounding the dark elf leader filled the cavern, but Caius’s obsidian core passively absorbed the ambient pressure, preventing the weight from pressing down on his shoulders.
Vane’s violet eyes flared with quiet approval. "Orven informed me of your Void-Stride. He also claims you are ready for the third and final pillar."
Caius stood up, his posture loose and balanced. "Visual Inversion."
"Visual Inversion is not merely delaying a light footprint," Vane said, his voice echoing off the damp stone. "Weak mages use it to cast static mirages to confuse a blade. But a true Shadowblade uses it to manipulate the target's perception of intent. If an enemy cannot pinpoint where your killing intent originates, their defensive barriers will react to the wrong vector entirely."

Vane glanced toward Old Bones. "Show him."
Old Bones sighed, uncrossing his arms. In a fraction of a second, the old assassin's demeanor shifted. The harmless, frail old man vanished; in his place stood a presence as cold and lethal as a drawn blade.
Old Bones took a single step forward.
To Caius's physical eyes, Old Bones was advancing directly from the left. But through the 2nd Thread (Inner Sight) of his Eye of the Loom, Caius saw the dark mana surrounding the old assassin shift. Old Bones had detached his killing intent from his physical body, projecting a ghost-vector to the left while his physical footwork silently closed the distance from the right.
It was a total decoupling of sight, sound, and lethal intent.
Caius didn't flinch. Instead of relying solely on his physical sight or Inner Sight, he activated his 3rd Thread: Fate Sight.
The underlying pathways of the world sharpened into crystalline clarity. Through Fate Sight, the delayed light footprint and the projected ghost-intent were immediately rendered as hollow, translucent threads. The true, dense line of Old Bones's actual physical mass cut through the shadow seam on the right, completely exposed.
Caius flared his Crown Core.
He did not just execute Visual Inversion—he inverted his own core's Singularity Pull. He projected a false, razored intent three paces ahead of himself while wrapping his physical body in a layer of absolute light-absorbing darkness.
SNAP!
The glass-shattering pop of Void-Stride tore through the cavern.
Old Bones’s eyes widened slightly as his strike hit empty air. The visual decoy Caius had left behind shattered into fine obsidian mist, while the real Caius materialized out of the dark shadow behind Old Bones's right flank, his hand stopping a hair's breadth from the old assassin's spine.
Silence fell over the cavern.
Old Bones stood motionless for two full seconds before dropping his combat stance. He turned his head, looking back at Caius with a look of profound, raspy amusement.
"You visual-inverted the spatial collapse itself," Old Bones muttered, shaking his head. "I spent forty years mastering intent-decoupling, and you used your core density to fake the entry point of a realm-fold."
Patriarch Vane walked toward them, his boots clicking rhythmically against the stone. The dark elf lord looked down at the fourteen-year-old human, the violet glow in his eyes burning brighter than ever.
"The Dual Sovereigns gave you two years until the Trial of Fate," Vane said, his voice dropping into a low, resonant register that carried absolute conviction. "The high houses think they are granting a execution date to a child. They do not know what is being forged beneath this mountain."
Vane extended his hand, pointing toward the upper corridors.
"Master this fusion, Caius. Shrink your exit noise to nothing. When you step into the arena on your sixteenth year, you will not just win your freedom—you will shatter their master Shadowblade, demand the royal decree, and pull my son out of the Moon Palace."
