CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows
CHAPTER 92: THE COMPLETE TRIAD
Silence held the cavern floor. Where Caius had stood just moments prior, there was now only the bare, torch-lit expanse of damp granite.
Orven took a sharp step forward, his eyes straining as he swept his gaze across the empty floor. There was no telltale drop in temperature, no ozone hum, and no spatial ripple. To standard sensory mages, the space was entirely vacant.
Patriarch Vane remained still, his violet eyes glowing with a quiet, intense focus. Beside him, Old Bones leaned slightly on his heel, a low, rasping chuckle bubbling up from his chest.
"He didn't just bend the light," Old Bones muttered, his dark eyes narrowing as he tracked a microscopic, near-imperceptible drag in the dust near the left cavern wall. "He used that dense core of his to eat the reflections entirely. The boy is standing three paces off your left shoulder, Orven."
The moment the words left the old assassin's mouth, the visual distortion dissolved.
Caius materialized smoothly out of thin air, his physical frame emerging without a single sound or breath of displaced wind. His pale eyes were calm, his posture relaxed, and the thin skin of liquid obsidian mana covering his clothes quietly trickled back through his pores, returning to the liquid sphere rotating within his soul sea.
"The light-absorption is stable," Caius said, looking at Patriarch Vane. "By locking the visual inversion to the core's passive pull, it requires almost zero active focus once established."
A case of content theft: this narrative is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.
Orven looked between Caius and the Patriarch, his raspy voice tight with lingering disbelief. "To master Visual Inversion normally takes years of refined mana control—of balancing optical distortion while maintaining physical movement. He forced the ambient light to collapse inward using pure core density."
Patriarch Vane stepped forward, stopping directly in front of Caius. The stern dark elf leader looked down at the fourteen-year-old human, the violet glow in his eyes burning with absolute, unwavering conviction.
"The three pillars are complete," Vane said, his voice deep and echoing off the vaulted stone ceiling like rolling thunder. "Construct density, Spatial Distortion, and Visual Inversion. You possess the foundational triad of the high dark arts."
Vane placed a heavy, runic-clad hand on Caius’s shoulder, his grip unyielding.
"The blood-feud clans of the Moon Court believe they bought themselves two years to prepare an execution," Vane said softly, a sharp, unyielding edge entering his tone. "They expect to face a human boy hiding behind House Vel'drin's protection. They do not know that every day you spend in this cavern, you grow into something capable of shattering their elite Shadowblades."
Caius met the Patriarch's gaze, his heart beating steadily.
"When your sixteenth name day arrives and you step onto the floor of the Trial of Fate, you will not simply survive," Vane declared, his violet eyes flaring with absolute purpose. "You will crush their champion, claim your victory before the Dual Sovereigns, and enforce the royal decree that breaks Sereth out of the Moon Palace."
Old Bones folded his arms back into his threadbare sleeves, a dark, raspy grin spreading across his wrinkled face. "Two years to turn a 'tiny affinity' into an absolute nightmare. The dark elf realm isn't going to know what hit them."
