CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows
CHAPTER 90: THE PATRIARCH'S CALCULATIONS
The air in the upper sanctum hummed with an oppressive, heavy resonance. Luminescent violet crystals hung suspended from the high ceiling, casting long, sharp shadows over the polished obsidian floor.
At the far end of the hall sat Patriarch Vane of House Vel'drin. His glowing violet eyes were calm, but his mind traced back through the memory of Old Bones's report from weeks ago.
A tiny affinity.
Vane remembered the report Old Bones had brought him after Caius asked for basic magic instruction. Old Bones hadn't been fooled for a second—the old assassin had grumbled that Caius was simply hiding the true extent of his talent behind a mask of modesty, knowing full well the human boy absorbed techniques with an unsettling, dangerous speed. Caius knew his own mind, knew how rapidly his core adapted to magic, and had given them just enough truth to get an instructor into his yard.
Now, Orven knelt ten paces below the throne dais, his dark robes scorched at the hem, his face painted with the gray exhaustion of a mage whose spatial defenses had been completely shattered.
"He didn't just learn the fundamentals, My Lord," Orven whispered, his raspy voice trembling with a chaotic mix of awe and fear. "He collapsed twenty paces of real-space on his first attempt. He fused spatial folding directly into shadow-stepping to create Void-Stride. And today... he projected a moving Visual Inversion forward while striding through the shadow seam behind me."
Silence fell over the sanctum, thick and heavy.
A slow, rare smile broke across Patriarch Vane’s stern, ivory-carved face—not one of suspicion, but of deep, calculated satisfaction.

"Old Bones called it from the start," Vane murmured softly, his fingers tapping rhythmically against the armrest of his dark-crystal throne. "He knew the boy was hiding his true speed behind that quiet mask of modesty. The old assassin saw right through him."
Vane slowly stood up, his long dark cloak cascading around him like liquid shadow. He did not call for guards. He did not order Caius to be restricted. Instead, an intense, ambitious light flared in his violet eyes.
"Patriarch?" Orven asked cautiously, looking up from the cold floor. "Should we restrict his training? If the rival houses discover his rapid growth—"
"If the rival houses find out, let them tremble," Vane interrupted, his voice echoing through the sanctum like distant thunder. "You see a dangerous anomaly, Orven. I see the key to breaking my son's chains."
Orven caught his breath.
"Sereth remains bound by the decree of the Dual Sovereigns high within the Moon Palace," Vane said, his voice dropping into a low, heavy register. "As his father, I am permitted to visit his cell, but my hands are tied by the realm's highest laws. No political pressure, no ancestral authority of House Vel'drin can grant him his freedom. Only one path remains open."
Vane stepped down from the dais with slow, deliberate strides, his gaze fixing toward the heavy iron doors.
"When Caius reaches sixteen, the Trial of Fate will begin in the Moon Court," Vane continued, a sharp, unyielding grin touching his pale lips. "The blood-feud clans and their chosen Shadowblade expect an easy slaughter of a human outsider. They do not realize what is being forged in our lower grounds."
Vane stopped beside Orven, looking down at the elder mage with absolute conviction.
"The Absolute Moon decreed it herself," Vane whispered, his violet eyes blazing. "If Caius survives and defeats their chosen master Shadowblade, Sereth is granted absolute freedom from his clan obligations, his Shadowblade oaths, and all claims placed upon him by the realm. Old Bones thought he was keeping a modest ward alive—he was guarding the savior of my house."
Vane turned toward the corridor leading to the lower grounds. "I am going down to the training yard myself. I want to see this 'Void-Stride' with my own eyes."
