CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows

CHAPTER 30: THE SHADOW WARRIOR

  • Next Chapter

The following morning, the tribe gathered once more under a pale gray sky. News of the previous duel had traveled like wildfire through the northern forest, drawing warriors from neighboring settlements to witness the legend of the young human who moved through the battlefield like black mist. Caius stood near the edge of the clearing as Rokan approached, his heavy footsteps crunching against the frost-rimed grass. In his open palm rested another bead, stained a deep, arterial red.

"You earned this," Rokan said.

Caius accepted the token, examining its smooth surface before weaving it into the leather bracelet on his wrist. Three beads now hung side by side, each marking a milestone in his brutal passage through the northern frontier. The white bead stood for his first survival. The blue bead marked his second trial. Now, the red bead commemorated the death duel that had shaken the camp.

Yet the bracelet was no longer the only reason eyes followed him across the camp. The crowd had swelled overnight, a dense ring of spectators filled with a volatile mix of awe, skepticism, and quiet hostility. They muttered among themselves, casting sideways glances at the boy with the dual blades and the phantom-like speed. Sereth remained detached from the murmurs, leaning against a weathered pine near the clearing perimeter, his expression unreadable as he watched Caius prepare.

The tribe chief stepped forward, raising his staff to quiet the assembly. "The next challenger has arrived."

A heavy silence fell over the clearing. From the edge of the dense evergreens, a lone figure emerged, draped from head to toe in a cloak of heavy black fur. A deep hood shadowed his face, leaving only a pair of cold, calculating eyes visible in the dim light. Unlike the brute strength of previous opponents, this warrior carried a pair of slender short blades, their edges catching the faint dawn light.

Caius narrowed his eyes. Another dual-wielder. But there was something fundamentally different about this man. He moved with an absolute absence of sound, his boots seeming to glide over the earth without disturbing a single blade of grass.

The chief looked between them. "This warrior comes from the Shadow Tribe."

A sharp intake of breath rippled through the crowd. Sereth shifted slightly, his calm exterior tightening just a fraction. He knew the reputation of the Shadow Tribe. They practiced ancient arts of sorcery and assassination, treating combat not as a test of brute endurance, but as a lethal art of deception. They struck from blind spots, bending light and shadow to their will.

Without a word of warning, the cloaked warrior drew his blades. Caius mirrored the motion, slipping both short swords from their scabbards and lowering himself into a balanced stance.

For several long breaths, neither combatant moved. The air grew still, heavy with anticipation.

Then they moved as one.

Steel screamed against steel in an instant clash of sparks. The Shadow warrior struck with dizzying speed, his twin blades weaving a web of flashing arcs. Caius met every blow, stepping inside a wild flurry to parry with his left blade while using his right to deflect a vicious thrust aimed at his ribs. The stranger twisted away with fluid grace, rotating his body to launch a counter-attack from an impossible angle.

The tale has been illicitly lifted; should you spot it on Amazon, report the violation.

Caius ducked beneath the sweep, his boots pivoting on the packed earth as their blades locked together in a shower of white-hot sparks. Neither could establish dominance, their movements a synchronized dance of counter and riposte.

Caius activated his Inner Sight.

The veil of the physical world dissolved, revealing the warrior energetic blueprint. His mana core was compact, smaller than the veteran core, but spinning with hyper-dense control. It pulsed rhythmically, channeling currents of power smoothly through his limbs.

Suddenly, the warrior dissolved into thin air.

A collective gasp escaped the crowd. Whispers broke out along the perimeter as tribesmen craned their necks to find the missing fighter. The secret sorcery of the Shadow Tribe, legendary and rarely witnessed outside their hidden valleys, had been deployed.

The invisible warrior glided silently through the space behind Caius.

Caius remained perfectly still, relying on the refined perception of his sight to track the faint thermal and mana trails cutting through the air. The blade materialized from the empty dark behind his shoulder, whistling toward his neck.

Caius whipped around at the exact fraction of a second, bringing his short sword up to intercept the strike with a violent clang.

The warrior visible eyes widened in shock.

Before the assassin could retreat into invisibility, Caius counterattacked. His second blade flashed forward like a striking viper. The Shadow warrior twisted desperately to the side, but the edge still sliced through his heavy fur cloak, carving a deep, bleeding gash across his shoulder. He stumbled backward, his breath catching as the illusion broke entirely.

The clearing erupted in a roar of astonishment. The invisible hunter had been dragged into the light.

Clutching his bleeding shoulder, the warrior hissed an incantation. Mana flared around him like dark smoke. His body blurred violently, fracturing into multiple identical forms that rippled outward. One figure split into three, and three multiplied into five. Within seconds, five identical warriors clad in black fur surrounded Caius, their blades drawn and ready to strike.

The tribesmen stared in disbelief. Even Sereth leaned forward, his gaze sharp and analytical as the Shadow Tribe displayed another of its forbidden techniques.

The illusions moved in perfect unison, circling Caius and keeping their weapons leveled at his chest. The real warrior was hidden among the duplicates, masked by overlapping strands of illusionary mana.

Caius closed his eyes for a split second, then opened them with Inner Sight burning at its peak.

The doppelgangers were convincing, but their energetic signatures were hollow, casting distorted ripples through his vision. He ignored the phantoms entirely, turning his focus toward a single core that burned with true, solid intensity amid the decoys.

The real warrior.

Realizing his deception had failed, the true warrior abandoned the illusions and lunged forward with both blades raised.

Caius was already moving. He slipped right past the dissolving doppelgangers, his body performing the Flow Step with effortless precision. He closed the distance before the assassin could complete his strike.

His first sword knocked the warrior left defense aside. His second blade followed instantly, driving straight through the opening.

Both blades pierced cleanly through the warrior chest.

The remaining illusions winked out of existence like dying embers. The warrior went entirely rigid, his breathing stalling.

Caius slowly withdrew his blades, wiping the dark steel clean against the grass as the defeated man collapsed into the dust.

The clearing fell profoundly silent. The assembled warriors stared at the boy with a new kind of terror in their eyes. What had started as a simple human child facing trial had evolved past reason. He had beaten a fierce brawler, bested a seasoned veteran, and now unraveled the dark sorcery of an elite Shadow Tribe assassin.

In the quiet of the morning forest, a new name took root among the tribes, whispered like a dark omen across the wind.

The Black Mist Warrior.
