CHAPTER 31: THE LAST BEAD

The final duel was held at noon. By then, the clearing had swelled far beyond its previous bounds, ringed by warriors from neighboring tribes drawn by the spreading legends of the Black Mist Warrior. Yet no laughter rippled through the gathered crowd. No one had come simply to test the strange human boy anymore.

The warrior who stepped into the center of the clearing was an old man, his leather and fur garments reinforced with heavy plates across his chest and shoulders. His body was a tapestry of ancient scars, some faded almost into the grain of his skin. His hair was streaked with silver, yet his posture remained as rigid as a spear shaft and his eyes burned with lethal clarity.

Caius immediately sensed the profound difference. The warrior's mana core blazed with a deep, emerald radiance, dense and overwhelmingly powerful. It was infinitely more refined than anything Caius had encountered before.

Sereth watched the old warrior enter the clearing, recognition flickering across his features. "This is one of the warriors who fought your father twenty years ago."

The old man stopped several paces away, his gaze locked onto Caius. "I was there when Cullum Macrae entered our forest," his voice was heavy with the gravel of age. "I was one of those who tried to stop him."

Caius remained silent.

"I survived." The warrior touched a puckered scar running across his abdomen. "Your father nearly killed me. I spent a full year recovering from the wounds he gave me." He looked at Caius with an expression devoid of petty hatred or blind fear. It was anchored entirely in grim resolve. "Twenty years have passed. And now I stand before his son."

Caius slowly drew both of his short swords. The warrior's gaze flicked to Nightdancer resting on the boy's back. "Your father left a bloodline behind. The chief has commanded me to end it."

Caius narrowed his eyes. "You mean me."

"I mean you."

The clearing plunged into a tense, suffocating silence. The chief raised his hand high. "This is the final duel. Fight."

The old warrior moved with terrifying velocity. The green mana surging through his limbs reinforced every muscle and tendon, turning his body into a coiled spring of destructive power. His weapon plummeted downward with earth-shattering force.

Caius crossed both blades to intercept, but the sheer kinetic impact drove him skidding backward across the dirt. The veteran pressed the advantage instantly, sweeping his broad blade in a horizontal arc aimed at Caius's ribs. Caius twisted his spine, the razor edge passing a hair's breadth from his scaled leather armor.

Caius countered with a dual strike, but the veteran anticipated the rhythm, turning his weapon with casual mastery to bat the blades aside. Steel shrieked against steel, the sound echoing sharply through the clearing.

Caius activated his Inner Sight. The old warrior's physical form dissolved into a luminous map of emerald energy. Mana circulated through his muscles with absolute, ruthless efficiency, leaving virtually no wasted movement. Caius finally understood how this man had survived his father's wrath two decades ago. He was not just strong; he was a master of economy and timing.

The veteran attacked again, a relentless sequence of strikes. Caius parried the first, blocked the second, and was forced to retreat under the weight of the third. The old warrior dipped low, sweeping a vicious low strike toward Caius's shins. Caius vaulted into the air, but before he could touch the ground, the veteran pivoted and thrust his weapon upward. Caius contorted his body mid-air, the blade slicing thin air beneath him before he landed several paces away.

The crowd murmured in astonishment.

The veteran gave him no quarter, his green mana flaring as he charged forward.

Caius invoked the Flow Step. His body felt weightless, mana flooding his nerves to sharpen his reflexes. He blurred past the first strike, redirected the second, and danced around the warrior's flank.

Caius struck from the left. Blocked. He slashed from the right. Blocked. Left, right, high, low, a whirlwind of steel that tested the veteran's defenses to their absolute limit. The old man blocked every blow, but the strain began to etch itself into the lines of his face and the slowing tempo of his parries.

The veteran was experienced and lethal, but Caius was faster.

With a grunt of effort, the old warrior unleashed a massive downward smash. Caius sidestepped cleanly as the blade embedded itself shallowly in the earth.

The opening was instantaneous.

Caius moved with the speed of falling water, the Flow Step carrying him into the veteran's blind spot. His first blade struck the man's shoulder. The warrior staggered, swinging blindly, but Caius was already behind him, his second blade pressing close.

The veteran spun around with astonishing recovery speed, raising his weapon to block, and forced Caius into a head-on clash of physical power. Their blades locked together. The old warrior pushed forward, his superior muscle density and decades of tempered strength slowly driving Caius backward. Caius's boots carved trenches into the earth.

He was only fourteen. His body had not yet reached its physical apex.

Yet Caius had something the veteran could not match. He saw the future through the flow of mana. He watched the emerald current gather in the man's shoulder joint, charting the exact trajectory of the incoming strike before the muscles even twitched.

He waited until the precise heartbeat.

As the blade lunged forward, Caius vanished from the path of destruction. His first short sword sliced cleanly across the warrior's side. The old man gasped, spinning to retaliate, but Caius was already positioned behind him. His second blade flicked out, stopping a hair's breadth from the man's throat.

The veteran froze.

Caius stood before him, chest heaving, blood smearing the dark steel of his weapons. He looked past the defeated warrior, locking his gaze onto the chiefs and the silent sea of tribesmen lining the perimeter.

"Warriors of the northern forest," Caius called out, his voice ringing clear and steady across the clearing. "Will you continue this feud?"

Absolute silence met his words. The blade remained steady against the veteran's throat.

"Will this continue even to my son?" Caius pressed on, his eyes sweeping from one chief to another. "Will I continue to slay the warriors of your tribes generation after generation? Declare it now. For if this feud continues, then I will declare the northern forest my enemy."

The chiefs stared at him in stunned awe. He was only a boy of fourteen, yet he stood covered in the blood of their finest fighters, having unraveled every trial they threw at him. Every leader in attendance recognized the horrifying truth. This was not the peak of Caius Macrae. It was merely the prologue. What would this child become when he reached full manhood?

The heavy silence stretched until one of the senior chiefs slowly stood from his seat.

"Enough," the word rolled across the clearing like thunder. The chief looked toward the other elders. "This feud has continued long enough." He turned his gaze back to Caius. "Cullum Macrae is dead. His son stands before us, and he has fairly defeated the warriors we sent against him."

The chief's expression softened into solemn respect. "Let the feud end. From this day forward, Caius Macrae, son of Cullum Macrae, shall walk unhindered through the northern forest."

One by one, the other chiefs lowered their weapons in silent agreement. The blood feud was officially broken.

Caius slowly lowered his blades and sheathed them at his side. For the first time since entering the brutal wilderness, the path ahead was clear of blades waiting for his blood.

Behind him, Sereth watched in silence. He had sworn a vow to Cullum that he would protect the boy until his sixteenth year. But watching him stand victorious under the canopy of the northern pines, Sereth realized a profound truth. Caius would not merely survive his journey. He was already carving his own legend into the world.
