CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows
CHAPTER 29: BLACK MIST
The seasoned warrior moved first. His long sword came free in a single smooth motion, the broad blade catching the pale morning light as he stepped into the clearing. Unlike the twin axes of the previous warrior, his weapon demanded greater control and reach. He held it with both hands, the point angled toward Caius as he settled into a stance shaped by years of battle.
Caius raised his two short swords and activated his Inner Sight.
The warrior's mana core immediately revealed itself. It burned a brilliant red within his body, far brighter and denser than the cores of the younger warriors Caius had faced. Mana flowed from the core through his arms and into the long sword, gathering around the steel until a thin red radiance appeared along the blade.
Caius's eyes narrowed. The warrior suddenly lunged.
The long sword swept toward him with enough force to split through his guard. Caius crossed both blades and caught the strike, but the impact drove him backward across the earth. His boots dug into the ground as he struggled to absorb the crushing force.
The warrior did not give him time to recover. Another strike came, followed instantly by another. The long sword moved with frightening precision, each attack carrying the weight of the warrior's body and the destructive force of his red mana. Caius blocked one strike with his left blade and redirected another with his right, but the sheer difference in reach forced him back step by step.
He was fast. Faster than the warrior had expected. But he was still not strong enough.
Caius had not yet reached fifteen. His body was still growing, his muscles yet to attain their full density. His physical foundation could not match that of a seasoned veteran who had spent decades tempering his flesh through relentless combat.
The long sword struck again. Caius twisted aside at the last fraction of a second. The red blade passed close enough to his face that he felt its scorching heat against his skin. He countered with both swords, but the veteran turned his weapon with casual mastery and knocked the attack away.
Caius was forced back again, his breath hitching. The tribesmen watching the duel began to murmur, a low, restless sound rippling through the crowd. The seasoned warrior had expected the boy to be skilled, but skill alone could not bridge the Abyss of raw physical strength.
The warrior stepped forward and swung with both hands in a devastating overhead arc. Caius raised his swords to intercept. The collision drove him to one knee, a sharp spike of pain traveling through his arms and rattling his teeth. His breathing became ragged and heavy. For the first time since the duel began, a cold doubt crept into his mind. Could he actually defeat this man?
Then something moved inside him. At first, it was barely noticeable, a faint stirring deep within the stillness of his mana core. Caius felt it before he understood it. The black core that had remained dormant since devouring the Abyss beast suddenly shifted, and something primal awakened within its depths.
The sensation was entirely unlike the controlled flow of ordinary mana. It was darker, deeper, and older, carrying the resonance of something that had always existed beneath his skin. The black energy began to untwine and move.

Across the clearing, Sereth suddenly straightened. He could sense it. The strange presence he had noticed before was no longer flickering between moments; it was expanding with terrifying speed.
"What..." Sereth's eyes widened. He could not see the true nature of Caius's core, but even without that sight, the sudden shift in the atmosphere was unmistakable. The air around the boy darkened, absorbing the morning light.
The seasoned warrior noticed it as well, his expression tightening. Caius rose slowly from one knee, the black mist coiling around his limbs.
The warrior swung.
Caius moved. For an instant, his physical form seemed to dissolve into black smoke. The long sword cut cleanly through the empty space where Caius had stood a heartbeat before.
The warrior immediately spun and struck again, but Caius was already there. His short sword caught the long blade, knocking it aside, while his second blade whipped around to force an immediate defense.
The transformation stunned everyone watching. Caius no longer moved like a boy struggling against an insurmountable wall. He flowed around the long sword like water around a stone, blocking, parrying, and slipping past each lethal strike by the narrowest possible margin. The black energy surrounding his movements appeared and vanished so quickly that the tribesmen could barely follow him with their eyes. To them, Caius had become a phantom that refused to be pinned down.
Sereth watched with growing disbelief. This was not simply the Flow Step. Caius had somehow fused the technique with an entirely alien force, something Sereth had never taught him.
The warrior roared in frustration and brought his long sword down with all his strength. Caius caught the heavy strike between his two blades. The ground beneath his feet cracked from the violent impact. For a moment, the two remained locked together, a clash of raw red mana and swirling black shadow.
Then Caius saw it. The opening.
The warrior's weight had shifted too far forward with the momentum of his heavy swing. His mana was concentrated heavily in his arms and blade, leaving his lower body exposed.
Caius moved before the veteran could recover his footing. The Flow Step carried him forward in a blur. His first blade struck from the left, and as the warrior twisted to defend, Caius vanished from his line of sight, reappearing instantly at a new angle. His second blade came from the opposite side.
The warrior desperately turned his weapon to intercept, but Caius was already shifting again. The black energy flowed around his limbs like liquid night, carrying him across the warrior's blind spot while his blades struck from multiple directions. The seasoned warrior attempted to track him, but every reaction came a fraction too late.
Caius's first sword sliced through his outer defense. His second blade followed instantly. The warrior staggered backward, his breath catching.
Caius stepped well inside the reach of the long sword, his blades crossing in a decisive final strike.
The warrior froze. For a heartbeat, neither moved.
Then the seasoned warrior's long sword slipped from his numb fingers and clattered against the earth. He collapsed to his knees, then tipped forward onto the dirt.
The clearing fell completely silent. Caius stood over him, breathing heavily, blood staining both of his short swords. The black energy that had swirled around him was already gone, his strange core falling silent once more as though it had never awakened.
Around him, the barbarian warriors stared in stunned silence. They had expected a brutal, hard-fought duel, but they had witnessed something beyond comprehension.
Sereth's eyes remained fixed on the boy. He had seen Caius fight many times, but this was different. For a brief, terrifying moment, Caius had not looked like a young human warrior at all. He had looked like a shadow carved from the battlefield itself, and Sereth could not shake the lingering conviction that whatever slept inside Caius's black core had just taken its very first breath.
