CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows

CHAPTER 168: THE SPARK IN THE HEARTH

Deep within the innermost chamber of the Solarian war pavilion, protected by three concentric circles of warding runes, High Lord Lorien sat cross-legged upon a raised dais. Outside, the night wind howled across the central steppes, but inside the tent, the air was suffocatingly hot, thick with the scent of ozone and scorched silk.

Floating in the air before him was the Obsidian Crystal Bead, along with the blood-stained leather slip containing the runic routes of the Moon Flame Art.

Lorien closed his golden eyes. For nearly eighty years, his solar core had remained frozen at the absolute peak of the Grandmaster realm. No matter how many sacred elixirs he consumed, no matter how many decades he spent meditating beneath the divine light of Mount Eldoria, his pathways had refused to expand. The Solarian Royal Court praised his unshakeable foundation, but Lorien knew the truth: he was stagnant.

And stagnation, to a lord of the Sun, was a fate worse than death.

"A simple inversion of the focal array..." Lorien murmured to himself, reciting the translated runic routes from the slip. "Allowing the condensed energy to flow backward through the secondary meridian, incinerating the accumulated calcification..."

His proud soul recoiled slightly at the thought of channeling dark energy, but his blinding ambition quickly smothered the hesitation. He was High Lord Lorien. His solar mana was absolute; it would burn away any minor dark residue long before it could taint his soul.

Extending his hand, Lorien pulled the Obsidian Crystal Bead into his palm and closed his fingers around it.

He activated the Moon Flame Art.

SHRRRRK!

An explosive, intoxicating wave of pure, condensed energy erupted straight from the bead, surging into his arms and flooding his main solar pathways. Unlike the slow, agonizing trickle of ordinary cultivation, this energy moved like liquid fire. Lorien gasped as the internal black flame ignited within his meridians, aggressively scouring away eighty years of stubborn, stagnant core buildup in a matter of seconds.

CRACK.

Stolen from its rightful author, this tale is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.

A sound like snapping glass echoed within his soul. His solar core expanded, drinking in the purified energy with violent hunger. A blinding aura of golden-white fire erupted from Lorien's body, vaporizing his silk robes and shattering the warding runes etched into the floorboards.

He opened his eyes. They burned with a terrifying, incandescent light.

"Magnificent..." Lorien whispered, staring at his glowing hands, his chest heaving with manic exhilaration. "An entire decade's worth of progress in a single breath! The human warlord discovered a divine key, and he wasted it on subterranean filth."

He felt invincible. The bottleneck that had plagued him for nearly a century had softened, shifting closer to a breakthrough than it had ever been.

Yet, deep within the intricate web of his solar pathways, far below the surface of his glowing core, a subtle, microscopic change took place. The inverted flow of the Moon Flame Art left behind an invisible, petrifying residue. It didn't burn or poison him; instead, it slowly fused with his solar channels, making them slightly less flexible and slightly more brittle. His standard solar cultivation method, the foundation of his lifelong strength, imperceptibly ground to a heavy, sluggish crawl.

Lorien felt none of it. He was blinded by the immediate surge of raw power.

Standing up from the shattered dais, he summoned a fresh set of golden-etched mithril plate with a wave of his hand. The black bead in his palm had been completely drained, crumbling into fine gray ash that drifted through his fingers.

His eyes flared with a sudden, insatiable craving. One bead had granted him this much strength. What would ten beads do? What would a hundred do? What would happen if he seized the forge itself?

Lorien pulled open the heavy canvas flaps of his war pavilion, stepping out into the cold night air. Five hundred Sun-Gilded Sentinels and two thousand high elven infantry stood assembled in the staging grounds, their spears and shields glittering beneath the starlight.

"High Lord!" the lead commander saluted, bowing deeply. "The vanguard is ready to scout the valley."

"Cancel the scouts," Lorien declared, his voice booming across the encampment like thunder, carrying a terrifying new resonance that made the surrounding officers tremble. "We waste no more time with small skirmishes. Sound the war horns! Bring up the sun-breaker catapults and assemble the holy arrays!"

He pointed his golden broadsword toward the dark horizon, where the jagged silhouette of the Obsidian Citadel loomed against the sky.

"Full march upon the Citadel!" Lorien bellowed, his golden eyes burning with unholy, addictive greed. "We level their walls by noon, slaughter every dark rat in their trenches, and claim the fortress for Mount Eldoria!"

As the golden horns of the Solarian army shrieked across the steppes, initiating the full-scale march, miles away atop the Citadel battlements, Caius felt the massive pulse of solar mana rippling across the distant hills.

A slow, cold smile spread across Caius's face in the dark.
