CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows

CHAPTER 169: THE BLACK SHELL VANGUARD

  • Next Chapter

The subterranean vaults beneath the Obsidian Citadel stirred with a cold, iron-like efficiency. Along the wide basalt corridors leading up to the surface ramparts, torches burned with dark purple flame, casting jagged shadows against the wet stone walls.

Standing in strict, silent formations were the elites of the Quick Reaction Legion, a blended force of ruthless dark elf Shadowblades from House Vel'drin and hulking barbarian berserkers from the northern steppes. They were men and women who had shed their former allegiances, bound entirely to Caius by blood, iron, and proven loyalty.

Before them, wooden crates bound with iron bands swung open. Inside lay hundreds of sets of the newly perfected Obsidian Chitin Scale Armor.

A massive northern barbarian captain named Torvald stepped forward, his scarred chest bare, staring into the crate with skeptical eyes. He reached down and lifted a complete chest piece. Expecting the bone-crushing weight of black plate, he blinked in utter disbelief as his arms effortlessly raised the armor.

"What is this magic?" Torvald growled, turning the chest piece over in his huge hands. "It feels lighter than boiled leather, like holding a feather."

Beside him, Vanya, the dark elf assassin who had claimed High Captain Caelen's head, ran her slender fingers across fitted pauldrons. She marvelled at the thousands of interlocking obsidian scales, overlapping like dragon skin.

"Put it on, Captain," Old Bones's voice rasped from the dark corridor behind them.

The old assassin stepped into the torchlight, his dark cloak pulled back to reveal his own custom suit of obsidian scales fitted beneath his leather coat.

"Don't let the weight fool you," Old Bones said, a cold smirk crossing his scarred face. "This isn't steel. It is the molted skin of our Sovereign’s evolved Arachne legion, tailored specifically to your frames by the master artisan below. It flows with your movements, but when a blade hits it..."

Old Bones suddenly drew his curved dagger and slashed it with terrifying speed directly at Torvald’s gut.

The barbarian instinctively winced, but before the steel could bite, the soft, flexible scales covering his torso instantly hardened into an impenetrable wall of solid obsidian. CLANG! Sparks flew as Old Bones's dagger bounced off the scales, leaving not even a scratch on the black surface.

Torvald looked down at his stomach, then at Old Bones, a slow, wild grin spreading across his bearded face. "By the gods..."

"It absorbs physical force and completely disperses high-grade magical attacks," Vanya murmured, slipping into her suit. The armor molded perfectly to her athletic frame, hugging her shoulders and joints without restricting a single degree of her agility. "We can use the Flow Step at full speed, without carrying a hundred pounds of iron."

"Every elite warrior in the Quick Reaction Legion gets a set," Old Bones commanded, his pale eyes glinting. "The High Elves are marching into the valley with their radiant sun-blades and heavy armor. They expect to cut through soft flesh and cheap iron. Let us show them what happens when their light hits the black shell."

Within thirty minutes, all three hundred members of the Quick Reaction Legion were fully outfitted. From head to toe, they looked like terrifying phantoms clad in gleaming, jet-black dragon scales, their weapons coated in dark mana.

Above them, the heavy iron portcullis creaked as it rose.

The legion marched out onto the sweeping granite battlements of the Obsidian Citadel, taking their positions along the high parapets just as the first rays of dawn broke over the eastern mountains.

Miles across the central steppe, the horizon burned with a blinding, golden light. Five hundred Sun-Gilded Sentinels and two thousand high elven infantry advanced in flawless, geometric battle lines. Behind them, massive sun-breaker catapults groaned as their enchanted wooden arms were cranked into place, radiating intense solar heat.

At the center of the elven host rode High Lord Lorien. Draped in his radiant golden armor, his eyes burning with the manic, unholy hunger of the Moon Flame Art, he raised his sword toward the Citadel.

High atop the fortress wall, Caius stood in his dark mantle, his violet eyes looking down at the advancing sea of gold. Beside him, the three hundred warriors of the Quick Reaction Legion stood in absolute, terrifying silence, their obsidian scales reflecting the golden rays of the rising sun without absorbing a single speck of light.

Caius rested his hand on the cold stone wall, a quiet, ruthless smile touching his lips.

"They have brought their light," Caius whispered softly. "Open the murder-holes. Let the battle begin."
