CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows
CHAPTER 167: THE GILDED TEMPTATION
Deep within the fortified war pavilion of the Solarian vanguard, High Lord Lorien stood over a stone altar. His radiant solar mana pulsed in rhythmic, angry surges, illuminating the shadowy corners of the tent.
On the altar lay the corpse of an outer-clan dark elf assassin, killed during a failed ambush on the western perimeter. Next to the body sat a small velvet pouch recovered from its vest, along with a thin, blood-stained slip of leather inscribed with dark runic routes.
Two High Elven Sun-Scholars, cloaked in pristine white silk embroidered with solar runes, hovered over the altar with silver diagnostic lenses. One carefully extracted a single Obsidian Crystal Bead using enchanted mithril tongs, while the other examined the captured leather slip.
"Report," Lorien demanded, his voice low and dangerous. "What dark rot or curse were these subterranean savages using to bypass our Sentinels' barriers?"
The lead Sun-Scholar looked up, his eyes wide behind his lenses, trembling not with fear, but with utter bewilderment.
"My Lord... there is no curse," the scholar whispered. "No corruption, no volatile array, no dark mark whatsoever."
Lorien’s golden eyebrows furrowed. "Nonsense. The human warlord provided them with this power."
"Inspect it yourself, High Lord," the scholar urged, placing the bead onto an illuminated solar pedestal.
As the golden light bathed the black sphere, the outer shell softened, revealing what lay within. It was not chaotic dark magic. It was ultra-condensed, pristine mana, so pure and dense that it practically hummed against the air.
"It is a masterwork of energy distillation," the lead scholar breathed in awe, staring at the sphere with visible greed. "Our grand academies in Mount Eldoria haven't produced mana purity of this tier in three centuries."
"And the leather slip?" Lorien snapped, his eyes flicking toward the second scholar.
"It is a cultivation technique, My Lord," the second scholar replied, his voice trembling as he traced the runic diagrams. "They call it the Moon Flame Art. It acts as an internal catalyst. It takes this pure condensed mana and directs it straight through the body's primary channels, incinerating core impurities and forcing an instantaneous breakthrough."

The scholar swallowed hard before continuing. "Our tests show that if a solar archmage were to invert their focal arrays slightly and run our own solar arts through these Moon Flame routes alongside the bead, it could instantly dissolve core bottlenecks that have lasted for decades."
Lorien stared at the bead and the leather slip, his golden eyes flickering wildly.
Arrogant as he was, Lorien had been stuck at the peak of the Grandmaster realm for nearly eighty years. The High Elves Royal Court’s rigid, radiant methods demanded decades of grueling meditation for even a sliver of progress. Yet here, held in the palm of a dead subterranean rat, was a source of pure power and a technique that could break his stagnation in a single night.
"So..." Lorien murmured, a dark, covetous light creeping into his proud gaze. "The human warlord isn't just commanding dark elves. He possesses the secret to condensing raw world-energy into physical form and the formula to force immediate evolution."
"My Lord," the lead scholar cautioned softly. "Should we burn both the slip and the bead?"
"Burn them?" Lorien sneered, snatching the bead and the leather slip with his bare hand. The raw energy seeped into his skin, sending an intoxicating, electrifying jolt straight into his stagnant solar core. His eyes flashed with a sudden, overwhelming hunger. "We take the Citadel not just for the King's mandate, but for this forge and this art. Inform the High Command: any officer who captures these beads intact or secures copy-slips of the Moon Flame Art will be heavily rewarded."
Miles away, high on the granite battlements of the Obsidian Citadel, Caius looked through the Eye of the Loom. Through the mirror's pale light, he watched Lorien pocket the Obsidian Bead and memorize the Moon Flame slip with a look of hidden, desperate desire.
A slow, cold smirk spread across Caius's face.
"They bit," Caius whispered.
Old Bones stepped up beside him, chuckling rasply into his dark mantle. "The High Elves think they found a shortcut to power, My Lord?"
"The High Elves are too proud to believe a human could trap them," Caius said softly, his violet eyes burning with cold calculation. "Lorien thinks he is superior enough to cleanse my energy and adapt the Moon Flame Art for his solar channels. He doesn't realize that without my Obsidian Crown to balance it, practicing those routes will slowly calcify his solar pathways while drastically slowing his original cultivation."
Caius turned away from the mirror, his dark mantle billowing behind him.
"The dark elves are hooked through their ambition," Caius's cold voice echoed in the silent chamber. "And now, the High Elves are hooked through their pride. Let the battle begin."
