CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows
CHAPTER 162: THE EYES IN THE CANOPY
Far beyond the borders of the Solarian Empire, past the rolling central steppes and the desolate outer wastes, lay the eternal, primeval domain of the Silverwood Forest of Mount Eldoria.
Deep within its emerald heart, ancient trees taller than stone spires touched the sky, their colossal roots drinking deep from pristine ley lines that had flowed undisturbed for millennia. There sat an ancient entity, an Arch-Elder whose soul had slumbered in profound harmony with the woodland realm for over three thousand years.
Suddenly, the ancient being opened his eyes. They glowed like pools of molten silver, casting an ethereal illumination across the sacred grove.
Across thousands of leagues, a violent, unnatural ripple had shuddered through the spiritual atmosphere of the continent. It was a dark, suffocating density, a power born not of natural mana, but of cold sovereign authority, refined souls, and terrifying construct arts that defied the natural order.
Who created this abomination?
The Arch-Elder closed his eyes, extending his consciousness outward into the whispering wind. His spiritual essence soared over the vast green ocean of the forest, crossing jagged mountain peaks and sweeping across the windswept central steppes until it halted abruptly above the intimidating ridges of the Black Ridge.
There, perched upon the barren crags of the central steppes, stood the Black Granite Citadel. The Arch-Elder’s spiritual vision pierced the swirling heavy mists, surveying the five thousand hive-linked legionnaires standing in ironclad formation, the towering nine-foot faceless sentinel standing in motionless authority as the Sovereign's Knight Champion, and the dark-haired young man with eyes like burning violets, Caius Macrae.
Yet, when the Arch-Elder attempted to probe deeper, pushing his consciousness beneath the stone foundations of the fortress, he met an abrupt, impenetrable wall. A roiling, absolute shadow blanketed the subterranean depths beneath the citadel, a dense, chaotic void that swallowed spiritual light and distorted perception. Try as he might, the Arch-Elder could not pierce the veil; he could not see what lay below, nor could he fathom the true, sprawling scale of the horrors, vaults, and secret hatcheries buried deep within the earth.
A profound chill gripped the ancient entity's mind. It was a threat unlike anything the continent had seen in generations, a dark Sovereign rising in absolute silence, forging an empire of constructs, death squads, and hidden abysses in the heart of the steppes.
With a slow, heavy exhale, the ancient being recalled his spirit essence and opened his physical eyes within his sacred grove, his silver gaze turbulent with quiet alarm.
"High Lord Lorien," the Arch-Elder’s voice echoed like rustling autumn leaves grinding against ancient stone.
From the shifting shadow of a glowing white willow, a tall figure stepped forward with silent grace. High Lord Lorien was clad in shimmering, leaf-etched mithril armor that caught the filtered sunlight, his emerald eyes sharp as honed glass, and his long silver hair tied neatly behind his aristocratic ears. He bowed deeply, placing his hand over his heart in absolute reverence.

"I am here, Grand Father," Lorien replied, his voice smooth and resonant.
"A plague gathers in the central steppes," the Arch-Elder spoke slowly, raising an ancient wooden staff toward a glowing scrying orb floating in the center of the grove. The orb shifted, projecting the dark battlements of the citadel and the terrifying silhouette of the Knight Champion before dissolving into fleeting visions of the Solarian royal capital. "A dark seed has taken root. This human threat must be nipped in the bud before it grows powerful enough to swallow the world."
High Lord Lorien gazed into the fading light of the orb, his brow furrowing as he felt the lingering residual darkness emanating from the central steppes.
"Assemble a cohort of the Sun-Gilded Sentinels," the Arch-Elder commanded, his voice cold, ancient, and unyielding. "March to the Solarian kingdom. Assist King Alden’s forces. Whatever monster commands that black fortress must not be allowed to take another step."
"It shall be done," Lorien murmured, bowing low before turning to leave the sacred grove.
Meanwhile, leagues away in the opulent royal throne room of the Solarian capital, King Alden paced like a caged beast before his silent, terrified generals. Caius’s arrogant, defiant response lay crumpled upon the polished marble floor.
Without warning, the heavy gilded doors burst open with a resounding crash. The royal guards instantly scrambled to draw their steel, but before a single blade could clear its scabbard, a wave of blinding, pristine solar mana washed over the hall, instantly freezing the guards in their tracks as if caught in solidified amber.
Out of the brilliant, blinding haze stepped High Lord Lorien, flanked by a marching cohort of fifty Sun-Gilded Sentinels. Their polished mithril plate radiated pure, blinding solar light, and their ethereal, intimidating presence caused the human nobles and ministers to drop to their knees in instinctive, shivering terror.
King Alden froze mid-step, his eyes widening as a surge of frantic, desperate glee erupted in his chest. The legendary High Elves of Mount Eldoria, unannounced, unbidden, and untouched by human politics for centuries, had descended directly into his court.
"High Lord Lorien!" King Alden crowed, rushing down the dais, his face flushed with ecstatic, unhinged triumph. "You have arrived! The heavens themselves have answered my cause! With the immortal host of Eldoria beside my imperial legions, that bastard Caius Macrae will be ground into ash! We will crush his dark citadel and parade his severed head through the capital!"
High Lord Lorien stood motionless, his sharp emerald eyes looking down at the babbling, desperate human king with cold, unadulterated disdain. He observed Alden’s trembling hands, his reckless ambition, and the staggering incompetence that had allowed fifty thousand imperial soldiers to be slaughtered without leaving a single survivor.
No wonder the abomination was allowed to fester, Lorien thought, his stomach churning with quiet, icy disgust. It was nurtured entirely by this fool’s monumental incompetence.
Lorien did not offer a bow. He did not even rest a gloved hand on his hilt. He merely spoke, his voice ringing through the silent, frozen hall like falling icicles.
"We are not here for your glory, human," Lorien said coldly, his tone dripping with aristocratic arrogance. "Nor are we here to save your pathetic throne. We are here to eradicate an infection you were too weak and foolish to stop."
King Alden’s ecstatic smile faltered instantly, his face draining of color under the High Lord's piercing gaze. But Lorien turned away, ignoring the king entirely as he looked out toward the distant horizon where the shadowed central steppes lay waiting.
The high elves of Mount Eldoria had officially entered the Great Game.
