CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows

CHAPTER 158: THE KNIGHT CHAMPION

  • Next Chapter

The dawn over the Shattered Steppes broke in hues of bruised violet and ash. Below the looming shadow of the Black Granite Citadel, five thousand warriors of the First Black Obsidian Legion stood in absolute, ironclad formation.

The five cohort squares were drawn up with surgical precision upon the frost-dusted courtyard. Heavy Infantry with their massive tower shields locked, Boar Riders atop their iron-plated beasts, sharp-eyed archers, shamans, and the five hundred Elite Guards stood perfectly silent. Not a weapon clinked, and not a beast grunted. Their shared Hive Link kept five thousand minds beating as a single, vigilant heart, waiting for their master.

High on the grand obsidian balcony, Caius stepped forward, his dark mantle billowing in the cold mountain wind. Beside him stood Old Bones, his pale eyes narrowing as he felt a sudden, crushing shift in the ambient mana surrounding the fortress.

"My Lord..." Old Bones whispered, his hand instinctively gripping his staff. "The air... it has grown heavy."

Caius did not answer with words. Instead, he raised his right hand, his violet eyes flaring with dark authority.

Behind him, the air bled black.

A tear in physical space opened, spilling out a dense, suffocating fog of dark obsidian mana. Heavy, metal-shod footsteps echoed through the courtyard, slow, deliberate, and carrying the terrifying weight of a falling mountain.

Out from the dark rift stepped the nine-foot giant.

Clad in seamless, jagged obsidian plate that seemed to swallow the light, the entity carried its massive war mace rested across one broad pauldron, while its heavy tower shield locked onto its left arm. Beneath its spired black helm was only a hollow void, a cold, faceless sentinel of pure, refined death.

A collective ripple passed through the five thousand legionnaires below. Through the Hive Link, every Orc veteran felt the sheer, overwhelming spiritual pressure emanating from the construct. It was not a mortal warrior, but a living manifestation of their Sovereign's absolute will.

The construct walked to the edge of the balcony, stopping half a step behind Caius. It did not speak, nor did it breathe, yet its presence dominated the entire fortress grounds.

"Look upon him," Caius's voice echoed across the courtyard, amplified by dark mana so that it resounded within the mind of every single soldier. "He was forged in the fires of the obsidian crown, built from the refined essence of ten thousand fallen souls. He knows no fear, feels no fatigue, and obeys no voice save mine."

Caius turned his cold gaze toward the five cohort commanders and the elite guards standing at the head of the formation.

"From this day forth, he is my Knight Champion," Caius declared, his voice cutting through the wind with icy precision. "He stands above the ordinary ranks as the ultimate tip of my spear. When I loose him upon the battlefield, no wall shall hold, and no champion of Solaria shall survive his path."

Old Bones stared at the faceless knight in profound awe, sensing the terrifying harmony between the construct's core and the deep wells of dark energy humming beneath the Citadel. "A personal champion impervious to blade or spell, bound entirely to your absolute authority. You have forged a god of war, My Lord."

At the head of the center cohort square, the chieftain of the Elite Guards slammed his broadsword against his tower shield, breaking the silence with a single, deafening crash.

CLANG!

In a heartbeat, five thousand warriors raised their weapons in unison, their voices roaring as one through the valley.

"HAIL THE SOVEREIGN! HAIL THE KNIGHT CHAMPION!"

On the balcony, the faceless Shadow Knight slowly brought its right fist across its chest, slamming it against its obsidian breastplate in a silent, absolute salute to the legion below.

Caius looked out over his iron war machine, a cold, ruthless smile touching his lips. The First Obsidian Legion was complete, and its supreme champion stood ready. All that remained was for the King of Solaria to step into the trap.
