CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows

CHAPTER 157: THE SPAR OF SHADOWS

  • Next Chapter

The obsidian floor of the Mind Sea Temple reverberated as three distinct, formidable forces stepped into the courtyard ring.

The Black Flame Demon flexed its massive, magma-veined claws, dark fire swirling hungrily from its curved horns. Beside it, the Black Sabre-Lightning Tiger prowled in a low arc, kinetic sparks crackling along its violet fur as its four-foot ivory tusks gleamed under the ethereal sky. On the far side, the Arachne Princess unclasped her dual obsidian blades, her four chitinous spider-arms flexing behind her back with terrifying, rhythmic fluidity.

Before them stood the faceless Shadow Knight.

Towering at nine feet, clad in seamless black obsidian plate, it held its massive war mace rested casually across its right shoulder while its heavy tower shield locked into position on its left arm. Beneath its spired helm lay only cold, absolute void.

Caius leaned back against the central Stone Table, his arms crossed and his violet eyes gleaming with quiet expectation.

"Do not hold back," Caius commanded softly through his mental link. "Test the limits of my fourth court node."

ROAR!

The Black Sabre-Lightning Tiger struck first. It blurred into a streak of violet plasma, executing a blinding flank attack aimed directly at the knight's exposed waist. Simultaneously, the Black Flame Demon lunged forward, raising a clawed fist wrapped in a roaring sphere of dark fire to crush the knight’s helm from above.

The Shadow Knight did not retreat.

With impossible speed for its massive frame, it pivoted on its heel, bringing its obsidian tower shield across its torso.

BANG!

The Sabre Tiger slammed into the shield face at full kinetic momentum. Violet electricity exploded outward in violent arcs, but the knight’s shield did not yield an inch. Using the redirecting force built into its construct design, the Shadow Knight pivoted the shield outward, shoving the massive beast backward into the courtyard stone.

Before the tiger could recover, the knight pivoted smoothly toward the descending Demon. It raised its left arm, catching the Demon’s flaming fist directly on the shield’s hardened rim while swinging its colossal war mace in a brutal, sweeping counter-arc with its right.

The mace connected squarely with the Demon’s chest. The impact sounded like two mountains colliding. The shockwave blew back the surrounding dark mist, hurtling the towering fire-entity twenty yards across the basalt courtyard.

Suddenly, a shadow fell from above. The Arachne Princess descended, her dual swords dripping with corrosive shadow-venom, aiming for the narrow joints between the knight's neck and pauldrons.

Without looking up, the Shadow Knight triggered an internal pulsing array. A dense wave of kinetic force erupted outward from its armor, a localized shockwave that disrupted the Princess’s descent. As her blades glanced harmlessly off its shoulder plate, the knight reached out with an iron grip, grabbing two of her chitinous spider-arms mid-air and slamming her onto the stone floor with crushing, unyielding strength.

The three court entities scrambled back into position, panting, their eyes wide as they reassessed the monstrous construct standing before them. The Shadow Knight stood immobile at the center of the ring, its war mace returned to its shoulder, awaiting its master's next word.

Caius slowly straightened up from the Stone Table, a cold, triumphant smile spreading across his face.

The construct possessed the relentless, raw physical power of the Black Flame Demon, the spatial reflexes of the Arachne Princess, and the kinetic absorption of his own defensive arrays, all bound to an unshakeable, faceless entity that knew neither fear nor pain.

"Enough," Caius spoke, his voice cutting through the heavy silence.

The three court entities lowered their weapons and bowed their heads. The Shadow Knight turned toward Caius, lowering its massive nine-foot frame onto one knee and pressing the pommel of its mace against the basalt floor in total, unquestioning submission.

"You have earned your place at the table," Caius murmured, looking up at the glowing fourth spiral slot on the Stone Table. "When the Solarian Empire marches to answer my challenge, you will be the nightmare at the gates."
