CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows

CHAPTER 160: THE BAIT AND THE LEASH

High within the central tower of the Black Granite Citadel, Caius stood before the floating obsidian mirror. His violet eyes burned with a pale, ethereal light as he channeled mana into the Eye of the Loom.

Through Far Sight, his consciousness expanded across hundreds of leagues, skimming over the jagged crags of the central steppes and piercing deep into the Solarian royal capital.

There, surrounded by a blinding aura of pristine solar mana, stood High Lord Lorien and fifty Sun-Gilded Sentinels.

Caius watched in cold silence as the High Elf spoke down to King Alden with absolute, aristocratic disgust. He saw the shimmering mithril plate, the golden-etched runic greatswords, and the ancient, highly disciplined solar arrays flowing through the elven cohort's formation.

A faint, sharp smirk touched Caius’s lips.

The sight brought back memories of the Underdark caverns beneath the continent, the lands of the dark elf clans and the territory of the Queen Mothers.

His time in the subterranean realm had taught him that the dark elves were governed by ruthless pragmatism and ancient house politics. Great House Clans constantly fought blood feuds for leverage, and mercenary Shadowblades, veteran warriors, and exiled assassins were always hungry for resources to advance their standing.

Caius reached into his dark mantle and produced a smooth, pitch-black sphere no larger than a plum.

It was an Obsidian Crystal Bead, a far more powerful variant of the mysterious black bead he had harvested from the head of the Princess Arachne years ago in the borderlands. Through years of refining his Black Core and his Crown Core, Caius could now forge these beads himself, condensing ultra-pure dark energy into physical form.

To human mages, it was a terrifying dark core. To a dark elf warrior or Shadowblade seeking to break through their mana bottlenecks or forge deadly umbral weaponry, it was worth more than a mountain of gold.

"Old Bones," Caius spoke smoothly, tossing the pulsing bead into the air and catching it effortlessly.

From the darkest corner of the chamber stepped his protector and master spy, the grizzled, retired assassin who kept the old tavern in the borderlands. Scars crossed his aged face, and his gray hair was tied back, but he still carried the long saber and dagger at his waist with the same calm precision he had shown when cutting through the arachne swarm alongside Sereth.

Bound by the sacred oath he had sworn in that cavern when Caius was just a young boy, to protect him as his ward until his sixteenth year, Old Bones had remained at Caius's side long after the oath had fulfilled its formal term. His ties to House Vel'drin and his covert informant networks across the clan territories remained unmatched.

"My Lord," Old Bones bowed, his eyes gleaming beneath his dark hood.

"The dark elf clans will not send an official army to fight surface wars, but their rogue Shadowblades and hungry Clan mercenaries will kill for the right price," Caius said, his violet eyes gleaming with calculation. "Reach back to your contacts within House Vel'drin and send shadow-crows into the deep subterranean fissures. Spread word through the Underdark markets: the Lord of the Obsidian Citadel is hiring elite dark elf mercenaries."

He held up the Obsidian Crystal Bead, its dark aura casting long, jagged shadows across the stone floor.

"We offer two things," Caius continued, a dark, wicked glint entering his eyes. "First, these Obsidian Crystal Beads. Second, a new cultivation method, a simplified, diluted technique I'll call the Moon Flame Art."

Old Bones raised a gray eyebrow. "The Moon Flame Art?"

Caius chuckled, a low, cold sound. It was nothing more than a tailored, heavily diluted derivative of his own Calamity Forge, the method he used to absorb foreign beast cores by burning away impurities, wild instincts, and residual will using his Black Core's black flame.

"A fittingly poetic name to entice dark elves," Caius said smoothly. "Here is the brilliance of it: the Moon Flame Art and the Obsidian Beads are useless on their own. If a warrior attempts the Moon Flame Art without my bead, the black flames generated within their body will instantly burn through their mana pathways and destabilize their core. But if they consume the bead without practicing the method, the pure dark energy will simply sit stagnant in their body, unabsorbable."

Old Bones's eyes widened slightly as the trap snapped into focus.

"They need both," Old Bones rasped, a grin spreading across his scarred face. "The bead acts as the fuel and catalyst, while the technique directs the flame to refine it without killing the host."

"Precisely," Caius smirked. "It gives them explosive growth, purifies their dark mana, and helps them break through lifelong bottlenecks, but only as long as I keep feeding them beads. The Moon Flame Art will be our tool of enticement for the other clans. They will think they have stumbled upon a sacred, lost technique of the deep dark, when in reality, they are tying an inescapable leash around their own necks. Every breakthrough they achieve will only deepen their dependency on me."

Caius paused, his expression turning sharp and serious as he looked directly at Old Bones.

"However... I will not give this diluted version to House Vel'drin."

Old Bones tilted his head. "My Lord?"

"House Vel'drin took me in and bound you to me," Caius said calmly. "To Sereth and the Patriarch, we offer the genuine, fully functioning version, the very same method I refined specifically for you. The real Calamity Forge adaptation that safely rebuilds mana channels and permanently purifies dark core foundations without needing continuous beads to stay stable."

Caius stepped closer, his voice dropping to a cold, unyielding whisper.

"But there is a condition. Before a single rune of the true method is handed over, the Patriarch and core elders of House Vel'drin must swear a binding blood oath. It will remain their house's deepest, most guarded secret. They cannot teach it outside their direct lineage, nor can they reveal its true origin to the other clans. House Vel'drin gains ultimate power to dominate the Underdark from within, while the outer clans march on the surface under the leash of the Moon Flame Art."

Old Bones stared at Caius, a deep, raspy laugh bubbling up from his chest until he was practically cackling in the shadows.

He still remembered the moment Sereth of House Vel'drin had forced him into taking the boy as a ward right after they had harvested the Princess Arachne's core. Now, years later, the boy who had stood holding a black bead in a blood-soaked cavern had grown into a true sovereign, a master strategist who didn't just fight his enemies, but engineered entire civilizations into his debt.

"House Vel'drin will jump at the chance, My Lord," Old Bones grinned, his saber shifting slightly at his side. "The Patriarch will gladly swear any oath to secure the true method for our lineage, while the outer clan hunters will happily swallow the Moon Flame Art and march into hell itself for your beads."

Caius turned back to the Eye of the Loom, observing Lorien’s radiant cohort once more.

High Lord Lorien believed he was marching into a simple purge against a human warlord. He had no idea that Caius was preparing a bloodbath woven from the shadow techniques, diluted secrets, and hungry mercenaries of the Underdark.
