CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows

CHAPTER 161: THE LEDGER OF BLOOD

  • Next Chapter

The subterranean stronghold of House Vel'drin, carved deep into the abyssal bedrock of the Underdark, remained cold and silent as a tomb. In the high sanctuary, illuminated only by the faint, eerie pulse of raw mana crystals, the Patriarch of House Vel'drin sat upon his obsidian throne.

Before him stood Old Bones, his dark mantle drawn back to reveal his scarred, gray face. Floating between them was a silver scroll etched with intricate umbral runes, its surface vibrating with a refined, terrifying power.

"The true adaptation of the Calamity Forge," Old Bones said softly, his dry voice cutting through the stillness. "Caius engineered it specifically to rebuild broken pathways and permanently purify dark cores without destabilizing the host. It is the key to absolute dominance over the other Great Houses."

The Patriarch’s eyes narrowed, his gaze locking onto the silver scroll. "And the price?"

"An absolute Blood Oath," Old Bones replied, stepping forward. "Sworn by you and your core elders upon the shadow of House Vel'drin. This technique remains your house's deepest, most guarded secret. You cannot teach it outside your direct bloodline, nor reveal its origin to the other clans. House Vel'drin gains the power to rule the deep, while Caius retains the ledger."

The Patriarch remained silent for a long moment before letting out a cold, amused hum. He raised his hand, slicing his palm with a curved ceremonial dagger. Dark, mana-rich blood dripped onto the stone floor, rising into a shimmering violet mist.

"By the shadow and the blood of Vel'drin," the Patriarch intoned, his voice echoing through the chamber as the elders behind him bowed, sealing the oath into their very souls. "The secret is bound."

Old Bones released the scroll, allowing it to float into the Patriarch's hand. "Use it well. As for the rest of the Underdark..."

A wicked smirk crossed the old assassin's face.

Deep within the subterranean Black Market of the outer territories, the air was thick with the scent of roasted cave-beast, burning pitch, and raw mana dust. Beneath the towering ribs of ancient leviathan fossils, dark elf hunters, exiled Shadowblades, and mercenary captains gathered around a dimly lit trading alcove.

A veteran clan warrior slammed a pouch of gold onto a slate counter, staring intently at Old Bones's merchant operative.

"I keep my own clan's cultivation technique," the warrior growled, his hand resting on his curved saber. "I've refined my core for sixty years. Why should I care about some surface warlord's scroll?"

"Because your clan's method took you sixty years just to reach a bottleneck you'll die trying to break," the operative sneered, tossing a single Obsidian Crystal Bead and a thin leather slip onto the counter. "Keep your cultivation. No one is asking you to discard it. The Moon Flame Art works alongside whatever method you already practice. It simply acts as a catalyst."

This story has been taken without authorization. Report any sightings.

The warrior sneered in disbelief, but he picked up the bead and channeled his dark mana into the leather slip. A sequence of simple, elegant martial routes flashed through his mind.

Following the slip's directions, he swallowed the bead and ran his own clan’s cultivation technique through the new Moon Flame channels.

Instantly, the dark elf's eyes snapped open, glowing with a fierce, unstable violet light. A suffocating pressure erupted from his body, cracking the stone beneath his boots. The stagnant, clogged dark mana that had trapped him at his current realm for decades was violently purified by a burst of internal black flame, absorbed straight into his core.

In a single breath, his cultivation level leaped an entire notch.

Gasps echoed through the crowded market. Shadowblades drew back in shock as the warrior stared at his hands, trembling with sheer, intoxicating power.

"By the Ancestors..." the warrior gasped, his voice shaking. "It’s... it’s completely seamless. It refined my clan's arts in seconds!"

"It is potent, isn't it?" the operative chuckled darkly, leaning forward.

What the operative did not say, and what the warrior had yet to realize, was the subtle trap Caius had engineered into the technique. The initial burst of power was massive, but once the Moon Flame Art took root, it subtly altered the flow of dark mana within the body. Without another Obsidian Bead to feed the flame, a practitioner's original cultivation method would not kill them, but it would drastically slow to a near-complete crawl. The contrast would be agonizing, featuring instantaneous and explosive growth with a bead versus sluggish, torturous progress without one.

Caius had designed the system with meticulous caution. He knew that if his mercenaries died on the surface battlefield, the Dual Sovereigns, known as the Absolute Sun and Absolute Moon, would inevitably inspect the bodies and examine the Obsidian Beads. If the beads contained malicious curses or volatile traps, the grand scholars of the Sovereigns would detect the trickery immediately and turn their wrath toward him.

Instead, any examination of an Obsidian Bead would reveal only ultra-pure, perfectly refined dark energy, presenting itself as a harmless, high-grade cultivation resource. The secret lay entirely in how the Moon Flame Art interacted with the body's channels, leaving no foreign signature or sabotage for the Sovereigns to find.

"That sudden leap in power?" the operative continued, nodding toward the stunned warrior. "That's just the start. You want to keep that momentum going instead of hitting a wall? You'll need more beads. And the only place to get them is at the Obsidian Citadel. The Lord of the Citadel is hiring."

Within hours, word spread through the Underdark like wildfire. The outer clan warriors did not care about surface politics, but the sheer, undeniable potency of the Moon Flame Art drove them into a frenzy.

They believed they were acquiring ultimate power. In truth, they were binding their own leashes.

By nightfall of the fifth day, a quiet wind blew across the central steppes outside the Citadel. Above the granite battlements, Caius stood watching the darkness.

Beside him, Old Bones bowed his head. "The Patriarch has sworn the Blood Oath, My Lord. House Vel'drin holds the true secret in absolute darkness, while two hundred elite mercenaries from the outer clans have taken the bait."

Right on cue, the shadows along the base of the fortress walls began to warp. Black mist coiled around the jagged crags, and from the deep fissures surrounding the Citadel, slinking, cloaked figures emerged like phantoms.

Scaled in dark leather and enchanted armor, two hundred dark elf warriors scaled the granite walls without making a single sound. They landed upon the parapets in flawless unison, dropping to one knee before Caius, their violet eyes burning with a desperate, hooked hunger for the power only he could grant them.

Caius looked down at his new legion, a cold, ruthless smile touching his lips as he tossed a heavy pouch of Obsidian Beads to the lead mercenary.

"Welcome to the surface," Caius spoke smoothly. "Let us show the High Elves how the dark hunts."
