Armed Train in the Apocalypse

Chapter 899 - 506: Embers of the Long Night (15) (Part 2)

The colonel listened to Su Huan without any reaction, not offering any opinion. After silently contemplating for a dozen seconds, he removed the communication device from his ear and handed it to Su Huan, "The commander wants to talk to you."

Su Huan quietly praised the military’s efficiency in his heart.

As soon as he put on the communication device, a dignified middle-aged voice came through, "I understand your situation, but we need to further verify your identity. As for the matters you mentioned, we also need to investigate. Without conclusive evidence, He Wei remains a general of Donghuang."

"There’s no time," Su Huan interrupted him calmly. "If you had the power to arbitrarily alter someone’s memory, where would you be right now?"

The commander on the other end was taken aback, not expecting the abrupt question.

But as a trained soldier, he reflexively began considering the question.

’If this ability truly exists, it would be quite suitable for espionage, most apt for infiltrating...’

The commander shivered suddenly.

"It’s exactly as you think. If He Wei knows your high command’s location, they’re already en route."

"He Wei doesn’t know, and even I don’t know the location of the United Command Center. They can’t possibly find it."

The commander steadfastly denied on the other end.

"I’m talking about the two pale demons, one of whom can erase memory, the other... roughly linked to destiny."

"Destiny?"

The commander’s voice had changed, clearly shaken, but he still questioned, "What exactly is the ability?"

Su Huan spoke calmly, "I’m not entirely sure, but you can understand them as intelligent, immensely powerful evil anomalies, and the entire Eternal Night Zone is the area where their rules are in effect."

The commander put down the communication device and looked at the two powerful figures sent by the United Command, asking gravely, "How much truth is there in what he says?"

Both hesitated and shook their heads; the question was a bit beyond the scope for the two Tier Two Evolvers.

Seeing the atmosphere turning stagnant, the chief of staff remarked, "If he’s lying, he’ll leverage our forces to locate the United Command, at most lose a command center, but there surely are backups. But if he’s telling the truth, all our deployments in the Eternal Night Zone are at risk."

Donghuang could accept some of the high command being wiped out, but certainly not being controlled.

Though harsh, from a strategic perspective, the negative impact of the latter is considerably greater than the former.

With He Wei as a division commander, two conflicting orders have already thrown the entire military into chaos. If the highest command center is disrupted, there’s no point in fighting the war.

The commander furrowed his brow, "So your suggestion is...?"

"Listen to him!"

The chief of staff replied decisively.

...

Having gained the commander’s trust, the remaining tasks were easier.

The remnants of the 712th Division were handed over to the military headquarters, then the two Tier Two Evolvers from the headquarters led the way, and the three headed to the United Command Center.

Although Su Huan wanted to reject the position of division commander, seeing the pitiful expressions of Qin Mian and the others, he told the military headquarters he’d reorganize the 712th Division after He Wei returned.

Though the 712th Division had been severely battered, when He Wei placed it in his hands, it was still a division-level combat unit. To dismantle their designation under his command would be unreasonable.

"Are we not driving?"

Two men in black combat uniforms approached.

Though they were Tier Two Evolvers, their demeanor was distinctly military; even their appearance was similar, with healthy tan skin, broad shoulders, and lean, sturdy frames like blades, exuding sharpness.

Compared to He Jie and the others, they seemed more regulated and less wild.

The high evolution rate of the Armed Corps makes them less like "soldiers," resembling more like predatory humanoid beasts.

The speaker, named Wang Hongsheng, is a Tier Two "Night Hunter," considered the main combat force among the duo, leaning towards an assassin, but more versatile than assassins, with the night as his battlefield.

The other, more reticent one, named Yan Han, has a two-character name, "Gatherer," responsible for perception.

Su Huan shook his head, looking into the darkness, "How far is your command center from here?"

Wang Hongsheng estimated, "About a thousand kilometers or so."

"On foot."

"On foot?"

Wang Hongsheng hadn’t reacted yet when Su Huan dashed out like an unbridled steed.

Though flying is prohibited in the Eternal Night Zone, as a Tier Three "Fighting Expert," he traversed the land unmatched in Eternal Night!

The two exchanged glances and quickly followed suit.

...

The United Command Center of the Eternal Night War Zone was deeply buried underground, prepared well in advance. Although the survival conditions were not ideal, they weren’t too harsh either.

The bright incandescent lights emitted a slight warmth, casting gentle luminescence to keep the interior bright without being overly stark.

An elderly man in civilian attire sat behind a mahogany desk, reviewing paper documents with the assistance of a secretary. The papers contained all information about Su Huan since entering the Eternal Night, even including battlefield photos, whose clarity rivaled close-range camera shots.

Looking over them, the elderly man suddenly asked, "How long has it been since the last outsider appeared?"

The secretary responded steadily, "It’s been eight months; someone is currently trying to break through to Tier Two Evolver."

"Looks like outside development is faster than we expected," the elderly man said leisurely.

Noticing the elderly man’s improved mood, the secretary appropriately inquired, "You’ve never met him. How can you know the situation outside?"

The elderly man pointed at the document, the image showed Su Huan with one finger wiping out hundreds of heavy cavalry, his expression indifferent, eyes still exuding an unrestrained aura of killing intent, enough to make one’s heart tremble even through the photograph.

"It’s been eight months without anyone coming in. People outside have mostly deduced that the Eternal Night Zone is a one-way entry, but then this person appeared, clearly thinking his strength is sufficient."

The secretary remarked joyfully, "If this person represents outside’s top prowess, even first-rate, we’ve achieved our objective."

The elderly man smiled equivocally, but his eyes still carried a hint of examination.

"Have him come over as soon as possible."

The smile faded from the secretary’s face as he discreetly retreated to organize the order.

No matter how trivial an elderly man’s words might seem, the secretary always treated them seriously, let alone such a straightforward command.

Just as the secretary exited, he saw an elderly man carrying the star of a general, striding quickly toward him. Without wasting words, as soon as he saw the secretary, he immediately stated, "Someone who shouldn’t be here has appeared outside the United Command Center."

The secretary paused slightly, "Someone who shouldn’t be here?"

"Southern Theater Command, 712th Division Commander, Major General He Wei!"

...

Outside the United Command, the Major General who had traveled over a thousand kilometers stood firm, only his steps seemed frail, looking exhausted.

Behind him, two tall, white figures followed him like phantoms.

Recill grumbled, "Why must I expend energy to carry him?"

Marcus replied calmly, "Because I need to deploy abilities to locate the other’s headquarters, otherwise could you find it?"

Recill was left speechless and held his tongue.

A moment later, he irritably asked, "Still not found?"

Marcus glanced at him, "Recill, you’re disregarding the power of destiny."

The latter retorted, "That’s enough to fool mortals. You, a high-level demon talking about destiny’s power? Even a small ripple from the river of fate could drown us both!"

After the mockery, Recill waited for Marcus’s rebuttal but noticed he remained silent, surprising him. If ever destiny was questioned before, Marcus would lecture him incessantly, yet today was different, what happened, a change of heart?

Turning to see Marcus staring fixedly at a stump ahead.

Such stumps are common in the Eternal Night Zone, having died without sunlight yet surviving due to cold, standing like spears.

Marcus spoke solemnly, "It seems destiny has permitted us to offer this world to our master."
