Armed Train in the Apocalypse

Chapter 898 - 506: Embers of the Long Night (15)

Commander Su abandoned all heavy equipment, leading more than five thousand newly integrated warriors of the 712th Division on a wild dash across the wasteland.

The car’s gas pedal was floored, revs pushed to the maximum, and the engine’s roar thundered through the wilderness. A ghostly blue river appeared on the ground, even reflecting in the sky, guiding the troops through the night.

On a troop carrier converted into a temporary command post, the regimental commander questioning Su Huan mumbled to himself, still frowning.

"An evil anomaly that can alter memories, how does this sound so unreliable?"

Shen Li shook his head, "Yet you still believed it?"

The regimental commander cursed, glaring with wide eyes, "That’s only because you vouched for it desperately, our brothers have placed their lives on you this time."

Shen Li said smugly, "You know, senior, I’ve always had good luck."

The regimental commander snorted coldly. When he was in his senior year, Shen Li had just entered the military academy. He had mentored Shen Li for a few months. After graduation, with family connections, he steadily rose to major, fought in the Eternal Night for two years, and was promoted to colonel, leading his regiment independently.

This kid’s synthetic brigade had always been a reserve unit and hadn’t fought a single battle, yet became a full battalion-level major.

Although the two were quite a few ranks apart, it was wartime. If Shen Li had bet on the right person this time, a double promotion wasn’t out of the question. Those rules and seniority only mattered in peacetime; in this chaotic world, surviving was enough for promotion.

Su Huan had no interest in what those forcefully integrated thought. If He Wei hadn’t shoved this mess on him, he would have charged ahead alone long ago.

The Eternal Night Battlefield was chaotic enough, and now two more meddling pale demons were added. Who knows what changes might occur?

The sudden gunfire interrupted Su Huan’s contemplation.

Looking up towards the distance, crisscrossing trenches appeared on the wasteland, soldiers guardedly gazing at them.

From the distance, it was obvious this batch of troops meant business.

Hearing the warning shots, the convoy slowed down. Su Huan tapped on the canopy of the jeep below, signaling Qin Mian to drive forward.

The engine let out a few muffled growls and wobbled as it charged out of the convoy. The other side sent out a jeep as well.

A soldier stood on it, shouting, "Our force is ordered to block the 712th Division’s defense zone, stop immediately! Stop immediately! Or we will proceed with indiscriminate attack!"

The shout reverberated through multiple loudspeakers three times, heard by most of the warriors at the front of the convoy.

In the midst of bewilderment, Su Huan’s jeep emerged from the crowd.

As the two sides converged, Su Huan saw that besides soldiers, there was a colonel seated in the passenger seat, scrutinizing him with a cold gaze.

Su Huan casually sat on the rooftop, one hand resting on his knee to support his chin, one leg naturally dangling on the windshield below. But his gaze wasn’t fixed on the colonel; he was looking beyond the front line.

There was an energy reaction from a Tier Two Evolver there, quite rare.

He had been in the Eternal Night for so long, yet had rarely seen any Evolvers. Most were like Qin Mian, just awakened, not equipped to ascend, the few Tier Ones in the division had all died in battle, Su Huan hadn’t even met them.

Unlike outside, where Tier Two Evolvers were like wholesale commodities among various forces.

"I am Su Huan, currently acting as commander of the 712th Division. Who is your highest commander, can we talk to them?"

Su Huan said straightforwardly.

In the rear temporary command post, the general snorted coldly, "Since when did I have a new commander under my command that I didn’t know about!"

A man in black tactical military attire stood beside the general, watching Su Huan on the monitor.

Suddenly, he spoke, "Previously, General He Wei reported on an outsider’s situation. With the battle situation urgent at the time, he planned to have the headquarters verify after the catastrophe. Unexpectedly, things took an inconceivable turn and gradually promoted the outsider to commander."

"That damned He Wei causing trouble for me again!"

Seeing the general about to curse again, the chief of staff quickly steered the topic on track, "Can we confirm his identity? Is he truly an evil anomaly or a high-ranking evolver? Do we have a chance to defeat him?

The man gazed at the Thunder Pool covering the entire battlefield ahead, inside which black and white arcs occasionally flickered beyond ordinary people’s perception, clearly intensely compressed lightning!

Every inch of ghostly blue harbored terrifying energy equivalent to explosives of the same volume, and yet the soldiers boldly used it as a street lamp, unaware that if this blue light exploded, it could send everyone present away. Some even reached out to touch it for warmth, making his eyelids twitch.

Nodding heavily, he said, "Evil anomalies wouldn’t have such patience, certainly a high-ranking evolver."

With his judgment, everyone in the command post sighed in relief.

This was an expert sent by the joint command center, specially dispatched to deal with evolvers.

The chief of staff then curiously asked, "How strong is he? Is he stronger than you guys?"

The man scratched his head awkwardly, smiling bitterly, "I have no idea how strong he is."

"That doesn’t matter, as long as he’s human, it’s manageable."

Watching the figure on the screen, the general’s eyes sparkled.

...

Elsewhere, the colonel got out of the car, his gaze calm, "He can hear what we are saying now."

"That’s good."

Su Huan briefly recounted his background and the incident regarding the pale demons.

Their first reaction was similar to Shen Li’s team, "Emotionally difficult to accept, but rationally immediately accepted," the concept of demons altering memories.

In two years, they had encountered far too many bizarre events.
