Apocalypse: My SSS Ability Changes Every Few Days
Chapter 74: In the Danger Zone
They got through the streets relatively smoothly.
Along the way, there weren’t any more of those thugs around.
The place was empty and void of people.
Inhabitants in these buildings must have gotten to the quarantine area due to the close proximity.
When they got to the grass field, Alex raised his right hand, gesturing to Riley, Terry and Brian to stay put while he checked on the grass field.
They nodded their heads and stayed on alert.
Alex turned into shadow form and he went towards the grass field.
Riley, Terry and Brian could only see a small dark spot of shadow moving on the ground and they frowned.
They weren’t used to it yet but they couldn’t complain much.
It was such a useful ability to have on their side.
When Alex got to the edge of the grass field, he slowed down a little.
The long grass, which was as tall as a meter, swayed in the night when the breeze blew by it.
He could sense that there were many mutated beasts hiding within the grass field but they weren’t actively moving around.
Moving in cautiously, Alex could see that there were many mutated rats, cats and dogs that were still in Stage I, resting inside the grass field.
Alex didn’t alarm them and he moved back out of the grass field.
He pondered for a moment on it and he got an idea on how to make use of them.
"So? What’s inside the grass field?" Riley asked when Alex appeared in front of him, turning back to his normal form.
Terry and Brian also came over, all ready for a battle.
Alex, however, shook his head at them and said, "There are mutated rats, cats and dogs hiding within the grass field, but I don’t need you to kill them off.
"Wake them up and drive them towards the quarantine area if I don’t make it back an hour later at 21:00 HRS."
"Are you sure about this?" Riley asked with a frown.
"Yes, I’m sure." Alex replied while he glanced in the distance where the southern piers and quarantine area were.
"Fine, then..."
Even though they were worried for him, they knew that it was hard to persuade him when he decided on something.
And thankfully for them, Alex had been right with his decisions so far.
They could only make sure that they executed what Alex had instructed when it was time.
Alex turned back into shadow form and he went towards the grass field again.
He went deep into the grass field and cut across it to reach the other end of the grass field.
It was a totally different sight over at the southern piers.
There were concertina wires and armed guards deployed around the warehouses by the piers.
Vehicles were moving in and out constantly.
And there were tents that had been set up to hold the people who had come to the quarantine area.
Drones buzzed in the sky above, with their thermal sights unable to see the presence of Alex, who was in the form of a shadow.
There weren’t much lighting except for spotlights shining bright in strategic areas and it was an advantage to him.
Alex got into one of the warehouses and it was modified with rows of rooms, like the one that the nurse he had met earlier was in.
He got into one of the rooms and there was a skinny man waiting anxiously, with his eyes shifting from left to right constantly.
A woman in a white coat was seated in front of the skinny man with a few armed men in army uniforms standing behind her.
They were quiet and were waiting for something.
Knock.
After a few moments, the door was knocked and another woman in a white coat came into the room.
She nodded her head at the other white coat and armed man.
Without any warning, the armed soldiers raised their hands and aimed their rifles at the skinny man.
"What’s happening?" The skinny man glanced at the armed soldiers and asked frantically.
"Your test results came back positive so we have to make sure that you are under our control and surveillance at all times." The white coat seated opposite the skinny man said.
"No... What do you mean by positive? I was promised safety, food and water!" He panicked and shouted.
The armed soldiers also shouted at him and they got ready to pull their triggers.
"Stop! I shouldn’t have trusted you!" The skinny man raised his hands and fireballs appeared in front of him.
But before he could unleash his fireballs at the soldiers, the white coat narrowed her eyes.
In an instant, glowing chains rose from the ground and they latched onto the body of the skinny man and wrapped around his hands.
"Argh!" The skinny man gave out a groan and the fireballs dissipated.
His eyes turned heavy and he dropped to the ground in the next moment.
The white coat stood up from her seat and turned around.
"Bring him to the testing subject holding area." She said and left the room without looking back.
The armed soldiers proceeded to carry the skinny man by his arms and they dragged him out of the room.
Alex knew that he was on to something and he followed closely behind.
They dragged the skinny man across to another warehouse and brought him inside.
It was very much different within the warehouse.
Men with special armored uniforms stood outside many confinement cells with many others who were like the skinny man inside them.
Alex figured that those who were wearing those special armored uniforms were most likely also Awakened or they had other ways that could subdue the captives.
There were also men and women who looked like researchers in their white coats looking at monitors with machines whirling by the side.
He frowned when he saw them injecting something into the skinny man and putting him onto a platform.
A man with gloves came over to the skinny man and he placed an electronic device over the skinny man’s head.
"Argh!" The skinny man shouted in pain, as if he had been electrocuted, and thrashed around before he became unconscious again.
