The Tower of Breath rose from the pale grass in deep crimson stone that seemed to breathe with a slow, independent rhythm.

Orin stood at the base and spoke the first law clearly enough for every member of the core to hear.

"The air inside grows denser with every chamber. You cannot climb on individual strength. Each level demands a different combination of the physiques present. Fail to combine correctly and the chamber will not open upward. Fail too many times and the tower will expel the entire group or worse. There is no time limit except the one your lungs impose."

She looked at me once, silver eyes calm, then stepped aside so the carrier of the advanced Cursed Nebula Physique entered first.

The doorway accepted us without resistance. Inside, the first chamber was a wide circular room of the same crimson stone, empty of furniture or decoration. The air was already heavier than the plain outside. Breathing required deliberate effort. A single archway on the far side remained sealed by a smooth surface of the same material as the walls.

Elizabeth moved to my right. Vale took the left. The rest of the core spread into the formation we had used for every threshold that required all of us. Orin remained slightly behind my shoulder, reading the chamber the way Thalia read vibration.

I opened the Cursed Nebula Physique to a controlled fraction of its new depth. The denser air answered at once, pressing back against the release. Elizabeth layered her own advanced power into the same space, stabilising the pressure. Vale added raw physical reinforcement. The sealed archway did not move.

Seraphina stepped forward and introduced a precise temporal thinning that made the heavy air easier to process for short intervals. Feng Lan followed with a circulating pattern that distributed the effort across the group rather than leaving it on the strongest. The archway shimmered but stayed closed.

Isolde and Thalia joined next, one feeding the living-current sensitivity of the outer sea into the circuit, the other refining the fine vibrations of the chamber itself so the combination became smoother. The air lightened by a fraction. The archway still held.

Sael, the twins, Lian, Mei, Rhea, Kora, Sylis, Veyra, and Lydia added their individual strengths in sequence, each one adjusting to the growing network of power rather than trying to dominate it. Only when the full core had locked into a single cooperative field did the sealed surface dissolve. The second chamber opened.

We climbed.

Each level demanded a different arrangement. Some chambers required the dual physique of Lian and Mei at the centre with the rest of us feeding them. Others needed Vale and Rhea’s direct force as the primary engines while the more refined physiques kept the denser air from crushing the circuit. One chamber would accept progress only when Thalia and Orin guided the fine structure and the rest of us simply maintained the outer pressure. Another opened solely because Kora folded a narrow path of thinner air through the worst of the density and the twins amplified it long enough for everyone to pass.

The forced cooperation stripped away any remaining distance between the older members of the circle and the newer ones. Bodies pressed close in the heavier chambers simply to keep the shared field stable. Breath was shared in the most literal sense when the air became too dense for individual lungs. Hands steadied shoulders. Power flowed across skin without the usual boundaries of privacy or rank. By the time we cleared the twelfth chamber the core moved as a single organism that happened to occupy thirteen separate bodies.

The final chamber was smaller and emptier than the rest. At its centre floated a single seed of pure white energy the size of a closed fist. It pulsed in slow time with the Cursed Nebula Physique and with the deeper rhythm of the Origin Wound itself. Orin’s voice was quiet.

"The seed of Breath. It permanently expands the lungs and meridians of the carrier who absorbs it. The rest of the group receives a lesser, temporary resonance that will fade after the next tower. Only the selected physique can take the seed fully."

I stepped forward and closed my hand around the white seed. It dissolved into the palm on contact and spread through the chest and the main channels in a single clean wave of expansion. Breathing suddenly required less effort even inside the still-dense air of the summit chamber. The meridians widened and stabilised around the new capacity. The advanced stage of the Cursed Nebula Physique settled deeper into the new foundation without resistance.

The descent was easier than the climb. The chambers that had demanded perfect cooperation on the way up recognised the completed seed and opened downward without further trial. We stepped back onto the pale grass at the base of the crimson tower with the full core intact and the first of the seven required advancements secured.

The second tower, the Tower of Bone, stood in soft gold a short march across the plain. We made camp in the open grass between them rather than returning to the city of the Descendants. Thin barriers of the same practical design the alliance used on the surface gave us windbreak and privacy. Food was simple. The ribbon of white light in the sky began its slow dimming.

There was no formal discussion of the climb. The forced cooperation inside the Tower of Breath had already said everything that needed saying about how the circle would have to function for the remaining six. When the dimming deepened into the Wound’s equivalent of night, the core simply came together in the open space at the centre of the camp.

The contact that followed was longer, more joyful, and more exhausting than the quieter first night inside the Wound. Success had loosened something. Bodies moved with open hunger and open relief. I took Elizabeth first while the others pressed close, the new capacity in the lungs and meridians making every breath shared between us feel larger. Vale claimed the next stretch with her usual direct strength, now amplified by the residual resonance of the seed. Isolde and Thalia followed, steady calm and refined sensitivity weaving through the denser power. Sael’s practical intensity cut clean lines through the softer moments. Orin’s measured precision found its place inside the larger current without needing to direct it.

The twins, Lian, Mei, Rhea, Kora, Sylis, Veyra, Seraphina, Lydia, and Feng Lan moved in and out of the central field as the hours continued, sometimes alone with me, more often in shifting groups that left no one outside the heat for long. The expanded breath capacity turned every climax into something that lasted longer and recovered faster. The forced unity of the climb carried over into the night as a deliberate choice rather than a requirement. Laughter rose between longer stretches of wordless contact. Exhaustion was answered with short sleep that ended as soon as someone reached for someone else again.

By the time the ribbon of white light began its next brightening, most of the core lay asleep in a single tangled pile across the mats and grass at the centre of the camp. Skin against skin, limbs overlapping, breath rising and falling in loose unison. The Tower of Breath stood crimson and completed behind us. The Tower of Bone waited in soft gold ahead. The Cursed Nebula Physique carried a permanent expansion that would feed every remaining climb.

Elizabeth’s head rested against my shoulder. Orin’s silver hair spilled across Vale’s arm. Isolde’s steady breathing matched Thalia’s quieter rhythm. The newer and older members of the circle were no longer distinguishable by anything except the individual textures of their power and their hunger.

The first tower had been climbed.

The circle that would attempt the second already slept as one body, joyful, exhausted, and tighter than it had been before the dense air of the Tower of Breath forced it to become so.
